Meh. A hero is someone who uses their education or talents to contribute to society, not retreat from it for self-absorbed reasons. I don't fault her for her lifestyle choices, but neither do I think she is, in any way imaginable, a hero.

Yeah, pretty much this. A lot of people are going to make fun of her appearance (particularly those giant moles/tumors/whatever they are on her face, which probably need medical attention), but that stuff isn't important to her.

I am bothered by her withdrawal from intimacy with other humans, though. That can be fine, plenty of people choose to go solo, but sometimes that choice indicates fear of intimacy due to underlying mental illness, or prior sexual or physical abuse.

Why is it that Fark has such hate for people who live outside of society? I've noticed this in other threads, and I'm genuinely curious. Fark is generally all supportive of alternative lifestyles, but the second someone chooses to head out on their own, remove themselves from society and be self-sufficient, out come the claws. Same with folk who don't want to live in a city teeming with people.

same reason people equate their automobiles and conspicuous consumption as a right as well as a freedom they deserve :
self entitlement, greed and stupidity.

they are all for the big factory until their precious snowflakes get ass cancer from the water supply, then it's outrage.

you won't be surprised that a large majority of that hate comes from Gunmerica as well.

People who keep claiming to the rest of society that they live outside of society, don't live outside of society.  I don't know anybody who actually lives outside of society because, well, that's what they're doing.

I'm no Luddite, but I wouldn't be opposed to going back to a more modest existence. There are some things I don't think it's necessary to give up completely though. A wood stove, livestock, and a vegetable garden are great, but a very small amount of power can go a long way. Being able to refrigerate a small amount of food, for one thing. With a single 100w solar panel and a battery, you could power a mini-fridge, a few LEDs, a mobile router and a tablet. Now you have most of the sum of human knowledge in your hands, you can read books, watch films, listen to music (other than your own), stay informed about the world, communicate in an emergency, and make use of the hours after sunset.

The trick to this kind of existence is to make things as simple and stress-free for yourself as you can, while retaining only the technology that actually makes your life better.

2012-12-29 06:11:39 AM

You can still simplify your life and still have access to medical supplies. Start small. Find a small farm (not a hut), kill your TV, ban radio and stop watching movies. You will find, relatively quickly, how that will seperate you from the world on many levels. You don't have to live like a West Virginian mountaineer to embrace simplicity. That said, I know quite a few Anabaptists who are very insular but still have limited internet access, lights, cars, phones and many modern conveniences.

When its an online community who loudy prides itself on its open minded-ness, yeah, it does. And this woman isn't completely rejecting communities, she just lives in a very small one, away from larger societies bullshiat. She's not a hermit. And if she were, what of it? BS. As erewhon posted above. She is fine with it up until she needs some modern medical care which of course is finaced by taxes she is not paying. No doubt if really bad weather/natural disaster hits she will expect to be rescued an taken to a modern shelter with thing slike electricity and indoor plumbing-again financed with taxes she is not paying.

If people really want to live off the grid morepower to them as long a they don't come back each time they need something from the grid.

What a bunch of malarkey. She's paying property taxes so she obviously has income from somewhere. The article also stated that she "left" society. She may have a ton of cash saved somewhere for emergencies and/or she may sell eggs or some veggies. Speaking as a farmer, I still pay a ton in federal, state, and local taxes. I also have to report my income to the IRS. Just because she lives simply does not mean shes living off the taxpayer.

The whole point of a free society is that people have the right to choose. If she goes to the city to pick up goods--with money she's earned--what difference does it make?

This is Fark, where 75% of the population are engineers (with all of the personality quirks that entails). If a method or philosophy isn't 100% self-consistent, it offends their sensibilities.

If you notice any hate, let us know. I haven't seen any in this thread so far, but you should see a thread about people in Appalachia or other rural areas in the U.S. There you will definitely see some serious hate.

As for myself, I just think it's silly to consider her a "hero". As I said, I don't fault her for her lifestyle. More power to her. Live free and prosper. But she's not doing anything heroic. She's living and doing for herself and no one else. Not terribly heroic. I would feel the same about any hillbilly eating squirrels in West Va. I don't fault him, but neither do I think he is a hero.

Other's have made fun of her appearance. And while I don't get into that sort of trash talk, I can say with absolute confidence that fark does that about EVERYONE. Politicians, world leaders, supermodels, etc. I really don't think it's because she lives "outside society".
