Maybe they should have been better at selling things.

/Thought I'd get the thread off to a good start.

Sometimes, not often; but sometimes I wonder if we would be better off burning it all to the ground, collecting the insurance money and start completely over.

/ I'm gonna need a mulligan on this one

No matter how good Christmas sales are, January and February are always really slow.

But hey, Mitt Romney's entire campaign revolved around the nation's economy NOT picking up a few months before Christmas.

I've been hired on as seasonal and kept quite a few times. Hell last time they kept me, and when the garden center had to close most of the week they transferred me over to the design/install side to keep me on.

I get lucky with bosses that reward good workers.

whatshisname: No matter how good Christmas sales are, January and February are always really slow.

Exactly.  I worked retail for 22 years, and everyone knows inventory is light for January, run you big sales, and slowly start bringing in the new inventory mid Feb/March for Valentines and Spring Break.  Easter kicks off "normal shopping" and so on.

2012-12-30 03:43:38 PM
Then again, if you hope your retail gig is going to turn either permanent or financially successful, maybe a wakeup call is in fact needed.

2012-12-30 03:43:41 PM
Just wait until the Obama Limit kicks in and these workers get no more than 29 hours a week *ever*. More liberal stupidity, more pain for the working people.

Some businesses cut hours in the winter because business slows down. Except they still need the staff. And the managers end up working 16 hour days and eventually get burned out and quit. And the weird thing is they pay managers more than the minimum wage slaves.

I hate Christmas so much.

hell, i'll admit that i want a duster. but...a white duster? seems like it would look like crap pretty quickly. because i'd be using my duster for adventures and shiat. like drinking coffee while driving and smoking a tobacco pipe...while driving. stains aplenty. yep, i think a black duster is right for an adventurer like me.

Lush is also a word for a person who drinks a lot. That might not help sales.

2012-12-30 04:41:24 PM
Maybe sales wouldn't be so slow if everything wasn't so disgustingly overpriced. $27 for a hardcover? $65 for a video game? Up yours, assholes. You wanted higher prices, well you got 'em. Now don't be disappointed when gift lists shrink and everyone left on them only gets one item instead of multiple. The amount of money to be spent hasn't changed, so why should your sales at the new, higher prices go up? I guess you and your shareholders will just have to rent out your beach house this year instead of letting the kids use it. Awwww.

Guessing the white duster is not an every-day-duster. More of a special occasions duster, like for an Equinox.

Exactly, you may look down on people in service jobs but those jobs are necessary for society as we know it to function. Not to mention they are important to the economy as we know it since we are mostly a consumer economy. Low paid jobs are here to stay, and they're growing.

2012-12-30 04:53:01 PM
One of the more obnoxious things about retail now is the introduction of the on-call shift. I know some temporary workers this season who have to call in an hour before their shift starts to see if they even have a shift that day. It really sucks if that person has arranged babysitting etc. only to find out the shift has been canceled. This affects a whole lot more people than just the worker who is getting screwed out of shifts.

No degree or little skills?

Onieka O'Kieffe, 23, was hired by Lush Cosmetics in midtown Manhattan for the holiday season. Lush told her she'd be working 20 to 30 hours per week, she says, but instead, she's getting only 10 hours a week at most. That's bad news for someone who has a few thousand dollars of credit card debt.

They were doing that ten years ago at Waldenbooks/Borders. It was horseshiat; it's retail not open heart surgery.
