I used to like archery on occasion as a kid, and my parents had their own bows from back in the day. But it's been 3 decades since I've touched a bow.. don't know where I could go to shoot these days.

Used to teach archery at Scout camp back in the day. Haven't shot in years, but I'd love to get back to into it.

Now I'm worried that some asshat politician is going to see this trend and want to regulate bows and crossbows in some misguided attempt at "public safety".

The fence in my backyard is high enough that nobody notices. Also, I'm using old recurves so I'm not in much danger of punching through the fence with an errant shot,

AverageAmericanGuy: I expect we'll see a return to hand-to-hand combat with knives as weapons.

That does seem most likely.  A distant alternative would be throwing knives, sticks or staves.

Guns are probably going to take a back seat for a while, for obvious reasons.  And improvised weapons out of household objects, while still cool, was burned out by all those retarded Bourne movies.

Poppa Kritter hunted with long bow he made himself. The man didn't know much of football or baseball (his Dad died when he was a wee lad growing up pre-Depression) but he was one creative, artistic craftsman type. And a drinker beyond compare.

They should go staves for 2013 movie-weapon-du-jour.  1d6, can trip opponent, can threaten a larger area.  Throwing knives are 1d4 and can be wasted once thrown.

I did find it funny there was no mention of Arrow in the entire article. Probably since it goes against the whole thing since the character's been running around CW for years now, this is just now a different show with a darker take.

idk, if a person goes on a mass murdering spree with nothing more than a crossbow you kind of have to just let them go based on the skill alone. One can't help but think "Wow, that's pretty badass"

It's mentioned under "Story Highlights." But come on, CW dramas are never what they're ostensibly about -- they're about shots of sexy women and men with hard abs.

Archery was the best part of boy scout camp back in the day. I saw an arrow splinter as it was being shot (by someone else, not me) and go in and out again of the skin between his thumb and forefinger. The guy's reaction was priceless. It was more "well, I do say, mighty inconvenient" than panic or pain. He walked up to the range guy and very calmly held up his hand with partially splintered arrow comically attatched said he thought he should probably go to the aid station.

Interesting - the SCA events I've attended for the last 20 years, on and off, have pretty much indicated that archery was fairly popular (sure, with a subculture, but still...) long before Katniss reared her infeasible head. I shoot on occasion (not often enough, really) at events, just to stay in practice.

And that's why we have arrow rests. Happens more often than I care to think about, honestly, especially with borrowed equipment - arrows are rated for the poundage of the bow, and watching some chucklehead use a 30# arrow on his 60# longbow to show off, only to have it friggin' explode on release, is priceless.

Actually, over the past few years NC *relaxed* restrictions on crossbows. In 2010 they repealed a law restricting crossbow to disabled hunters. In 2011 they repealed a law requiring a pistol permit to buy a crossbow.

Crudbucket: StoPPeRmobile: Crudbucket: fusillade762: Crudbucket: HotWingAgenda: AverageAmericanGuy: I expect we'll see a return to hand-to-hand combat with knives as weapons.

That does seem most likely.  A distant alternative would be throwing knives, sticks or staves.

Jgok: Actually, over the past few years NC *relaxed* restrictions on crossbows. In 2010 they repealed a law restricting crossbow to disabled hunters. In 2011 they repealed a law requiring a pistol permit to buy a crossbow.

North Carolina: if it exists, there's a law against it

There's a name for "gentlemanly combat". It's all about stuff like that, and fighting with umbrellas and walking canes. It's called Bartitsu. There's some gym in Chicago that has started teaching it. I guess it gained in popularity way back when due to Sherlock Holmes using it in his stories.

I could see it making some kind of comeback if the Sherlock Holmes movies weren't explosion-a-riffic movies, since it's more like Bartitsu kind of reminds me of what Victorian Parkour would be like; efficient ways to disarm villains and evil-doers with what you have.
