I reckon them PETA folks would poop themselves if they ever found out that roadkill can mean "killed on the road about twenty minutes ago (with a 12 gauge)".

Something about terrifying a small animal for a few hours for the entertainment of a town doesn't feel right to me, anyway.

I just watched that episode on iTunes this morning.

The only think I like talking about more than how much I hate PETA is how much I hate Westboro Baptist Church.  All of this negative attention is really sticking it to them!

Toots and the Maytals digusted and confused.

/Tangential association, but not remotely obscure

During past drops, the possum was suspended in a see-through box covered with tinsel and lowered to the ground at midnight.
Well, if it was tied up by one leg and freaking out, twisting and contorting his body on the way down I could see some protest PETA, and a few lulz.

Have you ever encountered a wild possum up close & personal?
Those biatches are like fur-covered chainsaws and they fear NOTHING.

That is what I was thinking.

I can just imagine the scene. A bunch of drunk hillbillies in the town square standing around a hootin and a hollerin, shooting off guns in the air while the opossum is lowered to the ground.

Well, the skunk drop certainly didn't work too well, so possum was the natural second choice.

Yeah that skunk drop turned into a big stinker.

At first i thought they were taking a possum and dropping him off a ledge, which would be pretty cruel, but after reading the article i don't see what the big deal is. they are putting it in a see through box and lowering it to the ground slowly.

if they are going to protest this, Shouldn't they also be protesting every time a person brings their dog on a glass elevator?

/They protest everything, so they probably do.

//My high school got a letter from PETA protesting our school mascot:the packers (as in meat packers, because there is a meat packing plant in town). They suggest we change it to "The pickers" (as in vegetable picking). A friend at the time pointed out that would probably get us in trouble with another group.

My thought, too.  3,000 customers for a lil ol country store?  Ain't no judge gonna stop it.

I have possums coming to my back yard every night, and if they see me they scurry away. Maybe we have pussy possums here. The fearless ones are the raccoons. If they see me, they continue on as if I wasn't there, unless I approach, in which case they kind of back away while growling.

I've been there for the drop; my parents live in the town. Not that many hillbillies; more folky, crafty people as there's a folk school that teaches crafts in the town. Possum wasn't wild; it was a pet/domesticated one borrowed from one of Clay's friends. It didn't stay in the lighted box all that long, and was basically raised slowly, held aloft for a few minutes, then lowered gently and put back in its familiar carrier.

PETA grumbles every single year, and every single year they find a way to hold the event. I'm betting that two ASPCA overseers and a federal judge wouldn't stop PETA from biatching.

Well, maybe if they didn't play dead all the time this wouldn't happen to them. Right?

Maybe they should think their little plan through next time.

10-12 years back PETA (or someone who claimed to be from PETA) called the Mayor's office of Talkeetna, Alaska demanding to know how high and on to what type of surface the moose are dropped at the annual "Moose Dropping Festival."

"500 feet onto concrete" they were told.

I like to think that caused some lamenting and hand-wringing in the PETA main offices before someone clued them in on what exactly a Moose Dropping Festival really is. ( i.e. Excuse to get drunk and throw moose poo out of a helicopter)

Since when did PETA actually care about animals?

As an owner of a pier-and-beam home, I say that opossums serve no purpose to the ecosystem, and should be wiped off the face of the earth.

Hey, guys. Let's put a wild animal in a box, surround it with flashing lights and screaming people, then hoist the box up high, and ... here's the awesome part: we lower the box! Because, fun!

I don't know if it's cruel. It is really stupid though.

I say they scoop up all the possum pancakes and throw them in the freezer for the year. Then, you take them all out and drop them off the highest building in town . Totally cruelty-free since it's hard to scare dead things, and it's more entertaining than a single live one in a clear box.
