Innocent children being shot and killed accidentally is the price we have to pay to prevent innocent children from being shot and killed intentionally.

I saw a gentleman with an AZ license plate the other day. His truck had bumper stickers that said "License to hunt liberals" and "License to hunt terrorists," tied together neatly with a shiny pair of truck nuts. I think that sums up that state rather concisely.

Was there a joke or meme in there I didn't get?

His point, and its a good one, is that mass shootings are so statistically rare that you can't point to anything as having "prevented" one with any degree of credibility.

There haven't been any sasquatch attacks at Utah universities, either. Clearly, high concentrations of Mormons are proof against bigfoot.

I'm waiting for concealed carry to be legal in some state like Mississippi and when the first mass shooting happens every black kid on campus ends up mistaken for the gunman.

If I were a billionaire any school with concealed or open carry would immediately get scholarships and endowments for students enrolled in the Islamic Student's marksman club. The clubhouse wouldn't have a gun safe so the students would have to be carrying them around campus. Maybe do something similar for African American students at historically white colleges too. I wonder how fast the school would create exception clauses for that.

So if you want to kill kids in Maricopa county, all you have o do is volunteer to join the posse and the sheriff will allocate you a school? Wow, bright idea.

For those of you not from Arizona, here's how it actually is in Maricopa County:

* No Democrats vote for Joe.
* No Republicans under 65 years of age vote for Joe. Whatever you may think of the GOP nationally, in Arizona they're more libertarian than fundamentalist, and are more pissed at the money Joe spends on slush and loses in lawsuits than they are interested in his "tough on crime" schtick.
* Joe goes into Sun City, east Mesa, and all the retirement communities and tells the blue-hairs that if he isn't re-elected Sheriff, he can't keep the darkies out of their neighborhoods.
* Retirees vote at a 99% rate in Maricopa County (the 1% are the ones who die in the bus on the way to the polls
* Sheriff Joe re-elected with a "mandate" from the people! Yee-haw! (Fires guns in the air a la Yosemite Sam)

This problem will go away, but sort of like when you're in a common feeder line and all four of the teller windows clear up at once so you know you had to wait the longest possible time for a four-station service window, it will be a question of whether Joe dies first, or the people who elect him die in sufficient numbers first. And once we've waited the longest possible time for either of those two to happen, they'll both kind of happen at the same time and finally Joe will not be re-elected. Over/under says 2022 (he will stand for re-election in each Presidential election year).

mgshamster: Jim_Callahan: Diogenes: I wonder how old Joe feels about the NRA's push to allow you to shoot cops.

To be fair, Arpaio is kind of case-in-point for law officers sometimes being up to no good and citizens needing to be allowed legal recourse to defend themselves form the cops beyond trying to find other cops that aren't engaged in illegal activity.

Wolf_Blitzer: Do you carry a defibrillator? Epi-pen? You're far more likely to use those, and to save a life instead of taking one.

Most home-scale first aid kits have an epi-pen, and you should not carry a defibrillator because you're far more likely to kill someone with it than you are shooting a gun at them. People survive getting shot all the time, some dumbass stopping their heart because they're using a surgical tool when they have no diagnostic expertise not so much.

On the subject of saving lives, the BJS estimates for the number of times a gun is used defensively in the US is about 1 million per year. That far exceeds deaths caused if you're really serious about using that as a criterion.

You have no idea what a defibrillator is, do you?

Also, where can you get a first aid kit with an epipen? Especially considering that epipens require a prescription (at least in the US).

A friend of mine carries a medical kit that also contains a bottle of bourbon and a full seasoning rack. For marinade, in case the patient doesn't make it.

I love my friends.

Apparently he loves his friends too. Slow roasted.

There is absolutely no demonstrated evidence of this. Columbine and many other schools have armed police resource officers. Many malls, theaters etc. have off-duty police as security, who are also armed. This notion that these shooters are picking gun-free zones is nonsense.

The colorado shooter went to the only theater out of seven within a 20 mile radius that prohibited bringing an otherwise lawfully concealed weapon into the building. Those security guards you see are not 'off-duty police' they are slightly above minimum wage and the gun is only to protect themselves, not you.
In fact, a police officer has no duty to protect you, as ruled by the supreme court of the united states. So really, you're just scared that you have to take personal responsibility for your own safety and would rather be 'dead with someone else to blame' than 'alive by your own power.'

What a big, scary world you live in. I don't know how you make it out your front door without either pissing yourself or shooting the paperboy.

Seriously, this ain't the Wild West, no matter how much you wish it was. All this crap about "taking responsibility" is just another gun nut wanting to feel big.

I feel sorry for you. Someday you'll wake up.
Better worried over nothing than care-free and blindsided.

"Armed Volunteers" is all we to know here. He is just borrowing from LaPierre's first public commentary after the children were gunned down for just showing up at school. The head of the NRA suggested that they could provide voluteers to protect schools. Now- I am not here to debate gun laws- I believe that the we need to address our mental health system. But for the head of the NRA to offer up volunteers- really? I guess this is just right up Sheriff Joe's alley. I live in the deep south- so guns are all around. Ostensibly weilded by upstanding law abiding citizens. Some of these people are personal friends of mine. Most of these friends of mine should not be allowed to volunteer to "protect" a school. Unless of course we would like to see some sensless hairtrigger shootem' ups.

While it would be awesome to demonstrate the gun-nut's hypocrisy, this plan also carries an extremely high risk of some poor kid getting shot.

Acceptable risk for the lulz that would be had.

I should have specified that if I were more of the evil billionaire sort, but I imagine those clubs would be shut down long before their doors open.

Alternative plans include wanting to spread "safe zones" by giving free guns to eligible urban folk living in areas bordering less urban dwellers. Meet the minimum legal requirements of your state, get a Glock, since clearly more guns would just spread the safety from the surrounding areas to there and I'm sure the neighboring residents would welcome the safety boost. Add some bonus endowments to Occupy protesters in states where it's legal carry as well. Free "Stand Your Ground" courses and legal aid in the appropriate states to the above as well.

Here's a shock to nobody - when rights are expanded for the less privileged, the privileged naturally resists them. When rights are expanded for the privileged, the first thing the privileged do is put up barriers to ensure only they get to benefit from it. Clearly people who can't normally afford or be convinced to have guns need incentives. For safety.

You're basically saying that a person is going to act in a rational manner when planning a rampage where they slaughter dozens of innocent people. Makes perfect sense.
