Every Saturday, or at least most of them for the last couple of years, I do the following ritual.

1. Make an enormous cup of coffee.
2. Turn on CarTalk on NPR.
3. Look through the Caturday thread.

I honestly wish I could figure out how to post my cat online, Emma. You have all given me good advice whenever I've asked for it. And the constant pictures make me smile.

I just wanted to say that I'm glad you all have gathered here. It makes for a great start to my weekend. I wish you all the best for the New Year, and may God have mercy on your cute little cat-loving souls.

Lying wrapped up in a blanket on the sofa in front if the fire, kitty stretched out on the floor warming his belleh, looking out the window at the snow gently falling while reading a book - is there a better way to spend a Caturday afternoon?

I made a Birthday Cake for anyone that might need one this week.
It is red velvet and french vanilla checkerboard with cream cheese icing.
Also some meringue mushrooms just because.

And a small dog, I cannot remember his name but he seemed happy with the last minute sweater I knitted for the vicious little beast. It was chilly here on Christmas day.

*Brofist.* (Sisfist? No, that sounds wrong.) This is why when I have days when I feel like ten pounds of sh*t in a five pound bag and am depressed off of my ass I tell myself to shut up, because if someone can go through everything that you have and still be positive and have a bright outlook on life, I've got no room at all to b*tch. :)

So much this. I spent most of 2012 in a deep, dark funk (not taking my thyroid meds routinely didn't help much, TBH), and things are finally looking up for me and the hubby. *Fingers crossed* that they continue to go up and we can finally get on with our lives and not live paycheck to paycheck!

For christmas I got a new kitty. I got to pick her out and bring her home today. She's super cute and really fluffy (Pictures soon!) the only problem is we are having a really difficult time introducing the new kitty to the little girl we already have. We've been keeping the new kitty (for now named nubs) in a separate room with all of the essentials. But any time we get near our other cat (Josephine) she hisses and growls at us because we smell like Nubs. I know that the introduction will take time and eventually they will be best buds, but it's pretty tense in the house right now. If anyone has any suggestions to make the transition a little easier I would LOVE some advice!

what I did was I took a shirt from laundry I hadn't washed yet, rubbed it over Ben Hurr then rubbed it all over Gremlin then back and forth a couple of times. It helped calm Benner's down as he was the first to come home before Gremlin.
I had to repeat it when Gremlin got his "snip" done too...
something about getting the same smell on each other or something...worth a shot if you don't mind too much bloodshed?

NOT willing to give up on Christmas yet! I can't believe tomorrow is New Years Eve...nooo, holidays! Staaaaay!

Oh how nice! I keep my decs up til 12th night. Not only am I lazy, but I really enjoy the lights.

One year we left our lights up until July. We were going to take them down but a lady stopped out front when I was filling the bird feeders and told me that if they were out at night with their little son in the car they had to go past our house so he could see the lights again. The lights stayed up all year that year.

Treat

Snuggled down by my feet,
I feel your purr, a rare treat.

I still remember how we met.
Would not have taken you on a bet.
Yet upon me you were set.

You gazed up at me and cried,
I wanted to turn away, I tried.
Your wails made me teary eyed.

The rain came down, turned to sleet.
At my very doorstep you did greet.
I sighed, knew that I was beat.

I took you in,
Swear I saw you grin.
Anything to silence the din.

Toweled you dry,
Felt you sigh.
We'll get by.

As every cat knows,
Day by day our love grows,
Seeds of kindness sows.

Until the day you breathe your last,
And we remember all our past.
How together our fates were cast.

How bleak our lives would have been,
If we had but seen,

And left,
Unaided.

Well, you do know these things take time right? How about if you handle kitten with gloves on for now, and then take the gloves off..toss them casually on the floor for your other kitteh to sniff...when they are off you they become neutral territory. Also try rubbing both kittehs with a wee bit of your perfume. That way they will smell the same...sneaky I know, but if it works for guinea pigs, it should work for kittehs..(male gpigs can sometimes be wicked mean to a newbie male.)

