NK is largly a cult. Much of what they do is simply to impress the locals, and scare the Japanese.

It would be fascinating to find out what is really in their heads, especially, say, the citizens with good enough standing to live in Pyongyang. I personally believe that their fervor is by and large a survival technique, but enough generations have gone by that what they see is all they have ever known. So, there's an off chance that they might believe every bit of it. I dunno, I feel like even if you're brainwashed, there has got to be at least a tiny bit of your humanity telling you "something ain't right".

There is a large, wide gulf between this launch and putting a viable nuclear warhead on the thing. There is another gulf WRT accuracy (hitting a target other than 'the Pacific ocean')

You're telling me. My Japanese relatives vote for SDP, a very NK-friendly political party. Back to South Korea. Whether South Korea would have a pro-USA president or an anti-USA president in power, the country will degenerate and turn into a rump state. The South Korean government and political system aren't designed to functionally sustain themselves in the long run. Ethnic nationalism and money are more important than democracy for any contemporary South Korean.

South Koreans live in the 21st century, but their political attitudes are still stuck in 1950s. You cannot functionally run a modern democratic and capitalist country when 90% of the people think very backwards when it comes to politics. But that's how I think. Here's the funny thought. The lack of decent political sense among South Koreans is one of the big reasons why you cannot see any reputable Korean-American political pundits in American television.

I say leave. Leave and see what they do. If SK wants us out we should leave, and if SK and NK want to get the gang back together, that is fine too. We have no right to prevent that if both countries want it.

Then, by leaving, we end up a country on the opposite side of the world with no clear way to strike at us, nor the will of the people to do so. If the future leader of unified korea wants to turn warmongery, it will be picking a country that isn't near us. It will also likely be pissing off China at that point too. I don't see China or Russia having any interest in working towards a world war. I'm sure China likes NK to be the crazy neighbor who draws all the attention, not the crazy neighbor who actually does stuff.
