Nothing to worry about. Most of the volunteers are priests and Boy Scout troop leaders.

Wait wait wait... Aren't schools supposed to be no gun zones? How can be be legally sending civilians into GFZs while armed?,

Depends on the state. Most states yes, but not all. Some leave it up to the county. Others, like Utah I believe, allow concealed carry in all Universities (no school shootings either) And these people being part of a sheriff's posse have some degree of legal exemption. I'm not familiar with Arizona law, but I don't find it hard to believe this is legal. Sheriff's can still Deputize, though they generally don't use that authority like they used to.

taurusowner: So despite this being "Sheriff Joe"...there really isn't that much of a story here. Some guys sitting in the school parking lots drinking coffee and....that's it. They happen to have guns on their belts. So what. I would bet most of you Farkers encounter someone with a CCW almost every day without even knowing it. Maybe it's that guy filling his tank up at the gas station in the morning. Maybe it was that mom in front of you in line at Wal-Mart. Maybe someone in that big group at Crapplebees was carrying. People carry guns. Nothing happens. If they're murderers, chances are they didn't go through the background check rigmarole to get a CCW license. But they're not, and nothing happens. They carry guns to go shopping and get gas and eat in resistant and pass you in the parking lot. Nothing happens. Get over it.

I happen to agree with you.  But I also think its pretty fark'd up that putting armed men and women in schools is considered a rational response to the recent incident.

His point, and its a good one, is that mass shootings are so statistically rare that you can't point to anything as having "prevented" one with any degree of credibility.

There haven't been any sasquatch attacks at Utah universities, either. Clearly, high concentrations of Mormons are proof against bigfoot.

Guns in schools are a great idea! After all, schools are a notoriously stress-free area. No WAY could this result in a teacher shooting a few kids, or a student getting ahold of the gun and blasting themselves and/or other people!

Right wingers base their ideas around Ayn Rand, the Bible, and action movies. They have no idea how reality works..

I know right? Why can't everywhere be a paradise of safety where democrats have had total control for the last 50 years and violent crime has been eliminated.

Like Chicago or Detroit.

It's neither a new idea nor an irrational one...

April 16, 2000

WASHINGTON - Marking the first anniversary of the shooting deaths at Columbine High School, President Clinton announced $120 million in new federal grants Saturday to place more police officers in schools and help even the youngest kids cope with their problems.

"In our national struggle against youth violence we must not fail our children; our future depends on it," the president said in his weekly radio address.
...
Clinton announced $40 million in grants for 23 school districts that he said have found successful, comprehensive approaches to help troubled young people.

"These districts are bringing school nurses and counselors together to respond to warning signs like depression or bullying," Clinton said. "They are improving classroom security and expanding after-school and mentoring programs."

Clinton also unveiled the $60-million fifth round of funding for "COPS in School," a Justice Department program that helps pay the costs of placing police officers in schools to help make them safer for students and teachers. The money will be used to provide 452 officers in schools in more than 220 communities.

"Already, it has placed 2,200 officers in more than 1,000 communities across our nation, where they are heightening school safety as well as coaching sports and acting as mentors and mediators for kids in need," Clinton said.

Logic dictates, that if more guns made people safer, the United States would have the lowest violent crime rates in the world.

It's almost as if complex social issues are irreducibly complex... and any attempts to reduce it to one variable would be foolish at best, retarded at worst.

This is an open challenge. A gauntlet has been thrown down. A chip is on someones shoulder, basically saying "Come over here and try it. Do it. I dare you." And the backdrop chosen for this pissing match are public schools. It's a losing game. Crazy people don't care if they live. Someone is going to answer a challenge like this one day and I don't believe it will end well.

Completely disagree.  Arming schools is irrational in any civilized society.  It also doesn't work.  By the time whomever is armed figures out that something is going on - the damage has already been done.  And Clinton supported a number of mind boggling stupid things over the years so holding him up as an example doesn't help your argument.

Also he got a ton of money from outside sources this past election.

There are lots of outsiders who really love him. He's pretty much all that they have left to worship and adore, since they've been abandoned by their former saviors like Palin, Herman Cain, Bachmann, and that idiot Romney. And FSM forbid anyone even mention GWB, that's blasphemy. So, there are a whole lot of Teabaggers in places like Virginia who are sending lots of $$ to support his efforts.

The funny thing about all of this is that guns out of school is actually a pretty new thing, becoming common only in the past 30 years or so. UP to the 50's and 60's students and teachers having firearms in school was commonplace. Students would bring hunting guns in and leave them in their lockers or cars so that they can catch as much hunting time as possible after school. Boy Scout troops would teach young children on .22lr rifles, often using school ranges. There were even shooting teams. My old high school actually has a 4 lane 25 yard range in the basement. It's since been converted to storage, but it got used for the school marksmanship team in the 60s. You don't gotta take my word for it, go ahead and ask you parents or grandparents about it sometime. Sure, every single kid didn't do it in every single school. But a lot did. I would be that if you went to a retirement home or had a chance to talk to a handful of elderly people, you would hear a story or two about hunting after school with guns they locked in the principal's office during class. It's only in the past few decades where the idea of a firearm coming near school property became shocking.

You're basically saying that a person is going to act in a rational manner when planning a rampage where they slaughter dozens of innocent people. Makes perfect sense.
