I have always been a sucker for stencil art. You have a lot of good stuff. Are you looking to keep doing vinyl or are you looking for ideas for a new "canvas" as well? If you have access to a screen of if you can think of a way to stencil over text like a blown up news article you could do something political or something to honor the kids of Newtown. If you want to keep it light there are some beautiful skylines you could do. If you want to stick to the vinyl you gotta keep with the music theme maybe go really old school. Old Sinatra, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Herb Alpert, something of that nature.

Subby here...

Here's my drunken idea from last night...

I've gotten kind of bored doing all these musician images. Started doing them for money and just burned myself out on it. I still do them occasionally if the price is right, but for the most part it's like hell for me...very tedious work.

So I thought, I really enjoy the design end of things, and I'm a teacher by trade, so why not ask Farkers for some ideas of what THEY would want to stencil, and I can design up some images, scan 'em, and post them here for Farkers to cut and spray on their own? Those that want to learn, that is. I've found that through cutting a pre-designed piece, you tend to learn the tips and tricks of more experienced stencil artists a bit faster than, say, setting out on your own (like I did back in 2002).

So anyway, I guess my boredom could be your gain. Of course, I'd love to do a followup thread eventually where folks can post pics of what the ended up making...that'd be kind of cool.

So I guess what I'm looking for is this:

- What would you farkers like to stencil (subject matter)? Knowing Fark, I'm sure ther will be some crazy suggestions, but that's OK.

- Difficulty level (as you can see, I can make super-detailed 6-layer stencils, or simple 1-layer stencils. For this project, 1-layer is probably best, but how precise can I make these cuts?) See the image of the blade, the penny (for scale), and the stencil cuts of one of the members of Wu-Tang Clan? That's probably too much for now for most new stencil artists...unless you guys want a big challenge.

That's pretty much it. The funniest/coolest/most farker-motivating design ideas will get drawn up & scanned. Keep in mind this will take me some time, so I only really want to get into it if people will actually take a crack at cutting one of them.

Anyway...hope to hear some good ideas and then I'll get to designing!

PEACE.

SubBass49 - That's very nice of you to offer, and your work looks stellar. I don't have any ideas, but maybe someone else can help bring you out of your funk. The only thing I ever spray paint are my iron deck chairs.

Thanks for the compliment.

Just think a bit about stuff you might want to try. Depending on the material you use, you can also create hand-printed t-shirts from your stencils. If that interests you, let me know, and I'll give you instructions.

I did a few really cool shirts...67 Lincoln Continental...Louis Armstrong...Portraits of my daughters...SDSU...

That'd be doable. Might take a while and be pretty complex. If I were to design that one up, I'd probably limit it to the kid with the laser-gun though for clarity...especially if it were to go as a 1-layer piece (recommended for beginners). Keep in mind that for the complicated ones (like you see in the link) each color is a separate and distinct stencil, cut out and aligned with the others.

If you want to do it, I can get you a png of just the kid. I'm a beginner, so simple would be good.

Most definitely...if you can set it up for 8.5x11 paper, that'd be even better. Heck, I might be able to have it done relatively quick in that case.

Ultra Kid Stencil Design (Full Size)

OK...a few things as you get started...

1. Use a sharp blade. X-Acto knives dull pretty quickly. If you only have one blade, start with the most precise cuts first so your blade is at it's sharpest for those.

2. Depending on how you want to use your stencil, choose your material wisely. A stencil cut on normal paper wont last long, and is actually harder to cut. For spraypaint uses, I suggest tracing the design onto a manilla folder...they cut like butter and hold up pretty well, plus they're cheap. For t-shirt printing, cut from overhead transparencies (trace design with a fine-point sharpie for best results).

3. When you're all done and have sprayed it, I'd love to see how it came out...post pics, hit me up on facebook...whatever works.

4. Take your time! There's no rush in cutting a stencil. It can be dangerous to rush!

5. After you cut this and branch out into your own designs, note the way areas are "bridged." Bridging is what separates good stencils from crap ones. Hide the bridges within the shapes of the images rather than making them arbitrary, and your work will look better and better. Bridging well is essential in doing cartoon/videogame characters because of their reliance on outlines (as you can see here).

Anyway...pardon any wobbly line work in there...it's freezing ass cold in my place, and my fingers were a bit numb. Also, feel free to "8-bit up" the lettering if you want...I was just trying to provide cover for the missing lower half of the body.

Would Nixon with a dick-nose be your first-choice, and would you actually be motivated enough to cut it out?

Dicknose Nixon would be a great target to shoot at so whatever it took would be worth it

lol...then dick-nose Nixon it is...gonna do this one digitally rather than freehand it like the last one (my football game is on)

Will post when done. Same cutting advice as the last one though...

DICKNOSENIXON (NSFW)

Because I used a digital filter to reduce the levels, just ignore the small pixels and stuff when you trace this one. I bridged the few islands that were there for you, so you should be able to just cut all the black parts out.

Doesn't look much like Nixon to me personally, because his nose was so much of his personality, but I assure you that's him with a dick for a nose.

/now I'm off to erase my search history before the wife wonders why I was looking for dick pics...lol

Oops...reviewing it, I missed a bridge...leave a gap over the eyebrow on the light side of the face to keep the forehead connected to the outer paper. If that's confusing lemme know and I'll go back & edit it.

screechingbitermonkey: I love you. Yay!

Haha...glad you like it!

Feel free to thicken up some of the smaller bits as long as it doesn't fark with your overall look too much. The reason being that you want to make sure your cuts are big enough for the paint to go through, AND the more you spray a stencil, the more paint builds up in the cuts, eventually filling them in.

2012-12-31 03:30:40 AM
BTW...those of you that are doing these...when you go to spray your piece, use light "dustings" of spraypaint over a flat-laying stencil on a FLAT surface. Mask off any space not covered by the paper/plastic/cardstock you cut from to avoid "overspray," and you may want to consider some gentle spray-adhesive on the back of your stencil to avoid "underspray" (blurring at the edges).

If any of you plan on making shirts with these, let me know and I'll type up instructions...

I saw the sneaker ones and wonder if you could do maybe some roller skate stuff, specifically quad speed skates. I know tons of derby girls (and possibly jam and speed skaters) who would love that.

The Riedell 265 boot is pretty iconic (http://www.roller.riedellskates.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductName=Wi cked) but some of the other boots on that site ought to give you ideas. Sure Grip has nice boots also but I don't think they're as pretty.

I could also suggest a ton of other stuff... a helmet with a jammer star, a skater, things like that but I don't know how easy/hard any of these things would be to do (or OP's level of interest in roller derby).

Since I'd just be designing up the stencil for you and your friends to cut out, I'll take a crack at it. Normally I probably wouldn't cut a design like that, but if you want to take a crack at it, I'm all about it!

Part of this is me spreading the knowledge of stenciling to people that might have thought about trying it, but didn't know where to start...(PLUS, I love how creative farkers are)

brb...hopefully with a design for you...

Here ya go...cut out all the black parts to create the shadow-layer (details)

If you want to put this on a background color (making it a 2-layer stencil) you'll have to cut out the full shape (kind of like a silhouette) of the skate...meaning you'll have to keep the shape of the wheels in mind (among other parts)...

Here's a rough version of what I'm talking about...

maybe some eggs and toast to go with the bacon? So, If someone uses them, either display all three together as stenciled breakfast, or put one item each in different places, to trick people into thinking there's a connection between locations.
