I bought a GoPro last month and have been using it as a dash cam. Haven't caught much worth while, though.

I've seen crazy stuff that I wish I would have had a cam for, and maybe I'll get lucky.

I would like a regular dashcam that has time and date burn-in, but one thing at a time I guess.

I would suggest everyone get a dash cam. I have one that showed that I entered an intersection well after the light turned green and was slammed into by a bicyclist. He ended up being airlifted to the hospital and has tried suing several times with different lawyers. The dashcam card that the police entered as evidence stops the suits as soon as the lawyer finds out.

Please expand on that statement... Why wouldn't they? Affraid of filming cops?

2012-12-29 10:10:33 PM

drjekel_mrhyde: Better check if it's legal in your state to have a dashcam

In what states would it not be legal to have a dash cam? No one has an expectation of privacy when driving down the road.

It's true that some states have laws regarding audio recordings that are not revealed to all who are recorded. It's also true that a lot of these dash cams record both audio and video. Turning off the audio recording would make these completely legal in all states. Even so, the courts have regularly overturned the recording laws when the recording happened in public, in a place with no expectation of privacy. Generally, these charges are only brought when cops are recorded and the prosecution usually drops the charges before it ever gets to the courts.

The only real risk would be recording a cop who had pulled you over in a state with 2-party audio recording laws. The interesting bit is that most cops have absolutely no expectation of privacy, as they're already recording themselves. If the cops are busting you for recording them, it can only be because they've done something very wrong, something for which you'll be far better off having your own recording of.

the rear side of his car was hit hard by flying parts, causing him to skid. If he hadn't steered into the skid, he would have spun around clockwise. I think he did a great job keeping control of the vehicle. Running over a few parts after the main wreck was merely incidental.

So much more. MANY cases of trying roll across the hood of a stopped vehicle.

And here's a scary, crazytown video of another car chasing him down while he's in reverse to try and run into him. And you see how intimidating the situation can be as they approach. From what I can tell though, most are either just going to play the person if they don't just run off, or try to sue them in court. They're probably connected to the Russian Mafia and have a judge who rubber-stamps it for them, but a case with dashcam evidence is too egregiousness to rubber-stamp like that.

There was a story a few weeks back about how some elephants in a traveling circus got stranded outside in Siberia when their insulated trailer burned down. They were stuck out in the cold for a while, and they would have gotten frostbite, except a quick-thinking trainer kept blood flowing to their extremities by feeding them ten gallons of vodka, cut with water.

In other words: "Hey, do we have any redundancy whatsoever in the system for transporting the elephants? No? Then we're farked, unless someone just happens to be carrying ten gallons of vodk--oh, well, okay then."

Lsherm:What model, if you don't mind me asking?  I'm shopping right now because of this thread.

I bought this one. When I bought it yesterday, there was only the one bad review, and everything that he was biatching about was due to him not reading the description and expecting a high-def camera. Look on youtube for samples of video taken from the R300, quality seems fairly decent to me, and I have realistic expectations from it, so I think it should be ok.

Basically, I didn't think having a camera with enough resolution to make out license plates was nearly as important as the GPS logging. I couldn't really think of any situation where it would be critical to get the license plate (The only time I thought that I would need that was for something like a hit & run, which would have to take place right in front of the camera to be able to get the license, which didn't seem very likely to me). My main criteria was to show things like a car swerving in front of me and slamming on the brakes and then reversing in to me (Which was what happened in the insurance scam), and to show that I was doing the speed limit while passing a speed trap while another car which looked very similar to mine drove past at around the speed that I was accused of going.

From what I saw while researching these, most of the people who gave bad reviews were either expecting way too much from a sub $100 camera, or had purchased from a shady seller who sent an used or damaged unit. I bought mine from a seller who had the unit in stock at the Amazon warehouse, many of the other sellers drop ship directly from China. I'd avoid those sellers.

thisiszombocom: id like to know too. where do you mount it so it can see your dash (speedometer specifically)?

With this model, you don't need to have it see the dash. GPS coordinates, as well as speed and heading are logged with the video. The built in software shows a synchronized stream of both cameras, plus a Google Maps overlay of your route/speed. This is all exportable as an AVI file for playback on any device.

