Having lived in that town, and having gone to high school fifteen miles from there twenty years ago where a very similar incident happened, involving a noose tossed at some black kids who were visiting some friends at our school, I can say that what the boy did was out of pure ignorance.

I would bet that the kid, his family and most of the other students there had NEVER gone to school with a black kid before, and probably 90% of the same had never been around black people ever in any setting.

Flashback twenty years ago and the punishment meted out was the same. One week suspension. I thought it was light then, but looking back, the fact is, it was a dumbass kid who committed the offense. He's still a dumbass 20 years hence, but has not committed any hate crimes beyond being a dumbass in high school.

I hope some of this anecdote helps understand the situation. Careful condemning the parents, kids, teachers and administrators here. Most are too ignorant from being raised in a very sheltered environment.

Because black kids cant be racist. That's just 'aw shucks give em a chance'.

It's bothers me that no one mentions all the revenge beating in the name of trayvon and just skips to the whites kids deserved it. Black people have done worn out the race cards. Everyone knows it but them.

The KKK symbol was a Klan hat that the boy made in art class, where he made the noose as well. He donned the hat, walked over to the black girl and placed the noose on her desk. The teacher says she saw none of this. How do you supervise a classroom and not notice a student walking around wearing a KKK hat? Couple of problems with what the principal said--"he gave the small noose to a black classmate"--first of all, the work gave to me infers a gift--this was certainly not a gift. Second, does the size of the noose matter?? The principal had no intention of disciplining the boy (who's 15 and a sophomore) until the phone calls to him began--he then went from in school suspension to out of school suspension, but won't disclose for how many days. The girl is in the state foster program, and to say that the foster mother is an attention whore is just ignorant. She's protecting her child, but it's also in the hands of the state foster care system. To clarify, there are 3 other black students in the school, so the white kids their have had past exposure to other races. The school has dropped the ball when dealing with racist acts and intolerance of racism and bullying. Someone mentioned earlier that there was no Hmong population in Baldwin--there was at one point. I believe 2-3 years ago there was a Hmong family in the area and the son was beaten up by a group of white students. Don't remember what happend with that situation. FYI--the black student is my foster granddaughter, so I know first hand what has happened and how devastating this incident has been for our entire family. There are other children in the home who have been affected by the hatred and racism. It's sad that neither the boy or his parents have made any effort to contact the foster parents about the incident--no apology for an act of ignorance, no expression of remorse.

Try growing up white in an all black neighborhood. You don't hear about the shiat they do. Stealing right out of your hands. Calling white kids honky and cracker, and Puerto Rican kids spics. Beating up anyone, anytime, including teachers. Having to have armed guards at the high school because they can't act civilized.

But no, you just keep thinking whitey is the only one that can be racist.

Funny thing about this...

I had a hunch that maybe this town (Baldwin) had been a "sundown town" at some point, so I searched the sundown town database. While Baldwin wasn't mentioned, it didn't surprise me that much to see that it was completely surrounded by probable sundown towns.

New Richmond (just north-west of Baldwin): Possible Sundown Town based on historical census data

River Falls (just south-west of Baldwin): Possible Sundown Town based on historical census data

Menomonie (just east of Baldwin): Possible Sundown Town based on historical census data

Hudson (just west of Baldwin): Possible Sundown Town based on historical census data

Barron (just north-east of Baldwin): Possible Sundown Town based on historical census data

Eau Claire (just east of Baldwin): Possible Sundown Town based on historical census data and documented racial exclusion/mistreatment of Black baseball players on a local team

So very interesting to me.

Dear Jerk: I'm as upset as you are, but surely expulsion is not the answer. Kids get knowledge before they get wisdom. Shame them with some suspension. If they're expelled permanently, they'll most likely keep their views.

Most likely staying in high school with blacks will only confirm his stereotypes.

The most tolerant people are in white suburbs far away from "urban" culture.

2) I have never been around nazi prison camp survivors, but I know not to make jokes about how the nazi's were trying to save the planet. Never been around??? what kind of dumbass excuse is that??

seriously, I grew up in the most racist neighborhood in chicago during the farking 68 riots. I didnt have to learn how to talk to blacks or mexicans, I just talked like my parents did to everyone. as equals.

The fact that she made a federal case out of it also screams attention whore.

The KKK killed government officials, blacks associated with the newly forming governments, terrorized, murdered and burned down the buildings associated with Republicans.

But remember, he's a kid. A stupid one. Expel him and you've basically given him a black mark for life. At the age of 13-14. You shouldn't be getting permanent consequences at that age unless if what you did caused permanent consequences to someone else.

Ok, maybe death threat is too strong (although you could argue that the noose qualifies). At the very least, the kid needs some serious counseling to learn that this behavior is not acceptable, ever.

Most states require an explicit threat for an action to ride to a criminal level. For instance, him making an actual noose and saying "I'm going to hang you with this," would be criminal. Making a noose and showing it to somebody, no.

The school suspended the boy and contacted the police. If the police don't feel this rises to the criminal level, I fail to see what else the school should do.

clowncar on fire: Polyhazard: clowncar on fire: bulldg4life: The young man said it was done as a joke.

Hilarious.

My wife's how do you do to African Americans was two girls who- for no particular reason-- began verbally assaulting her in the women's clothing section of Walmart. Not sure whether it was because she was asian or dressed particularly nicely that day, but there was no reason for that behavior. They started getting a bit too close until I came up from behind them and barked, "Back off!" at the top of my lungs (works good on strays, bullies).

She also works with other ethnic groups at a long term care center and and has had problems when threatened by same said group after she had to locate the late night kitchen staff- outside smoking-- to request that they properly stock the nutritional drinks and prepare evening snacks for the patient. She claims she was call some pretty bad names and threatened if she told her supervisors about them not being in the facility during work hours or failing to provide the late nigt snacks. Had her car keyed shortly after.

Needless to say, due to some pretty negative expiriences, she's a little leary of them. To her credit, our kids have several friends of various ethnicities and all are welcome in our home.

Nothing personal, but both you and your wife seem like very stupid-- if well-meaning-- people.

OK- I'll feed the troll. How does my wife being bullied while shopping in a Walmart, or trying to do her job make her, or myself, stupid?

Your wife sounds stupid because she has had a couple of negative experiences with specific black people (who she encountered for the very first time as a grown-ass woman, apparently,) and is now "leery" of "them" as a group. You sound stupid because you believe her leeriness is "needless to say" in this situation (to which those of us who do not categorically fear racial groups after a run-in with two people can attest.)

I'm sorry she was bullied by strangers, but I have to question the reasoning of anyone who extrapolates from that experience and lives their life in suspicion of people with a particular skin color.

Has anyone brought up the possibility that this girl was an obnoxious, pain in the ass who just happened to be black? I don't know her personally, but I have met kids who were perpetually "bullied" for the fact that they couldn't say anything without getting on someone's nerves.

When kids bully- they go for the low hanging fruit. Calling this girl a slut when she doesn't date or a fattie if she were thin doesn't have the desired effect one would want. Doen't say whether she was tagged with the big "N" word very often so maybe they were smart enough to know you never call a black person the "N" word. Not very bright using racially charged symbology but appeared to get the desired effect- basically getting under the victims skin.
