super_grass: Honestly, I don't see an issue with this as long as it's applied consistently.

Rapists and child molesters are sick in the head, and now we have medical procedures to take care of the fact. Hell, we should do the same for violent criminals and sociopaths.

There are sick animals in this world, if we don't feel like putting them down we might as well neuter them mentally.

Yeah, I'd totally trust China to only do it to the worst of the worst and not anyone who's actually important and trying to contribute to humanity like political prisoners and human rights activists.

The first thing I thought of when I read this was the MASS use of "icepick" lobotomies in the early 20th century and late 19th. They really thought they had "The Cure™" for mental illness, across the board. Basically the lobotomy just severed the nerves that allowed you to experience emotions which were widely believed to be the cause of most mental illnesses. Then after the procedure you got someone back that had the personality of a table and the agreeability of a mirror. The first guy to really get it going was a real piece of crap. he had a personal record of 25 lobotomies in ONE day, with AN audience, OF COURSE! He performed thousands of these procedures in his life... What a piece of crap and now the Chinese are apparently trying to outdo this blemish on history by smothering it with with a cargo container of red paint...

I think they'll win this one in the long-run, although it isn't something to be proud of. Unless the entire world community really does get pissed off at them and threatens possible trade sanctions; which will only start to happen once everyone's OWN scientific communities and also larger international groups basically call-out the procedure for what it really is. Though sanctions are HIGHLY unlikely, that IS the only bad thing that could come out of this for China if somehow enough anger was generated by it. Plus the simple fact that this is very much most likely going to be a very probable human rights violation, that may need UN intervention one day--again IF there is enough sentiment. I'm guessing Russia AS USUAL (I really do want to give Russia the benefit of the doubt, that they would side with the correct stance--but, since this is "state affairs" and Russia doesn't like anyone poking around their country either, I highly doubt they'll side with the correct group even though their own scientists will most likely say the same thing...so they "save a little face") will take the 5th--and try to play it from both sides (something about a cake and eating it...).

That's my long version of what could happen. BUT, we could get lucky and the change could come from within and to be honest that would be by far the best solution for all. But, if this does continue we'll see if the world has the stomach to just let it slide by non-stop, while they do business with them as it continues under their noses.

vodka: MisterLoki: Protip: China sucks.

Throughout recorded history China has many times been on the cutting edge of technology. In fact they often have had the most advanced technology in the world. However, so far they seem to fail at taking advantage of it due to the stupidity of their government.

I've read that the lack of competing states that are both close in proximity and roughly equal in size and strength have allowed powerful Chinese governments the dubious luxury of abandoning technological advances when it suited them. In Europe, if one state, for example, decided to get rid of their navy because they didn't want ships anymore, the other European states would have obvious advantages. China didn't have a competitor like that until the British decided that yes, they would sell all the opium they liked and there wasn't anything China could do about it.

Think so? I'm no expert, but I'd hope that a fully developed adult brain would be able to learn these tasks a lot quicker than an underdeveloped brain of a child. Not sure though, but it is a good point to consider...

It's the opposite. The developing brain of a child is much, much better at learning then the developed/static brain of an adult.

DO YOU GUYS REALIZE HOW CHEAP AN OPIATE ADDICTION WOULD BE WITHOUT QUACKS IN THE WAY?

How's 50 cents a day strike you? Cigarettes are more expensive! But instead of realizing some people have more or less endogenous opioids then others.. we say fark it - let's torture them instead.

THERE IS NOTHING UNHEALTHY ABOUT OPIATE USE THROUGH QUALITY MEANS!.

/seriously, what the hell is up with wanting to torture unhappy people??????

Imagine a life where you are forced to continue living, but cannot experience pleasure or joy.

Sounds like one hell of a deterrent to me.

Apparently, it doesn't even do that.

At the same time, they report that more than half of the 60 patients had lasting side effects, including memory problems and loss of motivation. Within five years, 53% had relapsed and were addicted again to opiates, leaving 47% drug free.

So not only does it give you memory loss and destroy your pleasure and motivation--it also doesn't keep you from getting hooked on opiates about half the time. Which actually makes sense, because opiates don't only work on the pleasure center of the brain, they also act on the pain receptors in the body, an entirely different mechanism. Almost as though addiction was a complex behavioral and emotional issue, not just a matter of "feeling good."

My will to live was destroyed a long time ago. I do drugs to self-medicate my mental illness..
I also take prescription drugs to keep me sane. It's all in the balance, work/life/mental illness.
Sounds like I should be rounded up and shot by some of you.

pecosdave: it's particularly disturbing to see mind-altering ablations being performed in a country where citizens are essentially property of the state

You have to own something to mortgage it right? If you know the way our income tax system works in the US the government basically gets a loan from the federal reserve using the people as collateral. Are we not owned?

Depends. At least the terms of ownership are far less... severe.

No Time To Explain: I thought there was drugs that counteract how stimulants worked, thereby making a "meh, I'm over this" effect in the brain's pleasure centre

/unless I'm mistaken

Naltrexone used in conjunction with The Sinclair Method has a 75% success rate for alcoholism.

/it's not commonly used in the US because it discredits all the 12 Step nonsense by actually working because of Science! instead of Jesus

Now they use the Uighurs and Tibetans for that.

Didn't they do this in Serenity and kill an entire planet while a small percentage experimented on turn into some kinda psychotic murderous cannibals as a side-effect?

At the same time, however, damage to this region could also impair a person's ability to experience natural longings and other emotions, including joy.

No biggie. I'm guessing most patients are men, and men are supposed to be stoic and joyless. Especially in China.
