I was watching him do the port attack with Little Snitch, so it wasn't just about single user mode. After 20 years of doing computer setup and support, it just kills me when people claim they can own a computer, particularly a Mac, after 30 seconds. Seriously, it bothers me because how many other people besides the users on Fark he's telling it to and that believe it? We need more informed users, not people buying into FUD. Confusion-->fear-->anger-->hate. I don't want to deal with fearful, angry, hateful users anymore.

Shakin_Haitian:

They use the same hardware as everyone else.

True, but they don't put it together the same way. I can't speak much for the other Apple computers, and hey, my iPod is great, even after all these years, but for me, the iMac was a terrible investment. It's crammed into as tiny a space as they can get all that hardware, with poor ventilation and miserable thermal control, and no end-user ability to repair or troubleshoot the machine. Mine always ran hot enough to fry eggs on, even with as much extra fans I ran behind the machine to move the heat up and out, and the component temperatures (monitored by software) were always at the peak of or even exceeding the operating limits for those components. Granted, it had some powerful specs when I bought it, but they had no business cramming that much power into an enclosure that small, with fans that wouldn't turn on until the room was about to catch fire. It died within three years of purchase date due to a failed motherboard, and at $3600 original investment, is little more than a paperweight that will cost at least $800 plus labor to repair. I don't think I'll bother.

I've built and used Windows machines for many years, and I'll be the first to admit that the platform has a host of its own problems, mostly in the software and internal compatibility area, but at least I can work on them myself. The hard drive breaks, well, I can replace that this afternoon. Same with virtually any other component. And if the motherboard burns up, that's not going to cost $800 plus indeterminate labor charges and someone else's repair time, and at worst I can salvage and reuse the rest of the components. My Windows machine with better specs than that iMac 27" runs at barely above room temp, costs over $1000 less, and cranks along just fine. Sure, it has noisy fans, and it doesn't look as cool, but white noise doesn't bother me, and looks are superficial.

The iMac was sort of a whim, because I wanted to see what the fuss was about, and I'm always game to try new things. But I found that for one of my particular hobbies (3D graphics), most third-party software never even made it to the Mac platform, and even the mainstream stuff that did was usually a generation behind the WIndows versions in terms of maturity. For my other hobby (astrophotography), well, the situation was pretty similar. Telescope control software is a bit behind. Catching up, but still behind. I could have bought a lot of telescope for $3600.

The iMac was an expensive, failed, overheated experiment. I don't think I'm likely to head down that road again, regardless of how popular they are. The hot female Mac user, well, she can keep them.

The video focused alot on office uses however, most PC women I know are hard core gamers and their PCs are pretty serious machines. Apple is very good at selling marketing a certain Lifestyle---your not just anyone, your an APPLE user, which quite frankly is brilliant. Their products do exactly what they are marketed to do. But for many who want their computer to do other tasks, Apple is pretty useless.

You're running 5 VMs on a dual-core mobile i5? I presume they're all sitting idle--and that you don't plan to do any gaming or graphics work with that integrated Intel mobile graphics.

You can build or buy an i7 desktop for the $900 that i5 Mini cost you--and you can direct-attach your 8.5TB to the internal SATA instead of having to buy a matching external enclosure for the Mini.

A Star Trek fan.

Actually, based on informal research, I conclude that Apple is the choice of women and gay men, neither of whom wish learning how to work a computer to cut into time better spent being fabulous.

Odds are that in the home of a female Apple user, you'll find one of those pink-handled "girl" home toolkits. It will still be in its plastic wrap, in the back of the closet.

In related news, math remains hard.

Yeah, pretty much. I just have a couple running at any given time. The machine itself is a recent acquisition with the purpose of serving simple Web sites and databases, and as a file server for my very large collection of iso'ed DVDs. Basically I thought the $600 (not $900) was money well spent on a nice, stable appliance. FYI, some of the drives are USB 3 and I wanted to see how they'd perform. So far I've had no problems with it other than wrangling the DNS settings on Mountain Lion Server.

I work in a mom and pop IT store. I repair and sell laptops of the windows variety. A previous employee of ours runs the mac shop in our town. From our conversations this is what I have gathered about end users.

Most pc users that are female are in their mid-thirtys soccer moms getting their computer fixed for a family member. A number of them game, but with WoW becoming so huge the age range we get that plays is from 8yo to 80yo, so gaming is not as good a metric anymore. Also, I don't count farmville or whatever facebook tripe is out right now as gaming.

The mac users tend to be either in their 20s or their 80s. We rarely get middle aged women in the shop with macs. I do know this, Mac users are the most brutally self centered asshats ever. The expect shiat to be done today and cheap. I will take 50 biatchy soccer moms over one overly aggresive mac users. Also Mac gamers are like bigfoot, everyone has seen one but always blurry and out of the corner of your eye. Mac, the non-gaming platform.

The difference is the PC crowd buys their computers to do a job. Like you buy a lawn mower or a gaming console.
The Mac crowd buys an iProduct to wear as an accessory for their current lifestyle. Flash before substance.

Every mac I have rolled out since the intel cores started coming in them has been boot camped with windows. The customer has to pay us to do this. So even Mac users need windows to run the programs they want/need. Doing this or having multiple virtual machines that run windows is like saying you don't watch t.v. but have a huluplus membership.

I get so sick of this religious argument. I use Apple products. They "just work". I have worked in IT since 1994, and used to be the type that had a tower PC that never had the sides on it, always swapping parts. At one point I decided no longer wanted to do at home what I did for a living. That and Mrs. Fool didn't like Linux/Gnome (circa 2000) and I got an iMac. I was sold. Then when OSX came out, they got it. Apple got what a UI should be like. I still have to use Windows at work, but I have grown to hate the UI since Windows 2000.

I don't game, so that isn't a problem for me. I can use the Mac for whatever I need. And there is that neat unix-type base that the OS is written on. MS products are trying to take that away. I admit that I am afraid that Apple will turn all their products in to a iOS based system in the future. Don't take away my terminal!

Because a mid-range Mac is (for the most part) fairly hassle-free and looks pretty sitting on a desk. It also has a nice UNIX-based OS. IMO, they also have some of the best mid-range notebooks on the market. The problem is that it comes at a premium. The two grand I blew on my five-year-old Macbook was money well spent in my book as I've had few problems and after all these years it's still kicking like a mule.

However, if you want to either go to the low end of the market or the high end, PCs are where it's at. You can get or build a tiny "email and web" system for dirt-cheap or you can build a behemoth monster of a gaming rig for under $2000. Windows 7 is a decent OS (and for commercial software, the only game in town), though it's no OS X and Linux is pretty good and free but comes with plenty of baggage.
