They're copying some movie where they kidnap the bank manager and make them open the vault at night.  Except it doesn't work like that.  Bank vaults have time locks preventing them from being opened after hours.

Near Baltimore, A Bank of America manager had two criminals come to his home and demand that he go to the bank and open the vault.  He explained to them that the vault could not be opened.  So the two men tied him up and forced him to watch them repeatedly rape his wife.  Then they took them both to the basement tied them up and set the house on fire.  Luckily the fire went out on it's own.  The criminals stole everything of value in the house including their cars.  The manager's SUV turned up a couple days later in Baltimore.  The person claimed they bought the new SUV for $500.

Ah, the old "bomb around the neck" trick. You don't need a bank employee for that, though. I've heard pizza delivery drivers work just fine.

This kind of bank robbery predates time locks on vaults and movies this has still worked in smaller cities and credit unions in the last few years.

Titus happened when I lived down in Southern Maryland. A bank manager and her two young kids were kidnapped and she was forced to rob the bank at 8 am.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/24/AR20 08 092401327.html

It was crazy. They are only a few roads out of St. Mary's County and they road blocked every one of them. The bank manger was not involved. Three idiots from Lexington Park went and spent money at Best Buy and then buried the rest in their backyard. (If I'm remembering correctly)

Damn amateurs. Everyone knows you're supposed to hire a crew of misfits and dig a tunnel under the bank vault and then blast your way in.

I keep trying to tell people, stop robbing bank branches.

If you want to rob a bank do it from the top, from the executive offices. Most of the time nothing comes of it because everyone's embarrassed.

I suppose it depends on whether you intend on making a deposit or a withdrawal.

Kidnapping a bank manager's family, wiring the manager up with a mike and wireless video, and having them rob their own bank could be fun.

Bank employee taken hostage in Phoenix, police looking for suspect

Wait. If if he took the teller hostage, wouldn't he be with the teller? Have they tried looking next to her?

That was my first thought, also. Sounds like someone figured to grab a teller instead of a pizza driver, as a better plan. Only sounds like they failed worse.

I love this movie -- especially the end, which was repeated weekly on the opening montage of "The Fall Guy".

Shoot to kill. Clancy Brown, Sidney Poitier, Tom Berenger and Kirstie Alley. Not a bad flick.
