In news that only happens all the time, rich people can indulge their eccentricities. There are hut dwellers all over the world who would KILL to own that much livestock.

She's burning wood which makes her carbon footprint MUCH larger than a normal suburban home.

No. Burning wood is carbon neutral, as long as you replant the trees you burn. Burning fossil fuel releases carbon dioxide that wouldn't naturally wind up there. It's naturally released from decomposing dead trees.

Fifi Le Pew: Yeah, I don't get it either. It's not like she's saying everyone needs to live this way or they're going to hell or something. It's just an alternate lifestyle that is not inflicting itself on anyone.

If you watch the video, she seems kind of sweet, actually. And she really does seem totally contented. That's what probably has all of these miserable farks spewing all over the place... I mean, they spent all of their money on Apple products, and she didn't. It's like the damn things don't work or something.

Umm... no. Wood decomposes whether you burn it or not.

I don't have any issue with her. What's your issue with thinking I have an issue with her?

2012-12-29 12:23:12 PM

computerguyUT: randomjsa: Yes, people can and did live this way.

Except for the part where she's over 50 and completely healthy that is.

That would have absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that she lived the first 9/10 of her life in an upscale home, had vaccinations and good food and all that.. Yeah, cause she's lived in a hut for a year she's some kind of hero.
If everyone tried to do this, they cities would jail them all for vagrancy.

She's burning wood which makes her carbon footprint MUCH larger than a normal suburban home.

The Article is interesting but complete bullshiat.

She's been there 19 years, if you'd bothered to read the "bullshiat" article.

Google "Sylvan Hart," a true American treasure.

Trust an old fart, it is worth your time.

The article is deceptive. The Brithdir Mawr community has solar panels, computers and trash pick-ups. They use gas and run businesses.

The Fark comments are venomous. Why do so many care if others want to combine the best of old and new and live simply? I'd enjoy having them as neighbors.

Bungles: I suspect her hut isn't quite as romantically primitive as the article would like to pretend, given her last hut had solar panels

FTA: The eco-community endured a decade of inquiries, court cases and a planning hearing before their fight, backed by more modern support for green issues, finally ended in victory in 2008 when the roundhouses were given planning approval.

But by then Mr and Mrs Orbach had divorced and the commune split into three entities, including hers. Each community is independent and they co-exist as neighbours in a more traditional style.

Explaining why she set up her own home just before 2000, Mrs Orbach said she felt a 'very strong pull to live life even more simply'.

I read that meaning she just didn't want to wash her downstairs any more, so abandoned the complexities of a husband and vaginal soap.

People do funny things when they break up. When my last ex and I split, I shaved my head. Don't really know why... some kind of "fresh start" thing, I guess.
Looks like this woman gave up electricity along with her husband. I don't see any reason to disbelieve the claims made in the article.

spentshells: MadAzza: I am bothered by her withdrawal from intimacy with other humans, though. T

I meant f*cking.

It sounds like a pretty cool little community, though.

HindiDiscoMonster: MadAzza: Nogale: MadAzza: ThrobblefootSpectre: Meh. A hero is someone who uses their education or talents to contribute to society, not retreat from it for self-absorbed reasons. I don't fault her for her lifestyle choices, but neither do I think she is, in any way imaginable, a hero.

Yeah, pretty much this. A lot of people are going to make fun of her appearance (particularly those giant moles/tumors/whatever they are on her face, which probably need medical attention), but that stuff isn't important to her.

I am bothered by her withdrawal from intimacy with other humans, though. That can be fine, plenty of people choose to go solo, but sometimes that choice indicates fear of intimacy due to underlying mental illness, or prior sexual or physical abuse.

She was married, had three kids (who still visit her), and was a founding member of an eco-community. I think she's OK with her fellow humans.

Yeah, probably. Except that she left them.

reading isn't your strong point is it?

Civility isn't yours, is it?

I wasn't referring to her kids, specifically. I was referring to society in general, friends, other family, and so forth.

I was thinking she was alone out there. I missed the part about her living in a community, as someone else referenced, because I usually can't get through an entire Daily Mail article. If you can, then yes, your "reading power" is stronger than mine.

