What a great reminder of why we can't have nice things.

Well it's a good thing we're not facing dire economic circumstances or anything.

Nevertheless, it's all Obama's fault.

Don't blame me. I didn't vote for any of these idiots.

The bill, which defended by comparing women to cows and pigs, outlaws abortions after 20 weeks and actually starts the clock after a woman's last menstrual period."

You know who else starts the pregnancy clock after a woman's last menstrual period?

Doctors.

Exactly. The Republicans do many short-sighted, stupid, and/or insulting things, but using the last menstrual period as a baseline for counting weeks of pregnancy isn't one of them. If they proposed legislation punishing women for activities during those two weeks or so before conception, then there'd be a problem.

*shrug* if someone is busting down my door, and i happen to have a gun, they will get shot if they persist after a shouted warning.

If that person happens to be a cop, well, cops should be opposed to no-knock warrants on the basis that they put cops in unnecessary danger.

People should be able to defend themselves in their own homes. Police are thugs and gangsters at this point; maybe things would improve if their actions could have any consequences.

Not big enough. And, at least for the Senate, only by selecting the stupidest morans they could find. Had they picked a couple even halfway sane people, they would have two of those seats.

Defining life as beginning before conception is probably the craziest of them all on this list because of the impact that such legislation would have on people.

It would lead to more people being jailed. Banning certain forms of contraception. Increase in the number of poor people. Increase in the number of children born out of wed-lock. You know, things the GOP loves.

We passed the point of "conservatism" becoming "regressivism" some time ago.

These people will not be happy until it's 1855 again.

I noticed that there was nothing related to jobs creation on there. That's because the GOP knows what to do when it comes to the creation of jobs.

To provide fair consideration, most opponents of the law are biased against Republicans for entirely justified reasons and suffer an irrational aversion to firearms for entirely unjustified reasons. As such, a rational assessment of the law was often entirely ignored.

Yeah, cops are usually GOP-hating liberals.

Link

Every time police Sergeant Joseph Hubbard stops a speeder or serves a search warrant, he says he worries suspects assume they can open fire -- without breaking the law.

Hubbard, a 17-year veteran of the police department in Jeffersonville, Indiana, says his apprehension stems from a state law approved this year that allows residents to use deadly force in response to the "unlawful intrusion" by a "public servant" to protect themselves and others, or their property.

"If I pull over a car and I walk up to it and the guy shoots me, he's going to say, 'Well, he was trying to illegally enter my property,'" said Hubbard, 40, who is president of Jeffersonville Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 100. "Somebody is going get away with killing a cop because of this law."

Indiana is the first U.S. state to specifically allow force against officers, according to the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys in Washington, which represents and supports prosecutors. The National Rifle Association pushed for the law, saying an unfavorable court decision made the need clear and that it would allow homeowners to defend themselves during a violent, unjustified attack. Police lobbied against it.

legalizing shooting at cops

I don't see the problem with this. This is exactly what conservatives insist the 2nd Amendment is for.

Indeed. I'd rather face a judge than a mortician. Anyone knocking down my door, whether they're yelling "Police!" or anything else, will be shot.

Well in that case, I had about a 14 month gestational period

Huh? Not really - there's a bit of misunderstanding there. The "LMP method" - that's what you're attempting to describe - is only used when the fertilization date isn't known, because the assumption is that fertilization probably occurred 14 days after the last menstrual period. When you're calculating gestational age at a granularity of weeks, that rule of thumb works pretty well, as it typically gives them a week, plus or minus, from which to estimate delivery dates and fetal development. However, if the fertilization date is known, doctors don't count backwards from the last menstrual period. It's a rule of thumb, chuckleheads, useful for estimation (especially when you're going by weeks.)

Again, and this is the important part, if the date of fertilization is known, doctors don't have to estimate. Using the LMP method, a tool of estimation, as a hard rule would actually cause some confusion - the law would, indeed, indicate for some pregnancies that life began before the date of fertilization. That's the tongue-in-cheek point made by the crack in the article - treating a rule of thumb as gospel would cause edge cases that could very well result in legal headaches.

Luckily, sanity still prevails.

Actually, you don't quite understand what is going on. Human gestation is 38 weeks from implantation. on average there is about two weeks between the end of the last period and implantation. Instead of having the woman doing a bunch of math (day of last period + 2 weeks + 38 weeks = due date) they just tell them 40 weeks from their last period. A nice round number that is easy to remember based upon a date that doesn't need any math to get to.

Facts do matter, so two notes about your comment.

1. It bans abortions after 18 weeks of gestation.

2. You lie!
-Removes the requirement that every religious employer that provide prospective insureds written notice that the religious employer refuses to cover all FDA-approved contraceptive methods for religious purposes.
-Removes the provision that prohibits religious employers from discriminating against an employee who independently chooses to obtain insurance coverage or prescriptions for contraceptives from another source.
