marius2: UNC_Samurai: Slaxl: Books are the worst, lately it seems there doesn't exist a book that isn't "Main Title: An inspiring sounding subtitle".

In history academia, it's pretty much essential. You come up with a title that is relevant to your work but also catchy, then a subtitle that explains the nature of your research.

This.

All my papers are titled something catchy, usually with a pun because I'm frustrating like that. Then I add a subtitle which explains what my paper is actually about. Gotta catch them first before they realize how boring the read will be.

I decided to not pursue a second career in sociology when I saw I would have to do this.

Srsly academia, quit with the painful attempts at wit. If you were funny you would have become authors or journalists or comedians.

Nonfiction uses this a lot, but it's often out of necessity if they want to sell.  The title just isn't enough explanation to hook people that may be interested in the content.

Just drop the Star Trek part. The previous films would kind of sound cooler ...

Star Trek *
The Wrath of Khan
The Search for Spock
The Voyage Home
The Final Frontier
The Undiscovered Country
Generations
Insurrection
Nemesis

(* just The Motion Picture is a bit vague)
No one going to the theater is going to ask for a ticket by saying the entire name of the film - there's only one Star Trek (or other franchise/sequel) movie playing at a time, so there won't be any confusion. Just name it whatever comes after the colon and leave it at that.

Anything that tricks people into seeing The Final Frontier, Generations, Insurrection or Nemesis should be outlawed.

I love this idea. The only question is what to call the 2009 movie if Star Trek: The Motion Picture is cut to just plain Star Trek.

Surprised to see that no one has pointed out that the premise of the article is wrong outright. Into Darkness isn't the first colon less Trek movie; they were Star Trek Generations and Star Trek Nemesis, rather than Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: Nemesis. They really should do their research before writing articles...

Thing is, it's an article from one of the prime Canadian newspapers... I'd expect more from them than your standard Internet blog. I'm also disappointed in my fellow Trek fans for not pointing it out as well.

I might be really wrong, but i think there was a movie called First Contact other than ST:FC so an exception might have to be made there.

They should call the one after this The Next Star Trek.

There's really no issue with movies sharing the same title. They do it all the time:

I think The Avengers might count, but I'm not sure if the new movie is officially called "Marvel's The Avengers" or just "The Avengers"

The Hole is one that bugs me. The Thora Birch film is great. The others... Well...

Also, I can't wait until someone makes a movie called "Breakin'" that has nothing to do with breakdancing. That will be fun.
