Dave Barry hasn't been funny since the look on Dave's father's face when he impregnated Dave's mother.

poor Dave Barry. Before the internet he could say all the mildly witty things we were thinking but couldnt express to a wide audience. Now that we have forums and fb we can make our own wry comments about daily life and be just as funny.

Oh, I don't care. I'll click whatever if I feel like reading a story or column (unlike slideshows which contain little content per page). I just couldn't believe how long the last page was compared to the first two.

Dave Berry is one of my few claims to fame.

My last name is unusual and he printed it in response to an article I mailed him years ago.  Google me and his column comes up.  I love him for that and the column is hysterical.  The other time I pop up is when I was on  Doogie Howser, M.D.  NPH was cool and, thanks to him, I have a Bacon Number of two.

This made me chuckle, even after the November Democaplypse:
The emerging front runner is Mitt Romney, who combines a strong resume of executive experience with the easygoing natural human warmth of a parking meter. Still in contention, however, is Newt Gingrich, whose popularity surges briefly, only to wane when voters begin to grasp the fact that he is Newt Gingrich. This opens the door for Rick Santorum, whose strong suit is that he has a normal first name, and who apparently at one point was a senator or governor of Pennsylvania or possibly Vermont.

Same. You can't do satire if you're not willing to offend - and his stuff is all middle of the road non-offensive.

Eh, the election stuff was ok, the NFL jokes were good, the unmanned drone jokes were stupid and the greek/spain economic stuff should have been aborted by a minigun.

He writes for a newspaper in Florida. It's satire for the belt-onion crowd.

"Speaking of consumer danger: In the largest product recall ever, the Food and Drug Administration orders supermarkets to pull 148 million of the new Iranian-made Twinkies off the shelves after one of them explodes, obliterating most of Cleveland."

If only.

He's sort of funny, just not nearly as funny as he thinks he is.

2012-12-30 08:25:54 AM
With a year as batshiat insane as 2012 was, it's probably pretty hard for any humorist to come up with anything about it that's outrageous or silly enough to be funny. Most of Dave's other "Years In Review" made me laugh, or at least chuckle. This year's; all I thought was that he's 90% spot-on.

2012-12-30 08:32:48 AM

He doesn't even try to be original any more.

I always look forward to Dave Barry's Year In Review. I also look forward to all the Dave Barry hate on Fark whenever his name comes up. I find both of these things amusing.

This is very true. I am at my parents' house looking over at a row of Barry books on the shelf that I used to read to pieces. But he doesn't hold up for me in the least. I think it's because I go to Fark or Reddit for this sort of trifling snark anymore. I'm sure I changed too, but not that much. I am still pretty immature.

Dave Barry printed my submission to his Christmas list a few years back, so my name googled also pops up his column. My typing teacher was the mother of the actress that played the nurse on Doogie Houser. We are practically twins.

or something.

DrD'isInfotainment: He's mildly funny, but he's no Carl Hiaasen, who is the Founding Father of the FARK Florida tag

Which is really amusing given how good friends they are. I think they've collaborated on at least two books.

Dave Barry has always been amusing; I think the problem is that he should have retired from the newspaper business, where he's no longer very funny, about ten years ago.

What we're witnessing here is what we would be witnessing if Bill Watterson or Gary Larson were still writing cartoons... someone who has become repetitive in his original art form, and needs to move on to something else.

2012-12-30 09:49:47 AM
"Same. You can't do satire if you're not willing to offend - and his stuff is all middle of the road non-offensive."

What kind of Fark nonsense is this? Just because everything he writes doesn't supposedly step on someone's toes doesn't mean it isn't satire. And anyways I doubt you read his article since he does go after many stupid things that happened over the year.

And his stuff is "middle of the road"? No shiat, he isn't writing for the Village Voice. For a column it was funny but I sorry that you expected him to come right out and just call people "assholes".

So much hate. Yall're acting like an unmanned Predator drone forced you to read the whole article.

I laughed. I grew up reading his books and columns.

2012-12-30 10:30:16 AM
Dave Barry may be past his prime, but what is worse IMO is that every local newspaper seems to have spawned a wannabe. Where I used to live in NYS, the paper has a guy named Dave something who tries to do the same shtick with a Jewish twist, and a woman with a column named "Lisa's Laws" which is the same tripe regurgitated over and over again, only she has an Italian uncle named Tony and a snowflake named Bella. I just don't get the love for this type of newspaper column. Maybe every so often, but not every week and not the same stuff over again. If I had read one more column from Lisa about how her NYCity friends don't understand living in the wilds of upstate NY, I'd have blown my brains out.

Luckily, I was smart enough to stop reading/cancel my subscription/move away from that hellhole.

Dave Barry is about as funny as a Garfield comic strip.

Well, I for one, think Dave Barry is funny. And he is funny with out saying f*ck, c*nt, shiat or g*d d*mn. I find that it is possible to find the writers on fark.com funny the writers on cracked.com funny and even old comedians funny.

He's not Stewart or Colbert, so his political humor is by definition not funny.

/every time Colbert takes a shiat he names each of his turds after a Republican politician, and like everything else he says that's the god dam funniest thing in the history of humor, no exceptions.

