I want to see how far down the Hollywood/Bristol wormhole this Tebow argument can go. B-list ESPN analyst criticizes Tebow, B-list actor steps in to defend.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! When did Duhamel get upgraded to the B-list?

Agreed, I always thought he was on the D-(for Direct-to-DVD)list.

Hoge needs to chill out. Even though he's probably right about Tebow's abilities, he sounds like a douche bag. And I don't like anyone calling the only famous Christian who isn't a total hypocrite a phony.

This creates a conundrum:

Skip Bayless is an idiot and everything he says is wrong. He is a huge Tebow fan.
Merrill Hoge is an idiot and everything he says is wrong. He is a huge Tebow hater.

We can now rule out the notion that Tebow is great, and we can also rule out the notion that Tebow is terrible. Maybe we can approach the whole Tebow situation with a simple "well, whatever happens, happens" tack.

I won't speak as to whether or not he's a hypocrite, as I don't know him personally. I will point out that this is a lot like the Sherman situation: Neither Tebow nor Sherman have given me any cause to doubt their word at any point in their careers. The NFL, the Jets' organization, and ESPN's magnificent "sources," who always seem to be "unnamed" have lied to me, as a fan, over and over and over and over and over and over and over again and I really have no reason to believe anything they tell me.

That would be a good point if it didn't ignore everything about Tebow outside of his public proclamations. Lots of athletes thank god and have nine kids whose names they can't remember. Not a lot of athletes spend their time harvesting foreskins in underdeveloped countries.

And isn't there some command to spread the word or something? I don't know much about that shiat. Pretty sure there's at least a few Saints who were canonized for being 'hypocrites' while trying to convert people.

Duhamel being "right" about Tebow being 10x better is debatable: Hoge: eight years in the NFL averaging 3.8 yds/carry. Lots of value from a 10th-round draft pick. Tebow: first-round pick with a career passer rating of 75.3 and will be (ostensibly) shipped on to his third NFL team after the season.

But you forgot one thing. Tebow is a winner. He just wins. No one in the history of the NFL has been as much a winner. Except for when he loses

And Derphamell failed to answer the question if he thought the Broncos were better off without Tebow. Just admit that he's a great guy and a shiatty pro quarterback. No shame in that.

It's a stupid question though. Tebow isn't a bad QB because Peyton is better. Hoge created a strawman and said people thought Tebow was better for the Broncos than Manning was. Transformers guy didn't have to believe that to call out Hoge. And that wasn't even a ridiculous belief before the season. People had no idea how his neck would hold up or what his arm strength would be. If Peyton takes a hit this weekend and breaks his neck and has to retire? Then yeah, Tebow would be better for the Broncos. Even if Peyton is light years better at QB when healthy.

Its not a stupid question IMO. The Broncos have a hell of a team before looking at the QB. They got rid of a 'good' young player who managed to eek into wins despite having horiffic QB numbers for the most part in exchange for one of the all time greats. Then, Tebow showed how good he is by not being able to beat out a mediclocre Sanchez for a starting job. THEN, he was passed up in favor for the twams 3rd stringer. But, hey, the kid is a heck of a QB and not just a product of media hype because they wanted a new hero a season too soon.

I'm sure he's one of the nicest, friendliest people to play a high profile position in the NFL in quite a few years, but, that doesn't make him good.

No one except every doctor they shoved a microphone in front of. Maybe you should have listened to them a bit more when they said Peyton was at no greater risk of getting injured playing football than the next guy. It's not like he actually broke his neck and it was re-attached with a few screws.

Is Tom Brady one hit away from retirement because he missed a season?

Yes, as a matter of fact, they all are.

Hoge was asking people, fans not doctors, if they thought Tebow was better for Denver. I have my spine fused, and it's not the risk of re injury that affects you, it's the pain, and the decreased ability to take shocks to your spine. Have some titanium screws put in your vertebrae and you will feel every jolt deep in your spine. And if you weren't so busy be a dickhole, you would've seen where the doctors who he wasn't paying to perform surgery on him said it was an increased risk, and some that said that his fusion would make a routine injury worse than someone without a fusion.

