Just doing some quick Wikipedia work because I'm not up on this series, but Peter Parker was killed off in the Ultimate storyline, and Miles Morales took over for him there.

Yup. We'll get a few issues of "I'M Doc Ock and now I have to be Spider-Man", when suddenly Peter's conciousness starts to seep back in, and then we get Doc Ock and Peter fighting for control of the brain/body, and eventually, Peter wins, Doc Ock dies/gets a new body.

I know this is super-nerdy, but it still bugs me that they used the first dozen or so issues of FF as both themselves, and 12 issues of Fantastic Four (numbering-wise).

Of course, Marvel NOW means they've killed that numbering all together.

Ultimates is about as canonical as your average fanfic, it really doesn't count.

Why do people read these comics? Why would someone keep reading these comics and subject themselves to this hamfisted crap over and over again?

I guess im the only one who thinks its really interesting. I kinda like Doc Ocks better then thou snobbery dialog plus Peters sense of humor in the new Spiderman. Its also interesting that Marvel has gone out of its way to make sure that artists don't use the expressive eyes trick on the costume by redesigning the eyes.

Im looking forward to see where it goes. Marvel has been really good on most of all its books while NuDC just sucks. ( Some exceptions like Earth-2, Animal man, Batbooks but the rest are awful. )

I was never into comics but I remember people making a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE deal about the 'Death of Superman' comics. People (or at least the stupid kids I hung out with) really thought it was the end of Superman comics. I knew a bunch of people who bought 2+ copies because, obviously, that comic was going to be worth a fortune.

Of course, it was non-sense. So long as they can squeeze another dollar out; Superman will live. I think they stopped the comic for two months then launched EVEN MORE Superman comics and, of course, Superman was fine.

At this point, I don't see why anyone would care. Kill Spiderman? Wait a few weeks, he's fine. Oh and 'leaking' the story in advance....yay, that was absolutely not on purpose. Totally.

That's probably scary close to how this plays out.

And it's entirely predictable so anyone praising this as being something "new" or "creative" can go eat a pile of Sabretooth poo.

Face it, this year long 'storyline' is at best worth one throwaway episode. Hell, this gimmick was done numerous times on Smallville and they never made it into a two-parter, always resolved it within an hour.

I actually think a villain ending up in a hero's body permanently could be an interesting concept, though I might create a hero character specifically for someone like Doc Ock to displace instead of wrecking a character/adding more kitsch to his already super-kitschy history that a lot of people are emotionally invested in. Just read up on how Psylocke was handled and try not to make the same mistakes.

Back in 1992, when a major comic character died, they usually stayed dead for a significant period of time. Barry Allen stayed dead (until recently), Jason Todd stayed dead (until recently), Bucky stayed dead (until recently), not counting clones, Gwen Stacey stayed dead, Uncle Ben stayed dead. Really, the only major character to break with this prior to 1993 was Jean Grey and she still stayed dead for six years. Then there was the absolute silence from DC for three months.

The Death of Superman kicked off the craze of killing major characters and bringing them back as gimmicks. Prior to that, people had every reason to believe that was the last we would see of Superman for a couple of years, at least. We didn't have the internet to fuel rumors and provide easy access to spoilers. Keeping a publishing secret was possible in 1992 without the internet.

I have no way to end this, so, instead, I'll just take a small bow.

I think I have that issue

Issue #700 has become a perfect "jumping off" point for me for the series. Which, I think, should not be the intention of the publishers and writers. Not to be overtly contrarian here - but I haven't been particularly fond of Dan Slott's writing, or of the "event focus" nature of ASM for the last couple of years (or the dropped plot threads that seemingly go nowhere...) and I'm certainly not interested in reading a book where Dr. Octopus is pretending to be Peter Parker/Spiderman.

Yes, I realize, it's all a big put on and probably even providing Marvel with a way to undo the "One More Day" storyline. Still, why would anyone pick this issue up? Or to be more succinct - why would anyone pick up the next years worth of issues? If you're a new reader who probably knows the movies/television, then this storyline will make no sense and probably alienate you. If you're an existing reader, why continue with the book when the character that is the main character has essentially been replaced?

That's why I said this issue is a natural "jumping off" point. It's a good time to put down ASM from the perspective of a long time reader. However, I'm not so certain that this is also a good time for a new reader to pick up the book.

So... all around stupid on Marvel's part if you ask me.
