Aello: Southern women use to do whatever they could to rid themselves of freckles. Well, high society women anyways. Freckles were a sign of "low class" and "those dreadful women who had to *gasp* work outside". Milk baths, lemon juice were among some of the most popular treatments I think.

It was believed that the sun brought out freckles, and in Society, only laborers got tanned. The whiter your skin the better... on several levels. Same thing held in Europe for a while. That may explain the French trend of white painted faces, but I'm not sure there.

fyrewede: I've always had chestnut brown hair and freckles -- more when I was young than now, but I still have them.  Not sure if they show up in my profile pic here ... maybe a little?

It was clear to me early on that some people (my mom, that cute boy I met at a garden party when I was 5 or 6 years old, my husband) love freckles and find them attractive... and some people, for whatever reason, find them odd or unattractive.  I've always liked them, personally, and thought they were cute.  Some of us wear them better than others (e.g. I don't find them flattering on actress Maya Rudolph).

By the time I was in high school, I decided I had more important things to worry about than my freckles and whether or not this person or that person found them appealing...perhaps because something in me understood that anyone who is going to decide whether or not to like me based on a feature of my skin was probably not someone whose good opinion was much worth having.

It is probably for this reason that I have little patience for the type of navel-gazing the author engages in here.  There are people out there with REAL problems -- cerebral palsy, cancer, etc. -- and they're transcending those challenges and making a positive contribution against much greater odds.  And I'm going to whine about my farking freckles?  Sistah please...

They do show up. And they are very nice. And you have a magnificent rack.

What? She does.

deamonbutterfly: We are taught from an early age to never like ourselves. We need to be like this girl, or that girl.. People blame the media for suicides of young, impressionable kids. To an extent maybe, I think they don't help at all, but it all comes back to parenting. Setting a good example for your daughter, teaching her to love herself and who she is on the outside and in. The culture of Vogue, and Elle may seep in, but if she was taught from an early age (by exampe too, not just words) that we are all beautifully different, it might not seep into the darkest of places.

I'm quite contrary (no i'm not!), society said have a body image problem, so I said no. I also *never* read those trashy girly magazines, because everytime I did I could feel the doubt seeping in. I'll have none of that, thank you. I'm a good enough person who looks as good as the amount of effort i'm willing to put in will get me, and that's just fine.

Mum also gave me the benefit of telling me about all her troubles with her freckles, and how hating them never helped and trying to get rid of them never worked, so I didn't bother. sure some kids picked on me, but everytime i got called freckle face i just agreed with them, because it was true. confused bullies look so funny.

Lucy Liu is American born. Asian Asians are more uptight about flawless skin and skin whiteness than old Southern grand dames even though some may be heavily naturally freckled. They consider freckles disgusting blemishes that need to be removed or covered up and if you search for Asian (or some subtype) freckles you will mostly find info on getting rid of them rather than people who have them.

e.g. Chinese herbal freckle removing cream--No side effect

www.tmcosmatic.com

The best place to find Asian freckles is among US born Asians, particularly half-Asians such as

Devon Aok

media-cache-ec4.pinterest.com

and Jassie James who in a recent twitpic does not have her freckles hidden under a layer of makeup.

pbs.twimg.com

(while Jassie is known as a freckled porn star it is damned hard to find a photo that shows her freckles)

oakleym82: not seeing these "freckles" that look anything like seagull shiat. she's actually pretty hot, and i think more freckles would make her hotter.

It's obvious that she's wearing very thick foundation.

Is it not obvious to you? Are you blind?

magicgoo: I have the stupid kind that are everywhere, but are all spaced apart. I think they're also known as stupid moles.

Moles and freckles are not the same thing. At all. Not even close. Freckles will not turn into cancer. Moles will. If you have a lot of moles make sure you go to a dermatologist and get a mole map. Makes the cancer easier to catch in the early stages.

Was not aware people who are half Asian were prone to freckles. Don't know a lot of half Asian people, but have never seen freckles on any of those I do know.Plus, myself and my brothers are half Asian, and none of us have freckles. A few annoying moles, but no freckles.

I like threads like this because Farkers always post photos of pretty redheads with freckles :-)

And though I'm not gay, I would like to point out that a redheaded guy can also be beautiful (you don't have to be gay to appreciate the beauty of someone of your own gender)

HempHead: magicgoo: So if freckles are so great, then why do Janeane Garofalo, Carrot Top, and Lindsay Lohan all try to cover their freckles with gobs of foundation? Well those are definitely three Nobel scholars. You should definitely follow thier examples.

kwame: ExperianScaresCthulhu: kwame: deamonbutterfly: "The Goths" made me giggle.. at 33, you get over a lables and just 'be' .

finding myself wanting that alabaster skin. yep. been there. still am. I am learning to embrace my abundance of freckles as I get older. Yes, I am a natural ginger, yes I dye my hair. Yes, I have curly hair, and yes I straighten it. We are taught from an early age to never like ourselves. We need to be like this girl, or that girl.. People blame the media for suicides of young, impressionable kids. To an extent maybe, I think they don't help at all, but it all comes back to parenting. or we can all just off ourselves. yah. seems more logical.

That whole comment kind of goes to sh*t with the understanding that you continue to dye and straighten your hair.

if black women can get away with the hypocrisy, so can she.

Troll someone else, sh*t-for-brains.

That is not a troll. Been to too many black sites where black women pull the 'it's just a style' card when it comes to talking about hair, weaves, extensions, wigs, dye, straightening, and blackness versus non-blackness.

Haven't you?

As I said, if black women can get away with the hypocrisy of 'I have great self esteem/I'm not trying to look like anyone else' while working awful hard to get rid of the tight brunette/black curls, well.. *shrug.jpg* daemonbutterfly can also embrace herself at the same time as dying and straightening herself.