Also, arm strength was a huge unknown which you didn't address. Peyton was throwing to high school friends in secret so the media wouldn't be able to see him throw. Simmons was calling him noodle arm for the first eight weeks of the season. So Hoge asserting that only stupid people would think Tebow was better long term than Peyton is in itself kinda stupid. Thanks for responding to only one portion of the conversation though.

And even now, with a tremendous season by Peyton and Tebow riding the bench, it's still a legitimate question to ask. Do you want a great 36 year old QB for a few seasons, or do you want a (however you describe his game) 25 year old QB who did win you a playoff game for the next ten seasons? And Tebow is a lot cheaper than Manning, and will sell jerseys and seats regardless of record. I'd pick Manning in a heartbeat, but Hoge saying that it's stupid to want Tebow is in itself stupid.

And I bet Tom Brady with his repaired knee would more readily consider retirement if his knee was re-injured as opposed to hurting his shoulder or something. (assuming he hasn't had a shoulder injury I'm unaware of) These guys gotta have some faith in their strength to keep playing. All things being equal, Peyton is more likely to retire from another neck injury than he would a knee assuming they had the same rehab time and chance of recovery.

This. I don't mean to pile on Tebow the person, but the opportunity costs of whiffing on a high draft pick matter.

I heard this "phony" comment Hodge made and it wasn't about Tebow's abilities, they were talking about Tebow allegedly refusing to be used in the wildcat. Hodge said that Tebow's "team first, I'll do whatever they want to help the team" is phony and he quit on his team.

No, it's not. Only a complete moron who a) Never actually watch Tim Tebow and b) Never actually listened to Manning's doctors, the Broncos doctors, the Titans doctors, the Niners doctors, would believe that Tim Tebow would be better long term than Peyton Manning.

You didn't mention the Colts' doctors. They seemed to walk away from their all-time franchise guy pretty quick.

The Jets watched Tebow and traded for him as well. Even though they're totally clownshoes, they probably know more than you or I about NFL personnel.

I laid out my reasons why it would be a reasonable position to want to pick Tebow over Manning. And I even said I would pick Manning in a heartbeat. You didn't refute those reasons, nor did you show how those few doctors you listed negated the opinions of other doctors who felt differently. You a dick

I imagine the Colts' doctors probably told them the same thing the other teams' doctors told them. As far as the surgery, there was no reason to believe he wouldn't be able to play again. Plenty of other NFL players have had it in the past and continued to play. The grey area that no one could predict was how well he would recover from the nerve damage that the procedure. His neck wouldn't be an issue, but there was no way to tell if he'd ever regain enough arm strength to play again. The Colts had to make a decision early, because he was due a $22 million payment (give or take a million) as part of his contract. They were coming off their worst season in more than a decade, and with the number 1 draft pick in a strong QB draft class they decided it was better to let him go and rebuild the whole team than gamble 20+ million. The other teams got to see him workout (something the Colts weren't able to do) and whatever they saw it was enough to convince them it was a risk worth taking.

As for Tebow, the Jets' GM traded for him. The Jets' coaches that watch him practice every week and decide who actually plays have largely kept him off the field despite the struggles of Sanchez. Now is it possible that the coaching staff has refused outright to start Tebow out of spite for having a QB (and a media distraction) that they didn't want thrust upon them? Sure, anything's possible. But it's just as likely, if not more so, that the coaches have seen him in practice and simply don't think he's good enough to start.

It's funny how people immediately start thinking that the Jets have competent talent evaluators and coaches on the offensive side of the ball when it comes time to criticize Tebow. Even if they don't think Tebow is better than the sh*t they keep running out there...who really thinks the Jets' management on any level is making any correct decisions?
