This is my last post as I have to babysit a scifi chat on another site- Caviar is great on good crackers with neufchatel or cream cheese, as a light snack or appetizer. A little goes a long way, like 1/2 a tsp max per cracker. One can substitute sourdough mini- bauguettes for the cracks, but whole wheat really brings out the flavour, imho.

Animals don't feed on decomposing matter, except certain scavengers, which no human eats.  Plants leech nutrients out of soil; they can't survive if you just plant them in a pile of rotten scraps of droppings and dead animals.

I do not eat fungus, and I'm actually allergic to aquatic filter feeders like clams and oysters.

Anchovies are delicious. I've never tried caviar except for those orange fish eggs that I occasionally get in sushi which I don't think count as caviar.

Most people who like caviar only do so because it makes them feel sophisticated it has nothing to do about taste.

Most things sold by the ounce can vary wildly in quality.

This article is wrong. It's not expensive because it's harvested by hand. It's expensive, at least Russian & Co. caviar, because the Russian government has an artificial scarcity policy in place. When I lived there as a kid we used to eat it regularly, and we were poor.

Cod roe is perfectly good, and there are excellent, cheap Scandinavian sources for it (plus Ikea carries some, if you have one near you). Sure, it comes in a tube, but it's tasty, and that's what matters.
