Apparently, the announcement that the pilot wouldn't go forward was only finalized officially today.

Good.  This was a misguided project from the start, as the only thing more unnecessary than a remake of
THE MUNSTERS would be a gritty drama ramake of THE MUNSTERS

Yeah, it was so shiatty, I thought that it was a one-off Halloween Special, and wasn't ever meant to be a series pilot or anything like that.

I kind of liked it, esp. Eddie Izzard's Grandpa (blood-bonding the neighbor to do odd chores around the house until he could harvest his heart was fun).  Jerry O'Connell as Herman was an odd choice, though.

That was my main problem with it. I liked that they didn't do the flathead makeup and platform shoes like Fred Gwynne's Herman, but Jerry O 'Connell has this boyish face that just didn't work for the character.

I really got a kick out of the framing of the shot where he makes his initial appearance, though:

It was a pretty good homage to the old makeup style.


I liked the show. Keeping in mind that pilots are generally pretty rough compared to the resulting series, I thought it showed a lot of promise. I just wish Bryan Fuller could get a show to stay on air. I thought he had finally managed it with Pushing Daisies, until the writers' strike screwed things up.

Obvious tag is still hungover from the holidays. Though, in this instance, the Hero tag may have also sufficed.

"Spiffy" was also acceptable.

You can see the pilot on Hulu (you might have to have Hulu Plus. Not sure.). I think it's a shame. I thought it showed a lot of promise. Definitely darker than the original.

It more closely resembled some of Silverberg's monster family stories. He did several Adam's Family-esque stories with a normal boy born into a family of vampires, werewolves and other critters, and how they loved their normal wee lad, despite his frailty and mortality. They were some of my favorites of his short stories. They had a dark tinge to them, and at the same time, they had a warmth to them as well that humanized said creatures of the night, and The Munsters was pretty much a knock off of the original Addam's Family which got rolling in the late '30s--though with more working class roots than the original.

I like that they tried, but The Munsters were a sitcom, albeit with monsters, and the crew tried to make it more into a mildly funny supernatural drama, and lo, the thread was lost.

Also, I think it's worth pointing out that The Munsters was a horrid little show catering to baby boomers in their early teenage years. It's basically the 60's version of Beavis & Butthead. The reboot was already done, and it's called Family Guy.

Actually, The Munsters was nothing more than Leave it to Beaver with the Universal Monsters.

Look at who Produced the Munsters and approved scripts.. Joe Connoly and Bob Mosher, who created Leave it to Beaver. Hell, all they had to do was take old Beaver scripts and add in some sight gags.

The Addams Family was better. And in the movie version, Christina Ricci was hot.

They also managed to cast Gomez perfectly. John Astin was great, but I actually enjoyed Raul Julia's performance even more than the original.
