Male designers are misogynists. A cursory glance at women's so-called "footwear" (aka medieval torcher devices) will tell you that.

TSA is missing out on an opportunity here. Each time you go through the porno-scanner at the airport, you should be able to get a copy of your body measurements. Upload them to your favorite online store and you have an up to date fit.

Or you could just use the Kinect, though I'm not sure it has the resolution to actually get good enough measurements.

As a guy I'm pretty easy to fit. Just give me a 2XLT shirt and 48x32 Levi 560's and I'm set.

The problem then becomes FINDING those items. I hate 3XL, fits like a farking tent. And no one keeps the actual 560's in stock for some reason. No, I don't want these 559's and their variegated denim.

I haven't worn business casual in a while but I know dress shirts use real sizes. And that's where women's sizing falls apart. Something in the psychology where you can't say what the actual dimensions of the person are. And then you get a sizing war to where brands grow to accommodate larger women who still want to be the same size they were in college. Bite the bullet and use real numbers.

And, in any case, a 'loose' 42 that is really 42-44 is certainly better than a "8" or a "10" or a "14"- what do those even mean? They aren't inches, or cubits- they're just arbitrary numbers.

I have a 34" waist and wear size 31 Slim Cut Levis. Every brand I've tried on in a store has had differing amounts of vanity sizing, but I don't think I've ever found a pair with none. Levi was actually one of the closer to true brands, with only a few inches of slack.

If all sizes were consistent then 90% of women wouldn't find clothing that fits.

In the UK most women have a 2" drop (x/x-10/x+2), their hips are bigger than their bust. In Mediterranean countries the hour glass (x/x-10"/x) is more common. Asian women tend to a more rectangular figures.

Different suppliers chose to fit their clothes to the woman that they are marketing at.

Men don't get a free pass either, just because the leg/waist measurements are the same does not mean the trousers are cut the same.

Men's trousers can be all over the place too, and they're supposed to be a system based on actual real-world measuring units (and that's ignoring the common practice of vanity sizing that happens to men too).

They whole system is daft anyway, because very few styles of mens trousers in 2012 are worn on the waist, but closer to the hips. You're not a 36 inch waist, you have 36 inch hips, and a 48inch waist, you fat slob.

For pants depending on brand what side of the ten pound bubble I'm on when I buy them I'm a 36 -38 waist and 30 - 32 length. 38's tend to be too loose and 36's are a little tight while the 30in length are a little too short and the 32's are a little too long. They don't make 37 ' 31's though so I'm farked. And yeah I sound fat.

I went through a period of buying clothes from a company that sells clothes to the Plain Folk: Amish and whatnot. Now these clothes were not vanity sized, which led to some little consternation at first. Until I actually measured myself.

Vanity sizing has become a real problem. I was about a size 4 when I was 20. 15 years later, even though my weight,height and body measurements have not changed, I'm now fitting in size 0's or even 00's. I'm starting to wonder if I will soon be a size 000 or -2 if this continues.

But I can see why clothing manufactures do it. I work in the bridal/special occasion industry. We have women who will come in and say "I'm a size 12". Then when everything marked size 12 is to small, they will LEAVE saying "Nothing fits me here.", rather than trying on dresses in a larger size that would actually fit them. The bridal industry does not vanity size. Their sizing is more consistent with what sizes were 20 years ago. Don't get me started on Missy vs Women sizing either. A 16 Womens size can be several inches larger than a 16 Missy size. And often it's just the brand that decides if thier sizing will be a Missy cut or Womens cut. This can really decieve women as to their actual size.

The only clothes I've ever gotten that were the same measurements as indicated were from a tailor. Off the rack varies from 3-8 inches larger than advertised.

Vanity sizing in menswear is easier to spot.

Regular fit should be pretty close to spot on, relaxed is +1-2", and loose is 2+".

Also, the smaller your waist and the more traditional cut (sits at the waist, not the hips), the more true the size will be.

Go measure the waist of a pair of sub-34" 517's or 501's and you'll get nearly spot on measurements.

I have absolutely no clue what size I am because I could grab 5 different brands and they would all be different sizes. It's made me hate shopping so much that I practically wear my jeans until they fall apart.

But your tailor does. Take the 38 x 32 pants and ten bucks to your tailor and they'll magically turn into a 37 x 31 pair.

Since the early 1990's, I did the majority of my shopping through Land's End. Measure myself, pick what I want, viola it arrives, and rarely did I ever have to send anything back. Since they were bought up by Sears, I can go to an actual store and try it on. Quality has slipped somewhat, but overall, I'm still pretty loyal.

Well, a situation developed that I needed a less classic look, like 5 minutes ago, so I head to a mall to look for something. Amazingly, I ended up purchasing an outfit that was 4 sizes smaller on the bottom and 2 sizes smaller on top, than what I normally wear. I made the demonstration, landed the deal, and went back to wearing my usual, un-trendy style. The new outfit lasted through 2 cleanings, and started fading, losing stitches, etc.

I was the same size in the 90's as I am today, and I was wearing probably a size 8.

Today, I wear a size 2-4 in pretty much all major stores.

My boyfriend gave me a sizing chart for a present he was going to get me, and it must have been from the 1920's, because my 36-27-36 was a size 14. Geez.

I mean, its a great ego boost to know I can wear a small size now, but its really deflating to see over the course of the last century, I am "heavy." ... and I still get that reminder any time I try on a high-end designer dress - they seem to be the only people out there trying not to scale up sizes for our growing waistlines. I do look forward to the day when I am also a 000. :)
