Just because the article used a horrible allegory for the title is no reason to post it on fark. Especially since its a whiny self serving opinion piece.

I thought the goal was to keep making more powerful drugs to 'treat' addiction and then later sell them on the street.

The drug ibogaine from the Nigerian iboga plant is known to cure heroin addiction with a single dose 40% of the time.

However it is illegal in the USA.

Suspicious?

Most methadone clinics are cash based and as such there is no oversight. No government or insurance paperwork or audits. Locally, if you want to decrease your dose you must pay for the entire month. Normally you pay weekly. This makes it very hard to quit the methadone. Also with no insurance paying this is a cash business. So if a person wants to quit they often turn to heroin. It has a much lower street value than methadone. Suboxone is much the same and it's street value is rising. I find it turning up on more and more drug screens. These patients will also go to doctors seeking opioid medications, the methadone clinics are so secretive they know Doctors have no way to find out if they are seen there. So from a practical medical point of view a Methadone clinic is just another kind of pusher. But you can probably trust the heroin pusher more.

That's because Methadone isn't meant to be a treatment.  Opioid addiction can be cured quite easily, and for much less expense.  Quick and simple cures have been around since at least the '90s (although the one I remember seeing required keeping them under anesthesia for an extended amount of time).  Methadone is just a way to squeeze the strung-out junkies for just a bit more revenue before they finally kick the bucket (or relapse).

Or there's always the painful method.  Doctors got me hooked on morphine when I was 11, due to their pain-management method for encephalitis.  Once it was clear I was no longer in danger from the infection, they cut me off cold turkey.  What a wonderful week that was.

Methadone is harder to kick than heroin.

However this metaphor was not apt for TFA.

I had a friend from high school that started on methadone and went on to other opiates and still hasn't kicked it, it's sad he was a good guy with a promising life ahead of him, and well now he's just a junkie really, even if he is getting the methadone legally now.

It's not hopeless, it's frustrating that you can't actively help, but I have friends that have made it back.
