Alec Baldwin is a non-drinker? He has that bloated, puffy-faced look that is so common among raging alcoholics. Perhaps he's a recovering alcoholic?

This. That show keeps its random pop culture references in check enough that it's not annoying.

/Also, nobody on 30 Rock is as funny as Max.

According to an article I read a couple months ago, Baldwin says he's been sober for over 20 years.

His new fiancée has him on a vegan diet and makes him do yoga (she's an instructor), which is why he suddenly looks decades younger, tons lighter and less puffy.

The show has had some great episodes and great quotable lines. To no surprise, people expect every episode to be twice as funny as the one before it or the whole series is a FAIL!

It wouldn't be a Lemon party without old Dick.

That line alone gives them a place in the history books.

They dealt with it in a great way on 30 Rock

Aaron Sorkin: "Hi, I'm Aaron Sorkin, writer of "The Social Network" and "The West Wing"
Liz Lemon: "And Studio 60"

I had problems initially with the series, but the writing could be uniquely absurd. Jack Donaghy saying, "There are no bad ideas, only great ideas that go horribly wrong", made the whole season for me.

My son. You may not remember me. I am your father. This message is coming to you either from beyond the grave or because I am in the grip of insanity. The purpose of these DVDs is to educate and guide you through life in my absence. I will begin with our shared history. The Donaghys originally come from Ireland's little-known County Steve, where historically we were whiskey testers in goblins. I was raised in Sadchester, Massachusetts. I won the Avery Blaine Handsomeness scholarship to Princeton, and then attended Harvard Business School, where I was voted Most. I once hit a stand-up triple off Fidel Castro. I was the first person ever to say "I need a vacation from this vacation." The song "You're So Vain" was in fact written...by me.

I love that whole speech so much I want to go behind the middle school with it and get pregnant.

-I've seen a blind guy bite a police horse! A puppy committed suicide after he saw our bathroom! I once bit into a burrito and there was a child's shoe in it! I've seen a hooker eat a tire! A pack of wild dogs took over and successfully ran a Wendy's! The sewer people stole my skateboard! The projects I lived in were named after Zachary Taylor, generally considered to be one of the worst presidents of all time! I once saw a baby give another baby a tattoo! They were very drunk!

30 Rock has had some damn good punchlines and jokes when I've seen it (which really hasn't been much.) My only complaint really is the Tina Fey pretending to be unattractive and homely schtick she pulled in Mean Girls. She's really funny and a clever joke writer and really shouldn't have been resorting to the eighties standard glasses=invisible to men material.

I think what I like most about 30 Rock is like Seinfeld, the jokes come first and caring about the characters and all that other crap comes after. I don't want every show to be like that, but it's nice to see some absurd humor once in a while on a major network.

This is the way I was too. I heard good things about it and would watch a show or two and never really got into it over the years. Then I started from season one on Netflix last year and I was hooked. The show is packed subtle humor and running jokes. Brilliantly written while simultaneously being absurd.

The show moves so fast and has so many throw away lines, it is a show that demands full attention to be appreciated.

My favorite episodes were:
-Liz Lemon meeting Oprah.
-Liz Lemon starting a fight club
-Every episode with Elaine Stritch (and her death episode was both touching and funny).

30 Rock was a critical darling and had a niche audience, but it was never, ever, a hit. It was never in the top 10 for shows. Hell, it was never in the top 5 shows on the night it was on. It won awards and had support from high level execs, but it was never popular.

It receives accolades like it's far and away better than every other comedy out there, but I've never found it any funnier than Parks and Rec, Archer, Happy Endings, Children's Hospital, Don't Trust the B- in Apt. 23, Community, It's Always Sunny, Modern Family, or The League, to name a few. In fact, I stopped watching 30 Rock years ago and haven't missed it at all. Too many comedies to choose from that are just as good, or better.

moothemagiccow: Oh and while the storylines aren't funny, the tiny jokes they fit into the dialogue usually make me lol.

Surprise!!!

Tina Fey is simply not funny.

Uncle Pooky: It receives accolades like it's far and away better than every other comedy out there, but I've never found it any funnier than Parks and Rec, Archer, Happy Endings, Children's Hospital, Don't Trust the B- in Apt. 23, Community, It's Always Sunny, Modern Family, or The League, to name a few. In fact, I stopped watching 30 Rock years ago and haven't missed it at all. Too many comedies to choose from that are just as good, or better.

It's the way it's written.  It's Always Sunny and Archer make me laugh more than 30 Rock, but 30 Rock is more intelligently constructed.

Bontesla: It was no Happy Endings. That show is so much better.

I wet myself during the lesbian Ellen dance.

of those I've seen, I find 30 Rock much more consistent* than pretty much all of those shows. I would put Community's first season ahead of 30 Rock, but the show's never been able to reach the same consistency for its past 2 seasons, even if it has some great episodes still. I like Parks and Rec, but it's always felt like the plot is completely secondary to the jokes. I think Children's Hospital is really good, though its meta episodes can be hit or miss. Even though I like the show, I've never understood the hype surrounding Modern Family. I find all the adult characters funny, but i generally dislike any plots involving the kids; they are generally comedy death and/or bad actors. I really don't get the "Don't Trust the B" fanbase; it's really not that good of a show.

* though last season was really hit or miss, but this season has been much better.

Glad to see that the general Farkogeist is that Happy Endings is currently the sharpest comedy on TV.

mjbok: 30 Rock was a critical darling and had a niche audience, but it was never, ever, a hit. It was never in the top 10 for shows. Hell, it was never in the top 5 shows on the night it was on. It won awards and had support from high level execs, but it was never popular.

//Popularity and quality rarely are the same thing.

Well that's something of a lie. Look at the torrents to prove it. It's one of the few US comedies since Friends that is widely watched outside the US..

It was a show for retards who thought they were smart. It's for the people who thought Inception was an intellectual thriller, and According to Jim was funny.

The trade offs between will arnett and Baldwin were priceless. When Tracy yells at jack "YOU IDIOT!" And my favorite line from Jack, "its a guaranteed disaster, like eating a burrito before sex" are all some of my faves.

30R, Parks and the League make for a formittable Thursday night line up. Why do we need football on Thursday's again?

Hmm. I did think I was smart, but I found Inception to be extremely overrated. However, I've seen a few episodes of According to Jim, and I'm fairly certain I laughed at least once. It was a plot about going to a Bears' game or something, can't remember now.

She's good in Dale And Tucker Vs. Evil, BTW, a movie I keep pushing on horror fans who'll get the jokes.

"For example, in Germany the dubbed series premiered on a new network, ZDFNeo to a 0.0 Rating- meaning less than 5000 people tuned in. Perhaps the dry humor of Tina Fey & Alec Baldwin doesn't appeal to mass audiences. Or maybe it had something to do with the fact that a lot of the writing centers on the references to obscure American pop-culture. Either way, it looks like it wasn't the best choice for ZDFNeo to use as their flagship in their re-launch at the time (2009). The series no longer airs in Germany for obvious reasons."

Don't know about torrents, but though I could find info about it airing in like 30 countries, I could not find anything saying it was well received or watched with any significant volume.

Parachute Test Platoon: Alfie: I was a Tuskegee Airman!

Abner: Zippity doo doo

Abner: Banjo!

Alfie(wielding chair): I'LL KILL YOU!

Still my favorite episode. One of my favorite episodes of ANYTHING on TV. It was like the best of 30 Rock blended with the best of Saturday Night Live.

I am of the "Good Riddance" crowd. I gave it a chance..It was not funny..It was a collection of
"Isn't this awkward?" and "isn't "awkward" funny?" moments. No, they are not..
