She lives mostly on the fungus harvested from her downstairs ladygarden..

muck4doo: They pay her a donation, which covers her £63-a-month council tax payments, repair costs and supplies of grain.

Why doesn't she grow the grain herself?

That takes real work.

Forged metal jewelry, ceramic pots and pitchers, metal pans.

Bans technology...get real. She's still leaving a carbon footprint.

I'm glad she's happy. Good for her. But hero? Let's all make mud huts and revert to the 2 A.D.

I don't think so.

Relatively Obscure: banned technology

And yet I see a house that was built, a harp, jars, baskets, furniture and clothing... this goddamn place is FULL of technology.

That's what I see also. There are plenty of books on the shelves, jars, pots, and a cupboard with recessed panel doors. Pretty much the same as if she were a Pikey living in her trailer. "Running a healing and retreat center" sounds like the main point of all this. It's phoney theater to attract the paying gullible.

Gawdzila: Well, she certainly fits the stereotype.
I'm glad she's having a good time and all, but frankly that sounds like a terribly unfulfilling existence to me.
Yay, repetitive manual labor every day.

I like doing manual labor. It is one of the most simple and fulfilling things you can do--doing things with your own hands, where you can see exactly how much you've done, and what the results are. It's a hell of a lot more satisfying than sitting in front of a computer all day, or dealing with other people.

And how many of you wish you had time to work in a garden, or re-do that old car, or build something for yourself? But you don't have time, because of your totally fulfilling job where you earn a lot of money, but get little else from it. Also, enjoy being fat.

This works great if you have 45 years to accumulate the capital to do it. Deciding to go off the grid and live like a hobbit at age 18? Doesn't work so well.

Molavian: That takes real work.

It's also not really efficient for a single person.

cakeman: I lived in the woods for a year and most of that time everyone badgered me about not having a job and my future .. than I got married and everyone broke my chops about having a family. I think most people are insecure about the lifestyle they feel trapped in.

I've always had a pretty good handle on not letting things own me or getting trapped in a lifestyle, but my wife and I are going to start trying for a kid when I get back to the States, and it's worrying me a bit that I'm going to have to give up, well... all of my other priorities.

Ugh. Glad you enjoy it, but I consider it demeaning and an insult to human nature. Manual labor is for machines to do. Now, if you'll pardon me, I have to go shovel the sidewalk.

robohobo: Alphax: robohobo: Why is it that Fark has such hate for people who live outside of society? I've noticed this in other threads, and I'm genuinely curious. Fark is generally all supportive of alternative lifestyles, but the second someone chooses to head out on their own, remove themselves from society and be self-sufficient, out come the claws. Same with folk who don't want to live in a city teeming with people.

Hmm, people in an online community and people who reject communities completely don't see eye to eye? This surprises you?

When its an online community who loudy prides itself on its open minded-ness, yeah, it does. And this woman isn't completely rejecting communities, she just lives in a very small one, away from larger societies bullshiat. She's not a hermit. And if she were, what of it? Farkers are always shouting to the rooftops that people should be free to live how they choose, fark who or what they want, and neener neener the haters. Apparently the line gets drawn when someone doesn't want to be a part of the group, because how could they ever not want to be part of the group? Fark really is like high school, sometimes.

Billy: What the hell is wrong with freedom? That's what it's all about.

George: Oh, yeah, that's right. That's what's it's all about, all right. But talkin' about it and bein' it, that's two different things. I mean, it's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. Of course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free, 'cause then they're gonna get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are. Oh, yeah, they're gonna talk to you, and talk to you, and talk to you about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em.

Because there are all sorts of safety nets that society provides that she is implicitly relying on, while contributing nothing to that society herself and then taking this hypocritical high-moralizing position about it.

Of course, she could yet show true independence from society:
* If she died of cancer while refusing modern medicine, that would be true independence.
* If she gets old and arthritic and cannot chop firewood and she simply freezes to death rather than draw a government pension, that would be independent.
* If somebody comes around, rapes her and burns down her hut, she could simply independently get on and rebuild, rather than going to the police and justice system.
* etc.

illannoyin: I forgot to add that it isn't a Hobbit style mud hut. Hobbits don't live in huts they live in holes in the ground. Not a dirty wet nasty hole (like I'm sure that hut is) filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell. Nor a dry bare sandy hole. A Hobbit hole means comfort!