Don't neglect Josephine for new kitten, that can cause jealousy.  Snuggle a bit with new kitten, then try spending quality time with Josephine with her favorite treat or some catnip if it makes her mellow.

If possible create a situation where Josephine and new kitten can smell each other when they want, you will need to have them separated and where new kitten can feel safe and comfortable.

Another idea is to swap territories from time to time, maybe have Josephine in most of house during the day, then for an hour or two put her in new kitten's room and let new kitten explore.

Last kitten we integrated was kept in a bedroom for about a week, then allowed out with the others under supervision for a few weeks before getting the run of the house.

Basically, just let the two get used to each other at their own pace.

lillyspad, That little moving picture of the horse jumping the car triggered some old memory's. Way back in the 70's, when I was still in 4-H, some moron took a Seattle mounted officers ride. He galloped down the city streets, tried to jump a car and failed. The horse was badly cut. I recall all the horse owners in the area taking their horse in to donate blood for the injured mount. That was the first I had heard of transfusions for horses. In the end the horse recovered but had to be retired as he was too skittish to work police duty anymore. The dude ranch I volunteered at was owned by the City and we had a few retired mounts and a reject or two. I never got to meet the horse that was injured as he went to a private home for his retirement. Some of his stablemates that I met on the ranch were interesting to say the least.

Yikes, over 750 comments already? I'll catch up some time tomorrow! Still recovering from the trip to the mountains. Got there on Monday with snow almost waist-deep on me, and I'm 5'7. Took damn near an hour to unload the car because the road to the cabin was unplowed and we had to trudge our own, fresh path a good 1/4 or more of a mile to the cabin and back. Got another foot and a half of snow on Wednesday and had trouble with the car's chains at first, needing a new set that we couldn't get for another three days. Oh, and the temperature dropped to -6 on Thursday night/Friday morning. Gah! No offense, but you lot who live in deep-snow country can keep it! I'll happily live in the Central Valley with our temperate, rainy winters and warm, sunny summers. Much, MUCH less energy and effort to keep everything working. I'm lazy like that. :P

Very pretty there, though. Once I was indoors with a fire and a hot cup of tea! Came home on Friday, and I consider the whole thing a nice vacation and a fun adventure overall.

sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net

And the reference shot the hubby took on Monday or Tuesday before we got even MORE snow, standing on the deck. As I said, I'm tall, so this was surprisingly deep. And fluffy. Hurray for dry, light snow, instead of that damp, slushy crap.

sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net

Already a good update, actually: he was puking once a day after eating. We switched from dry food to canned food (with added water mixed in) and he didn't puke at all. Pretty cool actually.

Unfortunately there's no way to stop this disease, but anything to make kitty more comfortable is great in my book.

I think by switching foods you have lessened the stress on the kidneys.. might slow down the progression of the disease..

Keep adding (warm) water to the wet food (each time he walks away from it), it will help keep kitty hydrated and possibly reduce the need for sub-q fluids (plus the warm water will bring out the smell, and encourage him to eat more). And since we both have a 16 1/2 y/o cat with the same condition, please PLEASE check out AZODYL - a sorta homeopathic/holistic remedy that my sainted vet put Dragon on 4 months ago - I have no idea if it is the reason why he is doing so well, but as far as I'm concerned, it ain't hurting. Feel free to check with your vet, but since it does not require an RX, you can order it from here - http://www.medi-vet.com/prod-Azodyl,_90_Capsules-5806.aspx
Feel free to email me (my login @ gmail .com) if I can be of any further help, or if you just need someone to commiserate with :o)

Hi guys!
Went out and got a little xmas gift for myself today.

I go in to do the paperwork and pick it up Monday.
I have until then to decide if I want the black or beige leather interior.

It's funny, I've lost count of the cars I've bought but I still get that 'little kid on Christmas eve' feeling every time.

Hahahaha!!!

