Sometimes, rights conflict. If you wonder why in the world this isn't obviously a violation of the first amendment and restricting a religious person's rights, then just consider for a moment...

"Oh, serving blacks? That's against my religion, carpetbagger!"

....Also, seriously, awesome picture to go with this.

Um...why should he be required to perform functions for people he doesn't want to do them for?

Should black churches be forced to marry white racists now as well? People need to relax. Not everyone has to agree with you. And you will not die because this guy won't marry you together.

I like the winning about the wedding vendors exemptions thing. He basically wants to function as a commercial business in terms of the tours but use religion in one specific instance to cover his ass. If a church wants to limit who is in their congregation and can use church services that is fine.

/actually this guy could likely remain in business by signing some kind of contract where he rents the trolleys just to one church and you go through that church to get access to it
//just pick a bigoted church to partner with and avoid teh gays

You can't make this stuff up

Sure, you can. Why do people say this?

Belkot, 31, forwarded Grubbs' email to Annapolis news websites and fired off a response to Grubbs that read, in part, "It is your right to run your business any way you see fit, but let's be honest here, you drive a trolley up and down a street. Not exactly God's work."

Awesome.

1) He wasn't marrying anybody. He is not a church. He is a trolley business.

2) HE isn't required to do anything. His COMPANY is required to serve the public equally. Just like a restaurant cannot refuse to serve black people, his trolley service cannot refuse to serve gay couples.

So... is he polishing a stripper pole in that picture? One of those bachelor party/booze tour deals?

The owner of Discover Annapolis Tours said he decided to walk away from $50,000 in annual revenue...

It's not a very long walk.

There is a different between a "church" and a "commercial enterprise". For one, places of business in most states already have non-discrimination laws that apply to them, but not necessarily to non-profit charities or organizations (like churches).

As someone pointed out in the comments on the article, the owner of the trolley car is in fact complaining about something that didn't change with the passage of Question 6. Maryland already had a civil rights law barring any place of business from discriminating in service based on race, gender, religion/creed, or sexuality; had he refused to allow a gay couple to rent the trolley to hold a commitment ceremony or a birthday party, he would have been cited if the couple could prove the discrimination.

Even then, do a quick search on the Baptist church (in I think Georgia?) who just recently initially refused to marry an African American couple who had been members of their congregation for a decent period of time (year-plus); the denial was at the request of a few of the church members, and when the story came out the rest of the congregation was appalled at such baseless discrimination.

Actually, this is true if he conducts a handfasting or a broom jumping. But he conducts legal weddings, perhaps sanctified by some angry sky Hebrew but certainly licensed by the state.

He took the licence. He can't dicker with the requirements when he doesn't like them.

The logic would be the same as a nursing home operator refusing to install sprinklers because the Lord will protect his house of mercy. Or because he can't swim.

Install sprinklers, dickhead.
