mgshamster: Jim_Callahan: Diogenes: I wonder how old Joe feels about the NRA's push to allow you to shoot cops.

To be fair, Arpaio is kind of case-in-point for law officers sometimes being up to no good and citizens needing to be allowed legal recourse to defend themselves form the cops beyond trying to find other cops that aren't engaged in illegal activity.

Wolf_Blitzer: Do you carry a defibrillator? Epi-pen? You're far more likely to use those, and to save a life instead of taking one.

Most home-scale first aid kits have an epi-pen, and you should not carry a defibrillator because you're far more likely to kill someone with it than you are shooting a gun at them. People survive getting shot all the time, some dumbass stopping their heart because they're using a surgical tool when they have no diagnostic expertise not so much.

On the subject of saving lives, the BJS estimates for the number of times a gun is used defensively in the US is about 1 million per year. That far exceeds deaths caused if you're really serious about using that as a criterion.

You have no idea what a defibrillator is, do you?

Also, where can you get a first aid kit with an epipen? Especially considering that epipens require a prescription (at least in the US).

A friend of mine carries a medical kit that also contains a bottle of bourbon and a full seasoning rack. For marinade, in case the patient doesn't make it.

I love my friends.

Apparently he loves his friends too. Slow roasted.

For those of you not from Arizona, here's how it actually is in Maricopa County:

* No Democrats vote for Joe.
* No Republicans under 65 years of age vote for Joe. Whatever you may think of the GOP nationally, in Arizona they're more libertarian than fundamentalist, and are more pissed at the money Joe spends on slush and loses in lawsuits than they are interested in his "tough on crime" schtick.
* Joe goes into Sun City, east Mesa, and all the retirement communities and tells the blue-hairs that if he isn't re-elected Sheriff, he can't keep the darkies out of their neighborhoods.
* Retirees vote at a 99% rate in Maricopa County (the 1% are the ones who die in the bus on the way to the polls
* Sheriff Joe re-elected with a "mandate" from the people! Yee-haw! (Fires guns in the air a la Yosemite Sam)

This problem will go away, but sort of like when you're in a common feeder line and all four of the teller windows clear up at once so you know you had to wait the longest possible time for a four-station service window, it will be a question of whether Joe dies first, or the people who elect him die in sufficient numbers first. And once we've waited the longest possible time for either of those two to happen, they'll both kind of happen at the same time and finally Joe will not be re-elected. Over/under says 2022 (he will stand for re-election in each Presidential election year).

So if you want to kill kids in Maricopa county, all you have o do is volunteer to join the posse and the sheriff will allocate you a school? Wow, bright idea.

I'm going to go out on limb and say that absolutely nothing happens.

Eventually, even less than nothing will happen; as Joe's Rough Riders become increasingly disinterested in working for free. Once the publicity fades, so do they.

taurusowner: LordJiro: Guns in schools are a great idea! After all, schools are a notoriously stress-free area. No WAY could this result in a teacher shooting a few kids, or a student getting ahold of the gun and blasting themselves and/or other people!

Right wingers base their ideas around Ayn Rand, the Bible, and action movies. They have no idea how reality works..

Carry to cite any examples of licensed CCW holders getting stressed and slaughtering people?

I don't know, but there was this son who took his mother's guns recently....

You are aware of what getting a CCW permit entails?

ds_4815: taurusowner: They carry guns to go shopping and get gas and eat in restaurants and pass you in the parking lot.

You're not exactly helping the "gun owners != paranoid" argument.

Why on earth is that paranoid?

You keep a fire extinguisher and fire alarms in places you think a fire may occur. Not because you think it will, or want it to, but because you know if it does, you cannot solve it with your bare hands

You keep a spare tire in your care because flats may occur. Not because you think it will, or want it to, but because you know if it does, you cannot solve it with your bare hands

You wear a seatbelt in your car because accidents can happen. Not because you think they will, or want them to, but because you know if it does, you cannot solve it with your bare hands.

There are hundreds of examples. Safety rails, first aid kits, flashlights and candles, spare cell phone batteries. Hundreds if not thousands of examples of things you keep around or steps you take just in case something bad happens. Not because you think it will happen, or want it to happen. But because you know sometimes they do happen, and you're not capable of solving the problem with your bare hands.

