That point at about 1:50 was pretty intense.

The rest... "I'll take people that take a stupid sport WAY too seriously for $100, Alex"

Yea, those jerks taking Olympic sports seriously. What morans.

I first read this as beer pong and was wondering why it was on the sports tab.

/4 hrs until I can get a needed drink.

Just because it's an Olympic sport, doesn't mean it's actually intelligent and a "sport". I believe golf is an Olympic sport. and Badminton.

If it involves scoring points, it's a sport or game.

If it involves times or distances, it's an athletic endeavor and those should be celebrated more.

Did you notice one of the guys was using a crutch?  Or the huge fat man?  Those impressed me.

The guy using the crutch, that was from the Paralympics in case one couldn't tell. That would've been a great shot on its own just for where the ball landed (just on the edge of the table). Having the crutch was just adding to the degree of difficulty.

How fast can you jack yourself off and how far can you shoot your load? Let's Celebrate!

In the event that someone will read this who doesn't think ping pong is comparable to competitive masturbation:

In #3 and #8, the ball crosses under the net off the table. Are these valid shots?

/I was impressed, but others can keep believing that these were less impressive than the time they hit a zinger in their beer-league softball game.

Played about 80 ping pong games over the holidays with my parents, sis and bro-in-law. Now I don't think we were playing the same game these dudes are.

Love watching high-level players though, just like most sports. The coordination and dexterity is crazy.

Watching these (I didn't watch it in the Olympics) makes me believe the "sport" description. Speed, dexterity, defined rules for scoring by hitting a ball in a certain way and all the non-Parathletes looked as fit as fiddles. Being drunk would make you worse at this competition, unlike darts.

I guess so; I had no idea that was valid. This information will never help me in a real ping-pong game, though.

The ball, having been served or returned, shall be struck so that it passes over or around the net assembly and touches the opponent's court, either directly or after touching the net assembly.

much like tennis, there is no requirement for the ball to go "over" the net. As long as it hits the opposite side of the table after hitting your paddle, then it's a valid point. how it gets there is unimportant.

On an additional note, the "hitting your paddle" is important part. If your oponent hits a high backspin ball that hits your side of the table, and then bounces back over the net without you contacting it... it's your loss of point.

A valid point MUST hit your paddle, and then the opposite side of the table.

Note that I didn't post a YouTube video, nor do I claim to be an Olympic "athlete".

Thanks for the info.

/looks for the DeLorean to go back to Christmas party where shots were not counted unless they went over the net.

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, it bothers me when people are passionate about absolutely nothing in life. On the other hand, I don't understand how anyone can be passionate about ping-pong.

/I ended up dumping my cos-playing girlfriend. Sometimes no passion is better.

If you can do it while smoking a cigarette, it's not a sport.

I enjoyed that video more than expected.

Excellent video.

And a significant portion of those who would poopoo it have no real understanding of how great some of those shots were. Much like most other paddle-ball sports, playing against anyone good, getting your paddle in front of the ball isn't even close to enough.

Yep, legal. Just like in tennis when the occasional shot goes around the net. Needs to be hit, needs to end up on the other side, and in table tennis needs to bounce first.

I seem to remember service rules being a bit more strict about where the ball starts and ends. Plus the ball needs to be tossed, so most of the trick serves out there aren't tournament legal.

Played a lot as a kid and some of those returns were amazing. I hate how they serve the ball though.
