I am not one of said people.  Hell, I wouldn't have a problem if they went back further to the old headdress Brave logo even.

Random aside, since they mentioned the team in TFA: The Redskins, many people do not know, were named for the Boston Braves (yes, these same Braves, 80 years and two cities ago).  However, their first year went piss-poorly (as did most of their years before George Allen), and they weren't drawing well in the gigantic Braves Field (it held 40,000 with almost no outfield seating).  So they decided to move to the smaller Fenway Park, and change the nickname (since they weren't playing at the home of the Braves anymore).  Since they were moving to the home of the Red Sox, and their coach was supposed to be part Lakota, they decided on Redskins to keep with the Native American theme for their coach and use the Red from Red Sox in the process.

Taking offense at something like this is pointless. It just makes the offended party more ridiculous.

So American Indians, you'll get over it.

People should have a problem with the tard who sits in the first row by the right field foul pole every game. Dumbass dresses up in full homemade Indian outfit for every damn game.

Part of me wants to talk about why I have a problem with this.

The Mets fan in me wants the Braves to wear as much gear as possible from a 23 year stretch where they made the playoffs twice and were over .500 six times.

CSB time:

I once rose the Marta train home beside this guy. This has been quite a few years ago. I saw him sit down with his ridiculous drum and figured that the conversation would be kind of interesting. He OBVIOUSLY doesn't take himself too seriously, right? Wrong. The dude was one of the weirdest, most awkward people I've ever met. He wouldn't even look directly at us when he was talking. The man knew more about Braves stats than any other living human I've met, however.

I don't remember where I read this, but apparently Lone Star Dietz (the coach you referenced) may have made up his Native American heritage when he was coaching the Redskins.

Also, interestingly enough, the Redskins didn't use a native american in their logo until much later in their history, when George Preston Marshall got a letter from a native american saying the Redskins didn't 'own' the people they claim to honor enough. I'm a huge Redskins fan but well aware that Marshall was a complete racist, so its hard to tell whether he was really trying to do the right thing, or just using it as an excuse to revamp the logo.

I had the same experience this season. It seemed that making conversation was just painful for him. I'm fairly introverted myself, so I had some sympathy, but why wear the crazy outfit if you don't want the attention? Regardless he had some awesome stories, The Braves take him along with the team on a road trip every year, he knows a lot about the bullpen guys because of his seats in right field, he even takes Peter Moylan's old glove to every game. And I mean EVERY game. His favorite statistic is that he has been to more games at Turner Field than Chipper Jones has.

And from what I recall, the Boston Braves took their name off of what people from Tammany Hall were calling themselves.

So, yeah, not any sort of help whatsoever there. You either have Native American racism or you have a legacy endorsement of the most corrupt institution in American history.

2012-12-28 03:18:08 AM
why even do this? I am a Braves fan and could care less about batting practice hats so why even go back to something that is even mildly offensive to some considering they have gotten away from using the offensive images since 1989? Strange.

Actually, "Irish" only got to be "white" after they had enough numbers in the US to be a political force. Even a century ago, you were effective considered negroid. The jutting chin and high forehead of that little logo comes from 19th century caricatures meant to identify Irish with Africans, cavemen, and/or apes, not whites. Or to be more blunt: that isn't a white man caricature because you ain't white - nor an American with your Papist demon-worship.

/Family is so English on both sides it hurts
//God gave you Irish a chance to serve the good of humanity by dying off in the 1840s - instead you invaded His Chosen Land of America and infected it
///Go back to your island, bog-boy, and leave America to real men
////Nah, not really - but if the movement of Irish, Italians, and Slavs has any validity, people of African descent will be considered "white" if they can get about 4 more percentage points of US population

It's not even the American Indians who are offended. Ninety percent of them don't even mind the Redskin's name, which is usually considered to be the most offensive of sport team names. Link.

It's not the small number of American Indians who are offended that are causing changes, it's the usual folks who are always looking for someone to fight for, whether they want the "help" or not.

Back in the '90s, when the Indians had their playoff run, I'd see teenage boys working the valet parking operation at an Indian casino in Florida wearing Chief Wahoo caps, so they apparently had no problem with it, nor did casino management.

Well the people that made the mascot for Notre Dame WERE a bunch of fighting Irish, that's the difference. Personally, the only offensive team name is the Redskins (bolstered by the history of racism in the old Redskins organization) and the only offensive logo is the Cleveland Indians (it's a bit much). The rest of the teams named after Native Americans seem to be showing respect.

Leave the mascots alone they are not hurting anything. American Indians have enough problems(of their own making) that offensive mascots are the least of their problems

As a Phillies fan I believe the Braves should be severely punished for this -- the team should be disbanded and their players scattered to the winds...as long as said winds bring Prado, Heyward and, eh, why not, McCann to Philadelphia. It's the only way to start the healing.

Or, the logo could just be Chipper Jones getting the shocker from Dale Murphy.

Just to get things straight:

Redskins: offensive name, cool logo
Indians: OK name, offensive logo
Braves: cool name and logo, offensive old logo (and it's Atlanta, so they're not getting any benefits of doubt when it comes to racial issues)

Pretty sure the Indians removed Chief Wahoo from their caps and uniforms. I have never been to the stadium so I dont know if he is still there.

I wish we could have a team named the Gorillas but that just invites too many problems but what an intimidating mental image/badass name.

Don't worry, you can sign McCann next year if you want. 2013 is probably his last year in Atlanta.

I've wanted Prado to get a contract since 2008 or so....I'm assuming they will do something stupid and think he's far too expensive sometime in the near future.

Prado needs a long term deal. As does Jay-Hey, Freeman and Medlin.

The cap offends me because it reminds me of when the Braves were horrendous.

I'm not killing myself over this, but why stick to a racially provocative name or logo when there is anything else you can use?

It is offensive.
