Even though Thorin finally accepts Bilbo into the company by the end of the movie. Bilbo will betray him by the time the third movie ends and Thorin will end up dead.

When Django kills the sister from upstairs and she goes flying into the next room. I kept trying to figure out how that was possible.


It's pretty simple. They tie a rope or a cable to the actress, then when the gunshot goes off, someone off screen jerks and pulls her into the other room. Then, you just digitally remove the cable and you're done.

All in all, I liked Django a lot, even though it could have been trimmed by about 20 minutes.

Django Unchained was my Christmas day escape from family for a couple hours. Awesome movie though I agree it could have lost a half hour, in the middle act. I'm planning on seeing the Hobbit and Les Mis before returning to work after New Year's. Finally, there are some movies I actually want to see in the theater!

I thought the Hobbit great. Much better than ROTK.

Also, the actor who played Bilbo was so much better than Frodo.

Good fun and not boring at all. It could have used a ten minute intermission though.

Marisyana: I just went and saw Lincoln again.  It remained awesome.

I don't go to the movies (not a snobby thing, there are plenty of movies I want to see I just can't get around to seeing them), but I made an effort to see both Lincoln and Argo and both movies make you feel proud to be an American.

I saw Lincoln with my dad and when it finished he started to clap and everybody else joined in.

Django could have trimmed the winter bounty hunting scenes and Les Mis... could've just ended the damn movie like almost an hour earlier than it did. Jesus, that movie dragged on.

Didn't like being left waiting for the sequel to The Hobbit. I am seriously starting to hate those deus ex machina giant eagles.

What's there to point out? It's an effect to make the shooting over the top, just like all the other violence in the movie was over the top. FFS, the second person to die in the movie was blown to pieces by one pistol shot.

Whether or not it is an homage to spaghetti westerns is debatable, although in some Sergio Leone movies, a single stick of dynamite was enough to blow up an entire room, but it was a stylistic choice.

Best not to biatch about inaccuracies in a Western that had songs by Jim Croce and Rick Ross.

Saw Les Mis yesterday. It was good but Russel Crowe brought down the whole movie. He is a good actor but he can't sing and act at the same time. The whole movie would have been improved had they cast Jason Segel as Javert.

Spaghetti westerns can run on the long side. Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was almost 3 hours, as was Once Upon A Time in the West and Duck You Sucker. Since QT steals a lot from Sergio Leone, the run time seemed about right.

With the exception of Reservior Dogs and Death Proof, all his movies have been at least 2 and a half hours (Kill Bill was a 4-hour movie), so I was expecting it.

I think a lot of us can suspend disbelief when it comes to most of the violence since we fortunately don't see much of it. The thing texdent and I were talking about was more of a problem of physics than degree of violence, though. Django shoots her while she is slightly to the left and below him so logically she would tumble directly away from him but is instead yanked through the door to another room far to the left of Django. It's admittedly minor but just threw off the rest of the biggest scene in the movie for me.

Popcorn Johnny: Django is QT's worst film.

Inglorious Basterds takes that prize and it was awesome.

The Incredible Sexual Egg: Popcorn Johnny: Something I really didn't understand about Django was Dr Schultz's extreme reaction to being asked to shake Candy's hand.  Seemed like QT struggled to find a way to get the film the the place he wanted it to go.

Candy had an equally extreme reaction to Schultz not wanting to shake his hand. Schultz was either completely disgusted by him at that point and wanted nothing to do with him, or he suspected him of being up to no good.

That's the way I took it. They're almost out the door and Candie is standing awkwardly in the next room and wants to shake his hand. It felt like shenanigans was afoot.

The sister being shot I thought was meant to be overly dramatic and comedic. The way he had the girl say goodbye to her and then shot her I thought was funny. Not as funny as the big lady running full-tilt out of the house holding up her dress.

I don't think that Crowe can't sing...but growling in a rock band is a bit different than the nuanced singing required in what is essentially an opera, and it definitely was the wrong key for his voice.

Hvaing said that, i thought the the change in movie where they had ValJean push Javert off the bridge made the whole life-long pursuit of ValJean much more reasonable.

So, the physics of what looked like a side pocket shot in a game of pool bothers you, but the fact that one person got their head blown off, while another person, who was shot with the same gun, only got a tiny hole in their chest was totally cool?

They are direct agents of Heaven on Middle Earth, and like all divine processes they operate according to God's plans, not man's. So in that respect any intervention at all is a boon not to be questioned - especially concerning the lengths or convenience of that intervention.

But yeah, woulda been nice if they'd flown them a little closer ;)

Went to see Les Mis yesterday.

GOD that movie dragged in parts. Granted... I have not seen the musical; this is my first experience with it. However it was too long for what it was. It had a serious problem with its narrative structure.

What I mean by this is that every time there was an exciting sequence, whether it be action, nationalist singing, or events related to the main crux of the story (the conflict between Javert and Valjean) it would be follow by a slow sequence easily 3 or 4 times as long as the preceding one.

Maybe that's fine for another story, but one that is almost 3 hours long can't be sustained that way. Case in point... the end. Spoilers. It takes a long farking time for him to die, and then you see a sequence of the dead rebels on the barricades which lasts about a minute. It doesn't work.

And if anyone wants to say that I have no attention span, that's BS. Not two days ago I watch Ran again and loved it. I'm going to get to Spartacus in a couple of days and that one is almost an hour longer than Les Mis.

The Eagles are agents of Manwe. The wizards' origin is less clear but could be from Iluvatar.

Of course in the actual Hobbit book there was no reference to this and the Eagles were portrayed as being potentially wicked, evil creatures.