Ok..I can appreciate my own sick sense of humour to laugh at myself and openly share the thought that just struck me.
I was looking at pics of Ben Hurr and when I lost him the vet was kind enough to get his paw prints done for me in a nice little plaque with his name and everything...
I just had the sudden thought "Oh my god...I need to go to storage - I left Ben Hurr in there!"
*facepalm*

Jesus Farking Christ: Every Saturday, or at least most of them for the last couple of years, I do the following ritual.

That makes me happy to hear when someone enjoys coming to Caturday to watch some of us make asses of ourselves. Or just me. Maybe that's only me...
I have to say the funniest postings I have seen have been in here -  some gentlemen here are too damn funny for my own good.
Oh...hmmm maybe you could send a picture of Emma to someone and they could post her for you? Everyone loves getting to see everyone elses kittehs :3

It started snowing here in Indy this evening around 10PM.
It's a city that's full of monuments. Lots of monuments.
There's one called "The Soldiers and Sailors Monument", right in the center of downtown.
Indy residents simply call it "The Circle".

Every year since about 1960, it gets decorated with lights as "The Worlds Tallest Christmas Tree".
They turn the lights on the evening of the Friday after Thanksgiving.
I haven't been able to do much shooting this year, but I wanted to get some shots of
the Circle while it was lit and snow was falling.

While downtown Indy has a busy nightlife, it also has a certain degree of criminal element.
Walking around downtown, after 10PM, with an expensive camera that takes good pictures
is questionable judgement at best. So, I shot all my pictures out the drivers window while driving
around to shoot it from all directions..

Here's one...

reneau.smugmug.com

f/2.8, ISO 1600, 1/100 sec, handheld

If I get another chance to shoot it before they take down the lights, I may see if a
ham radio friend that's also a policeman would be interested in playing bodyguard
while I shoot them the *proper* way.

Hubby made the appointment yesterday for today, it was what they had available.  I have an "official" lab appointment of 8:40am Monday, but they said they open at 8:00am, show up and they might be able to get me in earlier.  And come back in two weeks is much better than getting called a week later and told cholesterol is a bit high, take fish oil and come back in six months when I'm coming in for low energy.  About a week or two after that, I'm having less energy than before.  Just about everyone, including (I feel) the new Dr. seems to think I have untreated depression.  I just think it's weird that I can have several symptoms of depression without being, well... depressed for extended periods.  Yes, I will sometimes cry for little reason for several hours, but I don't feel like I'm sad for weeks on end.  And so many of the symptoms just fit for low adrenal function.  Not two or three out of a bunch, but most to nearly all are a match for either just adrenal or adrenal with another gland thrown in.

Thanks for letting me ramble.

I wouldn't jump the shark and just think it's depression - that's usually the last thing I tend to think of since I've been living the "healthcare worlds wet dream" of everythingthatcanpossiblybewronginabodyisandthensome.
At this point I feel like I should just say a mighty FU to every one of the healthcare "professionals" and just become a doctor my damn self haha ...hmm...
Symptoms like that could be something as "mainstream" as thyroid issues, to like you mused before hormonal imbalances or it could actually be something to really look at - heart health, and nerves that are being pinched somewhere, a knock to the head....
None of what you describe sounds good, but I always err on the side of caution and have learned to look in every possible direction and then go all balls out and look randomly. That's how we've found my other two c's and other non-invited partiers up in this husk.
/and it's not rambling. Not at all.
//you can also email me anytime, I'm always up for it :)

My depression manifested as physical illness, lack of focus, too much sleep and lack of energy.I thought I had chronic fatigue syndrome or really messed up glucose since I recognized some of the lethargy from hypoglycemia. I am a really optimistic and happy person, so the diagnosis really surprised me. However, I was thrilled because it was the correct diagnosis and antidepressants brought me back to myself! If they put you on an antidepressant to test this diagnosis, you might look into the ones that are targeted to the physical symptoms (through  norepinephrine , I think) and not just the serotonin transmitters.

