Sub Rosa was terrible, but at least it was an entire episode. Shades of Grey was a clip show. I think some of Riker's 'memories' were even of scenes he wasn't even in.

TNG had some terrible episodes (Space Africans, Space Irish, and Space Scottish Ghost), but at least those episodes attempted an original story.

The strike led to the Phase II scripts getting used. Most of the behind the scenes discussions point to the suits trying to cut costs as the cause for Shades of Grey. It was probably a combination of both, though.

Patrick Stewart is a hilariously absurd human being, all sources that I've ever seen seem to say. It only makes it funnier when you've only seen him be regale and Shakespeareian as in TNG or in all the, y'know, Shakespeare he seems to do. He's done some comical work too, and he's damn good at it.

A couple interviews I've seen with Stewart have him talking about how he was a bit of a stiff when he started on TNG. He mostly just frowned on shenanigans on set. He quickly learned to lighten up and have some fun while working.

I possess no personal knowledge about acting, but I should think performing near-camp drama for just cameras and a crew would be rather draining, compared to performing before a live audience. At least with the latter, you're emotionally sustained by immediate response.

OK, this was a revelation for me. I alway's thought that TNG was incredibly stiff and stilted compared to the originals series - even though I didn't miss a single episode.

It's kind of freaky to see these people who had always seemed as dull and boring as possible cracking up and being silly years later. I wish they had allowed more of the actors' personalities to shape their characters on this show.

Especially Worf. He borded me to tears when I watched the series. The actor looks like hella fun in this clip.

Really? I'm rewatching the whole show on Netflix and Worf has had some of the most laugh-out-loud funny lines in the series. He and Data are probably my favorite characters.

I can think of 3 off the top of my head:
1) The episode where they are on the planet which has an old casino, the away team asks the concierge what the name of the planet is, he looks at them funny and says "Earth? Whaddayou call it?" and Worf busts in and says something along the lines of "We call it Beta Epsilon Seven!"
2) The episode in which Q is trying to convince them he is mortal, and asks what he has to do to prove it, Worf says simply "Die!" -- something about the way he delivered the line had me laughing hysterically.
3) There's an episode where Geordi (I think) is trying to get a girl and they come into Ten Forward and leave with a girl right away, Worf turns to whoever he is having a drink with and says "I've been tutoring him. He is a fast learner"

Anyhow, not trying to discount your opinion or anything as obviously you are entitled to it, but hearing you say he was unfunny and boring moved me to recount some of my fond memories.

Yeah, Worf was written as the straight man in a lot of the bits of humor TNG had. The problem was that nearly EVERYONE was a bit of a straight man, but Worf was the most tight-laced of them all. Even less overtly humorous than Data.

Basically, Worf was maximum deadpan, so every funny line he had was dependent on immediate context. To recount something funny Worf said you'd need to include what everyone else said leading up to it, whereas every other character had several lines that were out-and-out funny, no setup needed. That doesn't mean Worf was less funny, it just means that as the details start to fade it gets harder and harder to remember why he was funny... and subsequently, that he was at all.

4) I am not a merry man.

It's DS9 and not TNG, but one of the best is a callback to TNG:

Quark: "Did you hear? Keiko's gonna have another baby."
Worf: "Now?!"
[Later]
Bashir: "Well, I'll be sure and call you when she's ready to deliver; you can lend a hand."
Worf: "Seven months? Unfortunately, I will be away from the station at that time. Far away. Visiting my parents. On Earth. Excuse me."

Really? I'm rewatching the whole show on Netflix and Worf has had some of the most laugh-out-loud funny lines in the series. He and Data are probably my favorite characters.

GypsyJoker: MadSkillz: Gergesa: NeoCortex42: Which is why we ended up with Shades of Grey to save money. Worst Trek 'episode' by far.

Man alive everyone knows that Sub Rosa was the worst episode of star trek tng.

I don't know, but Gates McFadden having a simulated orgasm somehow rescues that one.

Aside from how astoundingly hot that sounds, did you know that Gates McFadden was the choreographer for the movie Labyrinth?

Mind. Blown. I love that movie. :)

You get a sense of how far the goofy man is is from the stern, Shakesperean, actorly persona.

Sadly, the video cuts off before the real punchline:

Wesley: Worf, it sounds like it works great for the Klingons but I think I need to try something a little less... dangerous.
Worf: Go to her door. Beg like a human.

Star Trek TNG would have definitely benefited from a few more Animal House jokes.

Geordi: Captain, we should be able to reverse the polarity of the spacial anomaly using an inverse tachyon beam projected from the main deflector.
Picard: What the hell is an "inverse tachyon"?
Riker: Forget it, he's rolling.