He could have just used this one sentence:

"... a textbook example of what this great experiment called "American democracy" is all about: two opposing political parties, each with valid positions, spending hundreds of millions of dollars on comically simplistic radio and TV ads designed by consultants to terrify ill-informed halfwits."

and it would have covered the whole year.

I liked Dave Barry back when I was a little kid and printed newspapers were still a thing.  I still have a place in my heart for all the laughter he's given me, but I can find much more absurd, funnier things on the internet now.

Sorry, Dave.

Haters gonna hate, I guess. Help yourself to another brilliant 7-point relationship article from a Yahoo.com 'journalist' fresh off of their copy machine internship.

In Florida, the shooting death of Trayvon Martin sets off a passionate, weeks-long national debate among politicians, journalists, pundits, talk-show hosts, activists, celebrities, bloggers, anti-gun groups, pro-gun groups, Al Sharpton, 9Beers and millions of ordinary citizens, not a single one of whom knows what actually happened.

I'll be damned.

There were some good moments in there... I appreciate his ability to evoke a certain kind of imagery. I don't know how else to explain it. I can picture what he says and it makes it funnier to me. I felt similarly about Mitch Hedberg - the humor was as much in the imagery as the content (file under D... for donut), and I liked that. It's possible that I'm totally lame though.

Not as good as previous efforts, but still had some laughs (Florida's electoral votes going to the Kansas CIty Chiefs was funny.)
I guess it was tougher to write a review this year when the two biggest stories were elementary school students and movie theater patrons being gunned down.

I know a girl who says more than once, every time I see her, "I'm so funny!! Oh my gawd, aren't I hilarious?!?" And she's serious. She really is the funniest person she knows.

Dave Barry doesn't strike me as that type. I feel like he thinks he's silly and that people are intermittently grinning while reading his stuff. She truly believes she's the funniest person anyone could possibly know in real life, though.

In conclusion, everyone stop hatin on Dave Barry. Hate the girl I know instead.

While I haven't really found him funny since print newspapers were in their heyday, most of this piece included, I must admit

"With polls showing a very tight race, the final weeks of the campaign are a textbook example of what this great experiment called "American democracy" is all about: two opposing political parties, each with valid positions, spending hundreds of millions of dollars on comically simplistic radio and TV ads designed by consultants to terrify ill-informed halfwits."

Animatronik: slackist: I don't get all the dislike for Barry, is it an American or a political thing?

I've always found his writing to be quite amusing, non-offensive and occasionally quote poignant.

He's not Stewart or Colbert, so his political humor is by definition not funny.

/every time Colbert takes a shiat he names each of his turds after a Republican politician, and like everything else he says that's the god dam funniest thing in the history of humor, no exceptions.

I see someone is upset about the death of Ham Rove.

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: fusillade762: jaylectricity: Also, I like how they get three page clicks out of the first five months, then dump the rest of the year on the third page.

Click the little button that says "Print" near the top of TFA. Or the little printer icon near the bottom. Or the link near the bottom that says "Full story".

Get it all on one page.

Please don't give such confusing and complicated instructions. Remember, this is Fark.

I grew up reading Dave Barry's columns in the Tropic (The Miami Herald's version of the New York Times), and I though his stuff was hilarious at best, chuckle-worthy at worst. His year end reviews and "Horrible Christmas Gift" lists (with honest-to-God stuff like owl vomit and purses made from bull testicles).

I also got into Carl Hiaasen (Miami's answer to Mark Twain) because of Dave, so he gets points for that too.

daveUSMC: Wow. talk about superiority complexes... I bet you're all a riot at parties. Must you ruin everything for me?
I used to be passionate about politics. After too much Fark, I really just hate everyone. Now you're deconstructing and demeaning the shiat out of a newspaper humor columnist who has managed to somehow not be depressingly condescending and nasty while making jokes, something that must infuriate some of you bitter titty-giblets.

Just because you might be more intelligent than the average bear, doesn't mean you have to absolutely shiat all over everything, This is like slightly more sophisticated YouTube commenting.

Don't do this to a childhood favorite of mine. Fark all of the e-critics. You're like Red Sox fans: inflated self images, obnoxious, and haughty basement dwelling trollops who... holy crap I'm acting like you now.

Thanks, dicks.
The internet sucks.

Sorry Dave. I like him as well. "Your favorite thing sucks." - the Internet

quickdraw: poor Dave Barry. Before the internet he could say all the mildly witty things we were thinking but couldnt express to a wide audience. Now that we have forums and fb we can make our own wry comments about daily life and be just as funny.

Yea, he's just like the internet. Except for his well constructed sentences and correct punctuation and coherent thoughts and lack of racial slurs and.......

FTFA: "Did anything good come out of 2012?"

Compelling question. I don't have a good answer for it. Our President was reelected and I voted for him. Still wish he would take the GOP to task, though. Maybe next year.

For the Dave Barry haters:

A journey into my colon -- and yours

MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here, but: Have you ever seen a space shuttle launch? This is pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle. There are times when you wish the commode had a seat belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet.

Nope. I still get a laugh at his stuff.