But if a giant debris field comes flying across the highway, I sure as hell would not STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. The car that got hit had the right idea: Get away from that shiat as fast as you can!

Well, that explains how they kept an elephant in the Alaska Zoo (Anchorage) as long as they did just as well.

For awhile when things were opening up there, Alaska Airlines was doing direct flights between Alaska and various towns in the Russian Far East. There was more than once they had to de-ice the plane with vodak because that was available in the town, and proper de-icer wasn't.

If you down a whole bottle of vodak that's down to -40 degrees bad things happen though.

RandomRandom: drjekel_mrhyde: Better check if it's legal in your state to have a dashcam

===============

I've been screwed several times by lying cops, and an audio or video recording would have really made my court appearances interesting. I've thought about installing a dash cam on my car, but the fact remains that the police will smash it, or pull the memory, when they see it. I would need to come up with a fool proof method of hiding the thing since I don't want to spend the money on a dash cam only to Officer Shiat-bag perform a cam-Maglight "tune-up" on my expensive camera.

Some dash cams that are built into a replacement rear view mirror. There are also some weatherproof ones that mount to a license plate. Either one would be unlikely to be seen by cops pulling you over. (a lot of the rear view mirror ones are backup cameras, you don't want those.) If the cop did see it, you could always claim it was a backup cam.

You can also get some that are just small bullet or pinhole cameras. They could be placed anywhere, the headrest, the headliner. Cams with all the bells and whistles can be expensive, but some fully functional models are very cheap - less than $25. At that price, you could afford to lose a few to a cop's maglite.

I'd recommend you get a standard $25 version and another smaller, bullet camera. If the cops find and break the obvious one, you'll have it all recorded on the second cam, and maybe get their job in the bargain. Busting a citizen's camera isn't a job stopper, lying about it can be. Perjury is a hell of a thing for a cop to carry around, often it's a career ender.

95629: Why do russian cars have dashcams?

/curious

Yeah, I was curious about that myself when I saw the number of dash cam videos coming out of Russia, so I researched it a little. Based on what I found it seems that the following are rampant in Russia:
* Insurance scams, like the one linked to where the driver backed into the other car and was likely going to claim the other driver rear-ended him. Pedestrian "fall-downs" are also common.
* Hit-and-run
* It's not uncommon if you get in an accident for the other driver to get out of the car and beat the snot out of you, especially if he's accompanied by a couple of buddies
* People with money and influence "fixing" the official record of the accident so it's your fault
* Police scams where they take a bribe and give you the ticket anyway
* Insurance companies denying claims out-of-hand

The only defense against these shenanigans is video evidence.

I'd like to visit Russia someday soon. Lots of lovely architecture, history, artwork, and museums, all of which I know I will love. I will NOT be renting a car.

Oznog: RandomRandom: logieal: I bought a GoPro last month and have been using it as a dash cam. Haven't caught much worth while, though.

Dedicated dash cams are a lot cheaper than a Go Pro. Many high quality dash cams cost less than $50.

The GoPro is great for what it does, but it has an entirely different feature set than the dash cams. The good dash cams record a continuous loop of video files, they have a button to push if you want to save (write protect) a specific recording, like when an accident happens. The better ones are continuously plugged into a cig lighter and turn off when the car is turned off. Some even save recordings when the sense a high g load. A few have dual cameras, one for front, another for back, both recorded simultaneously.

Lots of reviews on Youtube for any who are interested.

Hmm looks like some are 30fps HD recorders for under $25!!

I don't think I can turn down that sort of deal. But I'd check the reviews first.

I will take your word about Winnipeg, all I know is that the shipping company I used to work for sent me to Murmansk to help set up a liaison office there, it was one of the most miserable trips I have ever taken, farking freezing, lousy hotel, worse food, and to top it all off the Navy contract we were working on got canceled after I had done most of the work. so my memory may be a bit biased

I just checked... shockingly Winnipeg is colder than Murmansk in winter. Worse record lows and worse average lows.

But they have much better food and hotels.

I've never been to Murmansk, but I've been to Tromsø/Norway in the winter, which is about the same latitude, and I've spent an entire winter in Alaska's interior. While it's only my personal experience, Alaska is far beyond anything I've experienced in northern Norway.