She should live however she wants to live. I'm not making fun of her. I think it sounds nice ... to a point. Not for me, but that lifestyle works for a lot of people, which is great. Perhaps the rest of us can learn something from them.

It's not unusual at all for post-menopausal women to not want sex. Some have libidos that explode after the menopause, but some just have their cock-lust shrivel up.

cryinoutloud: Gawdzila: Well, she certainly fits the stereotype.
I'm glad she's having a good time and all, but frankly that sounds like a terribly unfulfilling existence to me.
Yay, repetitive manual labor every day.

I like doing manual labor. It is one of the most simple and fulfilling things you can do

For you maybe.
I like doing things with my hands, but I don't like manual labor. It's labor when it is required to survive.

cryinoutloud: doing things with your own hands, where you can see exactly how much you've done, and what the results are.

I can do that with my brain as well.

cryinoutloud: It's a hell of a lot more satisfying than sitting in front of a computer all day, or dealing with other people.

I suppose this might sound like a great idea if you're a misanthrope. I happen to like the company of other human beings. Besides, working the land isn't an objectively better or more fulfilling proposition unless that's the sort of thing you like to do. So NO, it ISN'T more satisfying for a lot of people, just to you and people who already agree with you.

cryinoutloud: how many of you wish you had time to work in a garden, or re-do that old car, or build something for yourself? But you don't have time, because of your totally fulfilling job where you earn a lot of money, but get little else from it. Also, enjoy being fat.

Lots of people have jobs that they love, and even without living in the woods I help tend a medium-large garden, do artwork / woodcarving, I keep bees, and am getting started with home-brewing. The best part is, I can do it when I want to instead of having to break my back every day lest I go hungry. And being fat (which I'm not) has to do with being a lazy ass, not what sort of job you do. Plus I won't get arthritis from having to do that stuff every day; my friend's dad was a contractor and his joints are wrecked.

So hey, if you find it fulfilling to dig and plow and saw and chop to survive you go right ahead, but don't pretend like it's the only way to get your fill of manual labor. As with many things, working with your hands is much more enjoyable when you can do it because you want to, not because you have to.

What a bunch of malarkey. She's paying property taxes so she obviously has income from somewhere. The article also stated that she "left" society. She may have a ton of cash saved somewhere for emergencies and/or she may sell eggs or some veggies. Speaking as a farmer, I still pay a ton in federal, state, and local taxes. I also have to report my income to the IRS. Just because she lives simply does not mean shes living off the taxpayer.

If people really want to live off the grid morepower to them as long a they don't come back each time they need something from the grid

The whole point of a free society is that people have the right to choose. If she goes to the city to pick up goods--with money she's earned--what difference does it make?

Really . How much do you think she is paying taxes for the government services she is using when she goes to town, be it roads, sidewalks or the NHS? Her lifestyle is costing you

HindiDiscoMonster: hasty ambush: jethro1138: Good for her. Who cares what she looks like? I seriously wish I could live like that.

BS. As erewhon posted above. She is fine with it up until she needs some modern medical care which of course is finaced by taxes she is not paying. No doubt if really bad weather/natural disaster hits she will expect to be rescued an taken to a modern shelter with thing slike electricity and indoor plumbing-again financed with taxes she is not paying.

If people really want to live off the grid morepower to them as long a they don't come back each time they need something from the grid.

No doubt her trips to town involve more than just getting chocolate and rice.

since you are psychic, can you please give me the winning lottery numbers for this week coming up (I don't need to tell you where)

Look at the pictures. that pail she is using when milking her goat. Does not look homemade to me.
I bet she has to buy food for her farm animals also. Probably even makes use of veterinary services as needed.

There is nothing noble about what this woman is doing

2012-12-29 06:24:52 PM
She makes her living running a back to basics retreat for bored rich people, she found the target demographic for her buisness model. the entire article was done for the purposes of marketing the buisnes.

this is not an article about a hermit. it's about a woman who founded a commune.

and this post is not to take anything away from her or what she is doing. I admire it actually. it's what she likes, and what she does, and is making a sustainable income from it.
