They used to make them organ donors. So this is a bit of an improvement.

Over here we call it Hip Hop music.

More refined than the lobotomies dictatorships used to give people, but the end result's about the same.

I thought there was drugs that counteract how stimulants worked, thereby making a "meh, I'm over this" effect in the brain's pleasure centre

/unless I'm mistaken
//also, this is new for China? I thought this was how they made everybody

Fluid: More refined than the lobotomies dictatorships used to give people, but the end result's about the same.

Was reading it and it sounded like a trans orbital lobotomy, which has been thoroughly discredited already. But this is just a summary and I'm not one of them fancy schmancy scientists or doctors so what do I know. It sure does sound like stuffing a sharp object into the brain and then just wiggling it around hoping for the right effect.

If removing part of the brain does not work, I suspect then they will remove most of the rest in a kinetic oblation.

Fark China!

At the same time, however, damage to this region could also impair a person's ability to experience natural longings and other emotions, including joy.

No biggie. I'm guessing most patients are men, and men are supposed to be stoic and joyless. Especially in China.

Honestly, I don't see an issue with this as long as it's applied consistently.

Rapists and child molesters are sick in the head, and now we have medical procedures to take care of the fact. Hell, we should do the same for violent criminals and sociopaths.

There are sick animals in this world, if we don't feel like putting them down we might as well neuter them mentally.

2012-12-27 08:43:32 PM
Yikes. Is that what they call partial lobotomies now?

2012-12-27 08:47:39 PM
Jesus. As as a Psych major this scares me. There are much better ways to treat addiction. Hell there are medication that can achieve the same results and stop once they stop being given.

Yeah, I'd totally trust China to only do it to the worst of the worst and not anyone who's actually important and trying to contribute to humanity like political prisoners and human rights activists.

Imagine a life where you are forced to continue living, but cannot experience pleasure or joy.

Sounds like one hell of a deterrent to me.

Didn't they do this in Serenity and kill an entire planet while a small percentage experimented on turn into some kinda psychotic murderous cannibals as a side-effect?

I remember an episode of House where some guy had some mental thing going on. Long and short, he volunteered to have a jolt of electricity run through his brain that would wipe all of his memories... I can't find out if such a thing is possible anywhere...but wouldn't that be wonderful? Destroy the sense of longing in the brain, and wipe the memory completely. You could in essance start a brand new life and leave all baggage behind. I'd love to do that. It sure would beat suicide.

A regular session of electroshock therapy can do that. Usually it's partial and temporary, and the memories come back, but not always.

Throughout recorded history China has many times been on the cutting edge of technology. In fact they often have had the most advanced technology in the world. However, so far they seem to fail at taking advantage of it due to the stupidity of their government.

Well, when we have complete memory wipe down to a science...I bet there will be people lining up to get rid of their old lives and try again.

Naltrexone used in conjunction with The Sinclair Method has a 75% success rate for alcoholism.

/it's not commonly used in the US because it discredits all the 12 Step nonsense by actually working because of Science! instead of Jesus

Yeah, it also kinda reminded me of that Pax drug and the creation of the Reavers in Serenity.

That and nerve stapling from Alpha Centauri.

So, all the bases have been touched from here.

That and it get rid of all pleasure while in use. So there is that little side effect.

it's particularly disturbing to see mind-altering ablations being performed in a country where citizens are essentially property of the state

You have to own something to mortgage it right? If you know the way our income tax system works in the US the government basically gets a loan from the federal reserve using the people as collateral. Are we not owned?

Depends. At least the terms of ownership are far less... severe.

My will to live was destroyed a long time ago. I do drugs to self-medicate my mental illness..
I also take prescription drugs to keep me sane. It's all in the balance, work/life/mental illness.
Sounds like I should be rounded up and shot by some of you.

you could learn how to walk, talk, and go to the toilet by yourself, then learn to read and write and by the time you were 20 years older it would be like you had just graduated from college. Except you would be in a feeble body.

Apparently, it doesn't even do that.

At the same time, they report that more than half of the 60 patients had lasting side effects, including memory problems and loss of motivation. Within five years, 53% had relapsed and were addicted again to opiates, leaving 47% drug free.

So not only does it give you memory loss and destroy your pleasure and motivation--it also doesn't keep you from getting hooked on opiates about half the time. Which actually makes sense, because opiates don't only work on the pleasure center of the brain, they also act on the pain receptors in the body, an entirely different mechanism. Almost as though addiction was a complex behavioral and emotional issue, not just a matter of "feeling good."

It might be hell, but it might be great. Everything would be new again. It would be a fascinating case study for researchers. How would being born with a mature adult body affect mental development and learning? Would walking come more easily because the muscles in the body were pre-trained? Would his interests be the same?

Think so? I'm no expert, but I'd hope that a fully developed adult brain would be able to learn these tasks a lot quicker than an underdeveloped brain of a child. Not sure though, but it is a good point to consider...