I just hope you can figure out why you're feeling so lousy and make 2013 your "comeback" year!

Debby7813: Marisyana: Debby7813: Marisyana: In an hour my husband's going to be at the vet with our oldest male cat Sebastian, a/k/a the Beast, to find out if he had a stroke or not.  He's fifteen, he's been walking in circles and staggering and he's been hiding, which he's never done.  I made sure to spend time with him before I had to go to work toda just in case of the worst.  He was my cat before I met my husband, so I have to make the final decision remotely.  I was hoping I had a picture of him on me but I don't.  This sucks.  :(

Try not to jump to the worst conclusion. I came home to a very similar situation with my Dinah years ago, and it turned out that she had an inner ear infection. She walked with her head tilted for months even after she was better. Keep good thoughts!

Well, I just heard from the vet, and it wasn't what I expected to hear--apparently he's almost completely blind.  One of his retinas is detached and he had a small hemmorhage in the other eye, and the vet said that the detached retina can happen suddenly.  They're running lab work that hopefully will turn up something, but the vet seemed pretty optimistic that whatever it is isn't fatal and that medication should help.  As far as his vision, now what was happening makes sense--he was hiding in places headfirst (the light was hurting his eyes), he came to me because he knows my voice, and he was circling as his own form of radar to figure out where things were.  We can adapt to that.

Well, I can relate to that situation, too. My Bonnie is mostly blind, starting about 6 years ago or so. It turned out that she had hyperthyroidism. One of the symptoms is high blood pressure, which can affect the blood vessels of the eye. She gets along well with a dose of methamazole (there are other, similar meds). He should do well; just don't rearrange the furniture. Good luck!

[i235.photobucket.com image 500x333]

///nmc, nmc

He's had hugely dilated pupils for a long time so I think his vision has been an issue for a while, and the vet also thinks it's hyperthyroidism.  The one thing that concerns me is making sure he gets enough food.  He's never been a big cat to begin with--at his highest weight he was just under eight pounds, now he's 5.5 pounds.  Then again, it's hard to eat when you can't find the food dish.  We're going to start giving him morning and evening food (we have eight other cats so he can use the usual dry food as snacks) and hopefully that will bring his weight up.  We won't have the blood work results until next week but as I said before the vet thinks it's something that can be controlled.  Yay for my Beast!

Good to hear that he is manageable, my old Maynerd was nearly blind and deaf when she went to the bridge at age 19. The only thing that really worked near the end was her nose. The kids would open a can of tuna and wave it near her when she was sleeping just to see her jump up and beg for some juice from the can. She was a good old kitty, our Maynerd.

& ah yiss, the Adoption Tale threatened/promised. Plumbicon's cousin Fred & lady wife Holly up near Cleveland (Richfield actually) were adopted in July of this year when a grey tabby stray began sleeping under their bushes. Abiout the time they began feeding her they found 1) she has one blue & one green eye & 2) she was verrry pregnant. Shortly there were 5 cats there, not exactly what they had in mind. Homes for 2 kittens were found, which leaves mom Greta (now spayed), daughter Mia (small version of Greta) & son Max (tuxie). There'd never been kittens nor more than one cat there before, & not since ~2007. Mia & Max are now 5 months old, so no tree (sent them link for Cats & Trees thread). Both furkids'll be fixed in ~a month.  Told them about Sake' & Scampi, that they may not wish to wait quite that long.
Fred's the one who came up with term creamsicle for orange & white.
Not able to get under this to type either. Leapt out at me from imgur Virals grid yesterday, killawhaletank titled this These showed up on my deck yesterday morning. & aye, they do seem to be bob-kittens. Behind glass is surely safest place to be, cute tho they are; with sharp fangs & claws!

I enjoyed seeing her cat Tabby again. She was quite affectionate, sitting in laps, purring..evidently the treatment for her CRF is working well. She seems very perky.

And Eli was tremendously glad to see us. He was napping with hubby, and looking too cute...now he is on my lap, rubbing the ipad...
