Technically, yes.  it can be amended.  Realistically, there is no way that this would happen.

This whole idea of an Obama third term has come from conservative talk radio.  I've had numerous people at work say that they "heard on the radio" that the Republicans being forced to give Obama a third term.  This defies the most basic common sense.

This is right out of the Republican playbook.  They claimed the EXACT same thing following the second election of Clinton.  The Republican party really needs to get a new dirty tricks guidebook.  The one they're using is completely worn out.

There is some great comedy during those debate. Something refreshing about political parties directly addressing wach other which can be facinaring.

Or... rather than developing a new book of dirty tricks they could try being honest and good people who mean well for all their fellow Americans.

Okay... okay... I'm sorry. I know... that's pretty much impossible. But hey... one can still hope that Republicans will manage to become good people again someday, even if that hope is unlikely.

I think the right wing is mind numbingly stupid right now... but this isn't a good idea, either.

Please move on, bozos.

Term limits have always been ridiculous. It's nothing but an arbitrary constraint on the will of the people.

2012-12-29 05:27:02 PM
That's funny. I was thinking exactly this same thing the other day. Term limits, especially at EO level are very short sighted.

2012-12-29 05:27:33 PM
yes it could be, but not much chance of it happening. That said the whargarble and derp from the repubs and teabaggers if it did happen would be epic.

The U.S. is ruled as a majority with respect to the rights of the minority. Just because "the people" want a president for life doesn't mean it's a good idea. It's stupid that we've got what amounts to Senators for life. It's not the kind of job that is hurt by getting a fresh point of view once in a while.

FDR is the ONLY president to have more than 2 terms. And he's why the Constitution was changed.

2012-12-29 05:33:05 PM
The way Presidents have to spend their first term angling for a second term so they can get things done is completely asinine. The last three Presidents, INCLUDING Bush, did a better job the second four years when they didn't have to worry about re-election than they did in the first term. Already we've seen Obama be a tougher negotiator in recent weeks than he ever was before--just because he doesn't have to worry about making nice with anyone.

The better thing to do, if they want to amend the Constitution, is give Presidents a single six or eight year one-time term of office, let him run the country for an extended period of time, not have to spend four years campaigning non-stop and trying to be President at the same time. However, multiple terms of office are kind of the thing the Founders didn't want to happen, which was why they put term limits in in the first place.

It's a good troll.  The left should play with this for a couple of years, really get the wingnuts going.

FDR was the Obama of his time. The Republicans loathed him with the power of ten thousand suns. So much so that even NOW, 60+ years after his death, they still do their best to disparage his accomplishments and tear down the social network that he helped establish.

I suspect the President will get much of the same treatment long after he's retired from office.

dstanley: But the froth and spittle would be incredible to see.

Oh man, there would be aneurysms and strokes and meltdowns on a tectonic scale, and the resulting death, if it could be kept within that particularly shallow end of the gene pool, would be for the betterment of society in general. But unfortunately the derp would spread like widlfire and innocent people would get hurt. The comedy value would be uncredible, though. How good would it be to have a live video feed into the Nugent household if Fox news showed film of people hammering "Obama '16" campaign signs in their front yards?

I am all for it, if only for increasing sales of Rolaids, Tums and PepcidAC in Republican districts. As far as it being worthy of a constitutional amendment though, probably not such a hot idea.

But if it passed, I would seriously invest in esophageal pharma in KY, IN, WV, SC, OK, TN, GA, AL, NB, WY, KS, LA, SD, ND, TX, AR, MI, UT, AZ, NC, ID, MS, MO and of course AK. Or maybe CVS and Rite-Aid.

I don't think you could get an amendment through in less than two terms, so Obama wouldn't be the one to benefit.

It's in my old argument about not giving the current president extraordinary powers because the next will have them also.

Not only would it never make it through 2/3 of the states in time, I don't think it would be enacted in the term of the sitting president. It would likely go into effect for the following president.

Well, since he hasn't started his second term yet, it makes just as much sense to ask whether we should consider giving him a fourth or fifth term.

Eediots.

He wouldn't want it. Trust me, he's looking forward to his retirement.

This.
Everyone's getting delusions of grandure because of Obama's reelection. The system simply isn't susceptible to that kind of emotion.
He's got limited bargaining power and going after constitutional items is simply not happening.

I love how Republican affinities are Constitutionally inviolate, and to even think about changing them is thoughtcrime, but they will gladly amend the shiat out of that thing to stick it to the gays, the flag burners, the women-who-think-they-control-their-own-body, or any FDR wannabes who sucker the masses with effective policies and a stronger weave for the social safety net. Statesmen all.

Sure, easiest thing in the world, in theory. You just pass a new amendment to repeal the 22nd Amendment. It's been done before, with the 21st Amendment, which repealed the 18th Amendment. However, I expect 90+% of the American electorate would oppose such an action, including nearly all liberals/Democrats. You only have to imagine what this country would have been like with a three- or four-term George W. Bush. NO THANK YOU.

I have no idea what he has in mind, but he's still quite young and I'm sure he expects to be an activist ex-president, on the Clinton model, for a long time to come.
