The best sketch of the year was Maine Justice.

2012-12-28 09:56:38 AM
if you put all those together in the same episode it would almost be not quite awful

2012-12-28 10:00:36 AM
Were each of those sketches followed by "The Californians" when they aired, or is that just a Hulu thing?

2012-12-28 10:00:49 AM
Wait, I thought all the cool kids claimed that they didn't watch SNL anymore since something like '82... Can someone explain this?

Puppets and Lazy Sunday were the only two I enjoyed on their list.

Wasn't there another Stefon this year?

That puppets sketch is absolutely great. Not sure how that was behind three others.

I don't think "Entertainment Weekly" or the denizens of the "Enterntainment" tab qualify as "cool kids".

SNL sucks ass. It pretty much always has. What's the ratio of funny/awful on that show? 1/30?

2012-12-28 10:27:37 AM
No Royal OB/GYN, list fails.

/ "The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party" is much funnier than it has any right to be.
// "Undecided Voter" is basically just any given thread from the Politics tab prior to Election Day

Mikey1969: Wait, I thought all the cool kids old geezers claimed that they didn't watch SNL anymore since something like '82... Can someone explain this?

FTFY.

Just admit it, everyone. SNL has gotten considerably better in recent years than it ever did in the 70s, 80s, etc. It's more polished, better organized, more effort is put into the writings, the casting's gotten better... The mind just has a way of remembering long-ago things much more positively than they actually were, and suppressing the unfavorable things from memory. Just watch those old SNL skits now, they have NOT aged well.

It's the same Fark phenomenon with the Simpsons, and how Trekkies think those god-awful 1980s and 1990s Star Trek movies are WAY better than JJ Abrams' reboot.

SNL is watched by the cool kids while they are 17-25. That's why SNL has been on for so long. You can figure out someone age by what they think is the best SNL skits or who there favorite SNL actors were. For example SNL was the best ever during Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Kevin Nealon, Chris Farley, Tim Meadows, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, David Spade and Julia Sweeney era.

Anyone that can watch the "Real Houswives of Disney" and not laugh is a coal-hearted grump.

This is a good era for SNL; they've gotten out of the "beat every one-joke sketch into a seven-minute dud" habit and it really has improved things. That was always the biggest weakness, I felt, and their pre-recorded spoofs of TV shows and commercials address that.

I really enjoyed that one.

Glad the girl you wish you never started talking to at a party made the list.

Maine justice was awesome too.

I have to admit, I've watched zero SNL from 2012.

I have, however, watched that "The Rock Obama" skit a bunch.

Loser. The best era was Dana Carvey, Nora Dunn, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Victoria Jackson, Jon Lovitz, Dennis MIller, Kevin Nealon, featuring Al Franken, A Whitney Brown...(I still actually hear this in Don Pardo's voice)...in the mid to late 80's. I was 17-25 from 1991-1999, but started watching at a much earlier age under a single parent's roof.
I missed a lot of the live airings of the Myers/Farley/Sandler/Carvey/Schneider cast because I was terribly stinking drunk in the woods, at a party, or at a bar through much of that time.
They've had some lean shows, even some bad years in between, but for the most part they've had some fantastic casts and individuals. What I can never understand is how they can be so great when it's good, but every week some sketches are so, so terrible. I'd be willing to bet the people up close and invested in comedy take those terrible sketches and say "Wow, that would have been amazing if Fallon wasn't laughing" or somesuch of a minor tweak.

2012-12-28 02:40:30 PM
Cecily Strong's "The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party" is altogether funny, but her placement of "Can I just use the N-Word" is amazingly timed.
Also, perhaps you're noticing a trend in female cast members. I don't think we'll be seeing another Rachel Dratch anytime soon, and that is a bad thing. I mostly blame Melanie Hutsell.

I may have to agree with this. I was so confused and it was still funny, then when they revealed it, it was even better.

The Seth McFarland skit with the puppets was priceless too, thx to Hader.

He explained in a news article the week after that skit premiered the background and history of the sloppy swish. Pretty good stuff. If I can find it I will link it.
