Usually places like Office Max have disposal bins in front for printer ink cartridges and CFL lights. I'm sure there are a ton of other places. I'm finally making the switch over now that they fixed the light temperature and started advertising the Lumens, so I can tell how bright the bulb is supposed to be. We get silly rebates at Costco, in a deal with the local power company, which is pretty sweet, got about 16 packs of them for something like $20 or so. I don't have too much problem with them being dim anymore. They do brighten as they warm up, but they are pretty usable from the start.

I'd rather find out what to do with the new ones when they blow out. Let's see. I can't just toss them, because of their dangerous content. I have to take them somewhere... ahh. More money for Big Oil. Then, I have to recycle them at a store. More money for the store. even if turning them in is 'free', they get money for providing this 'service'. Then, more money because of special transport, more money because of extra personnel... anyone getting why they wanted to switch??

This step was completely unnecessary. We were on the way to LED lighting that is safer and easier to deal with. Florescent lighting was always more dangerous, so to follow that line of reasoning was just silly. But, it enabled some people to make much more money. So, it was implemented. Yay.

Or maybe they could keep the classic incandescents on the shelf? Why not give people options? I personally dont want the higher efficiency incandescents.

For every one of those items, I mentally added "only to end up in tiny dangerous shards when it so much as touches a solid object."

Jeez, my mom used to take an old frosted bulb, shove it in one of my dad's dark holey socks, and mend said socks. She could more easily see what she was doing that way.

As to those asking what to do with your burnt out CFLs as mentioned home depot recycled them as well as all Lowes theyres a big blue metal center at the side of every entrance for cfl blinds and batteries. Also just to point out one guy said the stores make money recycling them? Nope we actually pay to have them licked up as Hazmat we just do it as a service to our customers

NORMAL A-LAMP INCANDESCENT BULBS HAVE BEEN BANNED.

You cannot today go into a store in the US and buy a normal 100 watt incandescent light bulb. They're illegal to manufacture, they're illegal to import.

Not only that, but the higher efficiency incandescent bulbs that you can still buy are going to be banned by 2020 if the law doesn't change.
The only exemptions from the ban are "specialty" bulbs.

I usually just go to the other side of town and pull behind some house or building or even a van. I then get out my wrist slingshot. The CFL base makes a nice gripping point and is nicely weighted. I then have some fun launching them into some immigrants property. boom boom boom.

I used to just drop them from an overpass, but that can get dangerous. It's a lot harder to target immigrants. Not all of their cars look like Sanford and Son's truck.

Oh, and before you think I'm an anti-environment whacko, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the concept of the ban, I'd already changed over to CFLs everywhere they were practical before the ban even passed. I think LEDs will make good replacements for the rest of my incandescents in a few years when they manage to get the brightness up to acceptable levels and come up with some reasonably attractive LED candelabra bulbs. I hope the heat issue can be overcome, that's really what's holding it back right now.

But yeah, it's really a ban, and it's disingenuous to claim it isn't.
