4. If you see a parent struggling with an out-of-control child, don't look the other way. If you are able to offer any kind of help (your time, resources, wisdom), do it. Don't wait.

That always works so well!

Actually, Diogenes, I do try to help kids and parents sometimes like that. If I see a kid having a bad day with their mom, dad, or both in a store or elsewhere, I will interject, start talking to the kid who's acting up, basically to distract them and perhaps calm them down. Often the kids forget what they were upset about because a strange man is talking to them directly (with their parents next to them, of course).

Just did it the other day at a Taos coffee shop when a young boy was acting up and his dad was trying desperately to calm him down. The kid starting pointing to a hot air balloon ride pamphlet, saying he wanted to do that. His dad tried to get him back to his seat, so I squatted down and explained to the kid he'd have to get up before dawn to catch the morning uplifts, how the hot air got into the balloon for the burners, etc. After that, I got back up to get my hot chocolate. The kid stood up and said thank you, and went with his dad back to his mom.

As for teaching kids not to fear death, I'm not too keen on that.  They should be aware of death at least though, especially its finality.

I became aware of death around 2 or 3 when I found my new puppy squashed flat in the gravel driveway. I went inside crying that my puppy was dead.  My mom explained Dad had run it over by accident going to work that morning. I think I asked what would we do with his remains, to which my mom said the wind would take him away. Next day, my puppy's body was gone, probably buried by my dad once he got home.

So rather than immediately dispose of it and then explain to you why your puppy was gone if you asked where he was, they left the car-flattened remains in the driveway for you to find, then continued to leave it lying there all day for your dad to deal with when he got home?

I'm sorry, but that sounds incredibly farked up.  For one, if my dad ran over our dog, I'd like to think he'd know right away that he just ran something over rather than just squish it and go about his merry way, and two, I'd like to think that they wouldn't leave the flattened carcass of our beloved family pet lying in the driveway waiting for someone else to come home and clean it up.

The most perverted straight chicks I have ever met were far right wing conservatives. Most of them were into bondage and I'm still not clear on how they rationalized their sex lives with their politics.

So anyways here is Michelle right before she had group sex with a bunch of guys.

You're a braver man than I.  I suppose if it were a tense situation and the parent really seems like they may need help, I would try.  But my experience with unsolicited help hasn't been the greatest.

As for death, I see no reason to sugar coat it.  You have to gauge the delivery to a child's age and relative maturity.  Fear of mortal threats is a good thing when properly applied.  It's how we survive.  You don't want to lose your shiat, but you don't want to disregard the real threat.

But if you don't teach your children to fear death how are they going to grow up to be good Christians? If they don't grow up to be good Christians, how are they going to be good Conservatives? If they don't grow up to be good Conservatives, how are they going to win the herp and derp championship?

The honoured dead are not mourned, but celebrated. The eyes of a dead student are opened, and all fellow Real Americans present roar to tell the warriors in Jesusland that the warrior is joining them. The body of the dead student is viewed mainly as an empty shell to be disposed of; particularly well-respected students have their companions accompany the body for interment or disposal, "just" to keep away Liberals (though a privately held act of respect for the departed). Students who may have a question about whether they will be worthy to enter Jesusland, such as not having died in glorious battle, may have a dangerous quest held in their name by their surviving mate and his or her companions.

It was linked at the end of TFA. Here it is:

These seven simple commonsense steps are adapted from a post I published on my blog after the horrific Newtown massacre. Our hearts ache, but we are not completely helpless or hopeless in the face of evil and the unknown. And we are not alone. This Christmas, cherish life, keep faith, and practice self-empowerment.

7. Teach our kids about the acts of heroes in times of crisis. Tell them about Newtown teacher Vicki Soto's self-sacrifice and bravery. Tell them about Clackamas-mall shopper Nick Meli, a concealed-carry-permit holder whose quick action may have prevented additional deaths. Tell them about Family Research Council security guard Leo Johnson, who protected workers from a crazed gunman. Tell them about the heroic men in the Aurora movie theater who gave their lives taking bullets for their loved ones. Tell them about armed Holocaust Museum security guard Stephen Tyrone Johns, who died fighting back against the museum's nutball attacker. Tell them about armed private citizen Jeanne Assam, who gunned down the New Life Church attacker in Colorado Springs and saved untold lives.

6. Train our kids. When they see something troublesome or wrong, they should say something. Students, teachers, and parents: If a young classmate exhibits bizarre or violent behavior toward himself or herself, report it right away. If it gets ignored, say it louder. Don't give up. Don't just shrug off the "weirdo" saying or doing dangerous things, and don't just hope someone else will act.

5. Limit our kids' time online and control their exposure to desensitizing cultural influences. Turn off the TV. Get them off the bloody video games. Protect them from age-inappropriate Hollywood violence. Make sure they are active and engaged with us and the world, and not pent up in a room online every waking moment.

4. If you see a parent struggling with an out-of-control child, don't look the other way. If you are able to offer any kind of help (your time, resources, wisdom), do it. Don't wait.

3. We still don't know the medical condition of the Newtown shooter. But we do know that social stigmas are strong. We don't need government to take immediate, individual action to break those stigmas. There are millions of children, teens, and young adults suffering from very real mental illnesses. Be silent no more about your family's experiences, your struggles, your pains, and your fears. Speak up.

2. Prepare and protect your community. Joe Cascarelli of Westcliffe, Colo., wrote me about how he and other citizens took their children's safety into their own hands. "It was ten years ago that our sheriff put an ad in the local paper to initiate the formation of the Sheriff's Posse. About 40 of us volunteered; today we have about 20 active Posse members. Eight years ago, the Posse command staff offered to provide the local school district with daily security patrols when the school was in session, at school athletic events, and during school dances including the annual prom." Law enforcement conducted emergency drills, training to prepare for mass shootings and joint sessions with first responders.

"The Posse has continued its patrols at school events and during the school day. Posse patrols have become a visible, accepted part of our community," Cascarelli told me. "Anyone intent on harm would see armed uniformed personnel at the school daily. The Posse even has an Amber Alert at the local rodeo. When an atrocity like Columbine, Virginia Tech and most recently in Newtown, Conn., happens, all we hear is carefully crafted words of grief, heartrending interviews with parents, and TV's talking heads with knee-jerk 'solutions.' Well, our little community has implemented a local solution. Trained, armed volunteers daily protect our children. What is the matter with the rest of the country? Where are concerned parents and citizens willing to carve out some time to provide similar security?"

1. Teach our kids to value and respect life by valuing and respecting them always. And in loving and valuing life, teach them also not to fear death. The Catholic hymn "Be Not Afraid" offers time-tested solace and sage advice:

If you pass through raging waters, in the sea, you shall not drown.

If you walk amidst the burning flames, you shall not be harmed.

If you stand before the pow'r of hell and death is at your side, know that I am with you, through it all.

Be not afraid, I go before you always.

Come follow Me and I shall give you rest.

That's odd. I know this total slut who has had at least one abortion, but she's a total Republican because they are "for god" and "respect life" and there's no other reason to support them. "Her ideas include: not letting your kids play video games, and teaching them not to fear death."

Right there in the first paragraph. I wonder why they didn't include the actual text of that list item? Probably because it doesn't sound as stupid as implying she suggested merely that "not letting kids play video games" as a way to prevent the next tragedy. TFA specifically mentioned that point as an item to be mocked but when viewed in its entirely it isn't quite so silly, is it?