Thank you!

MrT: while contributing nothing to that society herself

She offers people a retreat where they can get away from the stress of their life, and experience something more simple. They give her money in exchange. Sounds like some people see value in what she's doing.

MrT: and then taking this hypocritical high-moralizing position about it.

Right:

Mrs Orbach said: 'This is how I want to live. This lifestyle makes me feel really happy and at peace and this is my ideal home.'

She said: 'I don't miss anything at all about what is normally called reality. The quality of life, in my view, is decreasing and everything is speeding up and becoming more stressful.

'Once or twice I have joked about getting a takeaway pizza delivered here when I am tired after a long day. But I don't think anyone would deliver a pizza across two fields anyway.'

Yeah, look at this biatch eating crackers like she owns the place.

All this woman is trying to do is show others that it's possible to be happy without a 2-car garage, a corner office, and Facebook. She's not "shunning society". I don't understand why everybody feels the need to project their own issues onto her, and shiat all over the way she's chosen to live her life.

MadAzza: Who in the hell does she have sex with? If the answer is "no one," and I'm guessing it is, then what the hell does she look forward to every day? "Yippee, I get to eat and sh*t for one more day"?

That's so sad. I'm sure she's pretending to be happy, maybe even lying to herself about it, but ... no f*cking? She's not happy.

You missed the part in the article about her "keeping" three goats...

There are showers in the next buildings not the "round house." The bathrooms are shared. In Google Maps enter Brithdir Mawr, Newport, United Kingdom and you can see the place. Apparently they produce a fair amount of rubbish which is neatly bagged in black plastic and set on the curb in front.

You know I love that organic cooking
I always ask for more
And they call me Mr Natural
On down to the health food store
I only eat good sea salt
White sugar don't touch my lips
And my friends is always begging me
To take them on macrobiotic trips
Yes, they are

Oh, but at night I stake out my strong box
That I keep under lock and key
And I take it off to my closet
Where nobody else can see
I open that door so slowly
Take a peek up north and south
Then I pull out a Hostess Twinkie
And I pop it in my mouth

Yeah, in the daytime I'm Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
But at night I'm a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me

Well, at lunchtime you can always find me
At the Whole Earth Vitamin Bar
Just sucking on my plain white yogurt
From my hand thrown pottery jar
And sippin' a little hand pressed cider
With a carrot stick for dessert
And wiping my face in a natural way
On the sleeve of my peasant shirt
Oh, yeah

Ah, but when that clock strikes midnight
And I'm all by myself
I work that combination on my secret hideaway shelf
And I pull out some Fritos corn chips
Dr Pepper and an ole Moon Pie
Then I sit back in glorious expectation
Of a genuine junk food high

Oh yeah, in the daytime I'm Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
Oh, but at night I'm a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me

My friends down at the commune
They think I'm pretty neat
Oh, I don't know nothing about arts and crafts
But I give 'em all something to eat
I'm a friend to old Euell Gibbons
And I only eat home grown spice
I got a John Keats autographed Grecian urn
Filled up with my brown rice
Yes, I do

Oh, folks but lately I hae been spotted
With a Big Mac on my breath
Stumbling into a Colonel Sanders
With a face as white as death
I'm aftraid someday they'll find me
Just stretched out on my bed
With a handful of Pringles potato chips
And a Ding Dong by my head

In the daytime I'm Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
But at night I'm a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me

/epic song is epic
//was a fun one growing up
///if you haven't heard it, check it out!

Yeah, I don't get it either.  It's not like she's saying everyone needs to live this way or they're going to hell or something.  It's just an alternate lifestyle that is not inflicting itself on anyone.

2012-12-29 11:31:55 AM

randomjsa: Yes, people can and did live this way.

Except for the part where she's over 50 and completely healthy that is.

That would have absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that she lived the first 9/10 of her life in an upscale home, had vaccinations and good food and all that.. Yeah, cause she's lived in a hut for a year she's some kind of hero.
If everyone tried to do this, they cities would jail them all for vagrancy.

She's burning wood which makes her carbon footprint MUCH larger than a normal suburban home.

The Article is interesting but complete bullshiat.