Muggings happen. Assaults happen. Home invasions happen. Even mass shootings happen. So some people choose to keep a tool that can help in those situations. Not because they think it will. Not because they want it to. But because they know it can. And they know they can't solve these problems with their bare hands.

That's not paranoia.

Peanuts.
Over 200 kids a year with around nine thousand hospitalizations.

Rodney Peairs. Don't know the specifics of his licence and don't care. He is a perfect example of the sick nature of gun lovers.

The state of Texas did not implement a concealed weapons permit system until 1995. Your claim is therefore a lie, and you are therefore a liar for issuing it.

Try these on for size then:

Richard Poplawski - Shot and killed 3 cops. (2009)
Michael McLendon - Shot and killed 10 people and himself (2009)
Carey H. Dyess - Shot and killed 5 people and himself (2011)
Omar Thornton - 9 dead, including himself. (2010)
Gerardo Regalado - 5 dead, including himself. (2010)
Christopher Speight - 8 dead. (2010)

That's just some...there's even more. So, do we want to keep pretending that CCW holders don't have at least the same potential to be mass murderers as other people,?

I have further researched your list. Omar Thornton lived in Connecticut, which issues concealed weapons permits on a "may issue" basis. No credible source has confirmed that Mr. Thornton had been issued such a permit.

You are evidently deriving your data from the Violence Policy Center, which is known to rely upon demonstrably dishonest claims: http://maint.ssrn.com/?abstract_id=2095754 (note that the link is currently down, but it will be restored when maintenance is finished).

And Michael McLendon was a former cop. But it's ok for cops to have guns 'cause they're professionals.

That's natural selection. If God liked those kids, he'd have made them not allergic.

Great, you've found one that may not have had a permit. That still doesn't change the fact that we have had CCW holders "getting stressed and slaughtering people." The CCW permit is not a magical talisman that keeps people from being unbalanced and/or violent.

And just to clarify, my comment about pretending that CCW holders are pristine saints was not directed at you, but at taurusowner who asked for the citations of CCW holders killing folks. My bad for doing a shiatty job of making that clear.

I am not anti-gun, by the way. I'm just anti-stupid, and this discussion tends to bring out the stupid. "MOAR GUNZ!" is not the answer. That's pretty much obvious since we have enough privately owned guns in the US to give one each to nearly 90% of our population. "TAKE AWAI ALL TEH GUNZ!" is also not the answer, for a whole list of reasons that should be fairly obvious. Both of those are treating the symptoms without even bothering to ask what the cause might be, and that is where we should be focusing. The questions we ask shouldn't be, "How did Shooter A get a hold of Guns X, Y, and Z?" or "Why weren't the people at Location S armed as well?" We should be asking, "Why did Shooter A kill those people, and what can we do to prevent it?"

No, it's gunsterbation. Thank you for letting us all know exactly why you own a gun and why you are the last person I'd want armed in a violent situation.

taurusowner: cantsleep: ongbok: I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this won't end well.

I'm going to go out on limb and say that absolutely nothing happens.

This.

Hate to interrupt the leftist circle jerk going on in this thread, but this is going to amount to a whole lot of nothing. The whole "blood running in the streets" this is beyond worn out. There's not going to be any mistaken identities, accidentally shot cops, students, or teachers. No gunning down of illegals.

And there's a damn good chance there won't be any mass school shootings at any of these places. Mass shooters avoid places where they know they will get stopped before accomplishing their goals. They're crazy, but most aren't stupid.

So despite this being "Sheriff Joe"...there really isn't that much of a story here. Some guys sitting in the school parking lots drinking coffee and....that's it. They happen to have guns on their belts. So what. I would bet most of you Farkers encounter someone with a CCW almost every day without even knowing it. Maybe it's that guy filling his tank up at the gas station in the morning. Maybe it was that mom in front of you in line at Wal-Mart. Maybe someone in that big group at Crapplebees was carrying. People carry guns. Nothing happens. If they're murderers, chances are they didn't go through the background check rigmarole to get a CCW license. But they're not, and nothing happens. They carry guns to go shopping and get gas and eat in resistant and pass you in the parking lot. Nothing happens. Get over it.

Is it guns, per se?

Let's unpack this, shall we?

CCW results in how many appropriately psycho-moralitarily-normalized markspersons per year?
