FTA: And according to the most recent league stats, females make up 44 percent of the NFL's fan base

I'm guessing the NFL made that stat up to trick advertisers into paying more for current campaigns and to get some feminine product advertising dollars. Gonna see a whole lot of tampon ads next year. The pink uniforms for awareness thing was more market research than charity. I would love to see Peyton Manning do a tampon ad. Although Jay Cutler is the more appropriate spokesman.

I guess if they're including women who just like an excuse to drink beer, eat barbeque, and hang out with their friends on a Sunday, I could see that being 44%.

That's how I treat football when the Vikings usually get eliminated from the playoffs in November.

/Good luck this afternoon, AP.

If you count it as having to sit in the same room with their spouses on sundays with the television on, then yes. That makes up most of the women "fans" I know. One woman's boyfriend makes her wear a different Giants jersey each week. She's just happy to hostess and hang out with the other girlfriends/wives.

My guess as well.  I don't buy the NFL's own claim of 44% for one second.  I know many women who like football but my guess would still be 25% or maybe even less.  I wonder if they count mothers of kids who play football?  How did they come up with that number?

For every one of those commercials there are 20 where Dumbass Husband gets shown up by the Frugal Wife who's smart enough to use Product X, or some variation of that theme.

And now that you mention it, I can't think of any commercials like the one you mention.  I'm sure there are some...maybe some idiotic piss-beer commercial... but I can't think of any.  Maybe they're local?  By contrast, I can instantly recall lots of commercials for the NFL that have female fans in them, and for a phone company that had a diehard female fan checking games on her mobile.

So yeah, let's negotiate!

Stuff like this, yes.  There are varying degrees of female fans out there.  My best friend has a 3" Steeler logo on her right leg (it's actually for her dad, but still) and her old apartment's living room was, quite literally, the room from that "what's with the lamp?" commercial for NFL Shop a few years back.  Plus about 20-30 pieces of Steeler clothing to add in.  Her most prized possession out of that, at least in my view, is a framed Terrible Towel signed by Myron about four months before he passed.  You know, to go with the five other ones she uses on game days.

Unlikely. The NFL doesn't really give a crap who pays for advertising for their games: The networks pay them a flat fee, then handle the advertising.

There's a reason why football games have tons of ads for other shows: What the network are really paying for when they enter a football TV contract is advertising for other shows on the network, because football is watched by so many people.

Here's my general rule: You can make fun of me all you want as long as it's actually funny. And that was funny. I larfed. Also, you are a jerk.

OK back on topic. I'm with the guy who said that the NFL made up the 44% number. I don't think it's as low as 5% either, though. My theory is that the NFL makes up this number, puts out pink jerseys (barf), does a month of breast cancer "awareness," and then has some GQ blowhard visit farking OAKLAND of all places to do a story on it. So then what happens? Just as the author says, women start to wonder if they're missing out on something & perhaps the NFL pick up some new fans. You have to admit, as far as sports go, women are an untapped market. And we've known for a while now that the NFL was going to ramp up their marketing to women. This is just another plank in the platform.

That being said, I am juuuuust about tired of people trying to make everything into a gender issue. Sports are for boys! Shopping is for girls! Lame. Just like what you like & quit trying to justify it to anyone. And on the flip side of the coin, quit demanding that others justify what they like to you. Just watch the game & high five everyone when something good happens. It's not hard.

So the nfl has no interest in advertising dollars? Durr. They get a bigger tv contract if the ad dollars are up. And if they claim to have more middle aged women than old men as fans, they can justify higher ad costs. They don't calculate commercial rates just by how many viewers they have, they do it by demographics, and if I recall correctly, middle aged women (wives) and young men are the most valuable demos.

The NFL mobile commercial is a perfect example of that (well, not your last paragraph, but that's because the Fark progmins won't let us cut it down in the mobile site- get on that, yo). Lonely girl with mom glasses, oversized sweatshirt, and attentive cat turns into fashionable fanatic with attractive guy friends that gets pies with Drew Brees. Things like "10 ways to look sexy with new NFL gear" in Cosmo are the next step. I don't know if it's an easy sell, necessarily, but you're right in that it's a pretty big and untapped market.

I have a great idea. Tell women that sports are reality shows that can't be scripted (except the NBA). The drama! The intensity! The intrigue! Also, more human interest stories. We like stories. And tight pants. Maybe some more shirt-taking-offs like at the end of soccer games. They really should hire me as a consultant.

Marketing.  Market share.  Expanding fan base.

The NFL has almost all the males in the USA locked in as fans.  The ones who aren't fans never will be.  How will the NFL Inc. expand their fans?  Reach out to women.

The NFL has been doing this for a few years.  Alyssa Milano-designed NFL logo wear.  Sanitizing the game (really, big they care about players' insensitive tweets?).  Rule changes to make the game more exciting, higher scoring, and protecting star-position players.  Faith Hill singing the Sunday Night Football theme.

It's all about enticing women to enjoy the games.  And if they get both sexes into football, children will follow.

Watch, next step is cleaning up the fans in the stadiums.  Right now, stands full of drunk and belligerent men scare away a lot of people.  Look for a shift toward family-friendly experiences if you go to a live game, and a de-emphasis on alcohol sales.

Yeah, and what about comparing it with the bookend commercial where loser corporate drone Saints fan becomes a popular insider and is ultimately intimidated in an airport by Clay Matthews? The implicit message is the NFL is universal, knowing better may confer, ultimately limited, social advantages. (Which can even be true)

I don't really see how 44% would be a shock. The male fans I know are more into the game and overall probably know more about the game, but I know plenty of females who if you bring up football will call themselves a fan of a team at least. They may not be able to name off the top of their head what the penalty for kicking a kickoff out of bounds is, but plenty of guys I know who are fans of the game don't know that either.

Maybe 44% is a little high but 30 to 40 percent seems plausible, especially since women are a larger percentage of the population.

I love football. I flew home for 48 hours just to go to a game. I can tell you who's looking good, and who I think they should cut. But I have yet to date a guy who gave a shiat about football. And when I have company to watch the games on Sundays, they are always female. In my little corner of the world a good 75% of football fans are female. And true fans, not this BS attention whore fan. Female fans exist, just like guys who couldn't care less exist.

lordjupiter: bborchar: Can we at least stop with the patronizing commercials about women and football? Not every female is stupid when it comes to the rules of the game. I can't think of any faster way to lose the fan base you want to acquire than to continually insult their intelligence every commercial break.

/why yes, I AM a female football fan
//all of my teams sucked this year
///at least I was able to see peyton manning tear it up again

For every one of those commercials there are 20 where Dumbass Husband gets shown up by the Frugal Wife who's smart enough to use Product X, or some variation of that theme.

And is Product X a car, or a computer, or some other mechanical or electrical device? Or is it a cleaning product or kitchen utensil?
And then ask yourself, who runs the ad companies, men or women?

Champion of the Sun: FTA: And according to the most recent league stats, females make up 44 percent of the NFL's fan base

New York Jets brand tampon: Be careful, there's no second string here!

CruiserTwelve: Why do the Raiders still have fans?

It's the team for Bay Area/California people that don't like the Niners/Chargers.

elisande: I love football.

(checks profile for location)

St. Louis? That makes sense.

CSB: I used to travel back and forth to St. Louis for four-six days every month, and come winter I'd always be wearing my KC gear. If it was Chiefs or Royals, nobody gave me grief- there was an understanding that St. Louis is more of a baseball town, whereas Kansas City is far more invested in football. However, the one time I wore KU stuff I found out EXACTLY how beloved MU is. For as much of a well-deserved aw-shucks reputation as the two areas have, I've seen the KU-MU rivalry make people vandalize, break into cars, get into fights, hurl expletives at mothers, etc... it's sad to see it get torn apart by the conference realignment.

Di Atribe: Incorrigible Astronaut: I don't know if it's an easy sell, necessarily, but you're right in that it's a pretty big and untapped market.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: Preach it, mammajamma. THANK you!

No, thank YOU! ;)

Sports as reality shows sounds like when the nba tried to convince us to watch the wnba because it was just like basketball but without the athletic parts.

CruiserTwelve: Why do the Raiders still have fans?

Why is Halloween so popular? Why did people go to see "the rocky horror picture show" over and over again?
They get to dress up in strange outfits and show off to other people who also like to dress up and show off. It's a big party, win lose or draw.

Ask yourself, who do these advertisers perceive as having control over the household budget, or doing the most spending? Usually it's women. And that's who they typically cater to, unless it's a bro-mercial for some shiatty beer, a grunting neanderthal ad for a "heavy duty" truck, or razor blades.

Haha... there ARE some similarities between watching sports & some of the competitive "reality" shows. I'm not talking about the Kardashians or Real Housewives stuff. I meant more like Amazing Race or Survivor. However, I do see your point and it's a fairly good one.

Way late to the thread, but as a diehard football fan I hate watching football with my female friends. They don't know what's going on and talk about non-football stuff way too much. I've been coaching football for eight years and love, love, love the sport. Even though the Vikes break my heart year after year.

//I've even gotten into fist fights with dudes over football. In my defense the stupid packer fan wouldn't shut the fark up. I warned him I would punch him in the mouth if he kept talking. Alcohol might have been a factor.

Aar1012: aevorea: Apparently New England female fans are bucking the trend considering I'm the only female football fan of my 20+ female coworkers.

Tampa Bay isn't doing that well thIs season

Neither are the Browns. ;)

/Granted, the Browns are doing better than usual.
//Still, a step above utter crap is still ... crap.

LOVES the Raiders...
(Just now noticed that's exactly 9 years old today...THE day my daughter was born, as a matter of fact!!)

Holy crap, did Brian Peppers get a sex change???
