(Live Science)   In his rant blaming violent video games for the Newtown school shooting, it's odd that NRA head Wayne LaPierre called out games like GTA, and Mortal Kombat, but inexplicably failed mention military-themed FPS's like Black Ops, or Medal of Honor   (livescience.com) divider line 146

It's almost like GTA is about committing armed crimes while CoD is about a legitimate use of force.

Mortal Kombat? I almost never murder prostitutes to steal back my money by hitting them with ice balls projected from my hands.

*almost*

It's pretty obvious why, people. Wayne LaPierre has never played a video game in his life. Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat are the games he's read about in the newspaper as controversial.

That is it. There is no other reason. He didn't call out Call of Duty because he's never HEARD of Call of Duty.

If you shoot a man in the heat of a fully sanctioned e-war while wearing a uniform, you are an e-hero.  But you shoot a hooker to get your money back, and you are an e-criminal.  Them's the breaks people.  I don't write the e-Constitution.

Or is it because LaPierre's corporate masters, aka the gun-makers, are big fans of games like COD and MOH that more or less serve as commericals for their guns?  I love those games but there is an element of pure gun porn ot them, much more so than FPS's with made up weapons like Halo

To be fair though, that level can be skipped.

Or you can be like me and not fire a shot until absolutely necessary.

the NRA didn't make any such distinctions.  look, the pro-gun talking point here is that 'violent video games make people shoot up schools'.  not SOME video games...violent video games PERIOD.  as in all of them.  that's the talking point.  Hey, I didn't write it, this is what the NRA folks came up with as their best line of defense.  they're saying ALL video games are evil.  that includes call of duty, medal of honor and all the 'America is great/lets kill people to prove it' stuff.

La Pierre threw down the obfuscate card.  I don't think even he really believes video games are to blame for this latest massacre.  But he and the NRA had to find something to blame.  something that wasn't them.  video games are a convenient excuse.  older folks still don't like or trust 'them thar video whatis and whonowdillies', the baby boomer generation is all about shifting blame to something other than themselves and so it seemed like a good time to change the subject to video game violence.  if comic books were still big, i'm sure the NRA would blame them as well.

thing of it is, I don't believe this tactic will work.  oh it'll kick up some dust, get people distracted.  i'm not sure if the timing of this mass murder helps or hurts the NRA cause tho.  on one hand, nobody is blathering about dead kids during the holiday break.  On the other hand, I don't think the issue is going away any time soon.  people hug their kids, watch them opening presents and wonder if they're gonna survive to reach puberty before being shot by a lunatic in a random act of violence.

I guess we'll wait and see how it goes.  I don't expect much to change.  some new legislation will be proposed.  right wing will block it, left wing will get to claim they tried to do something about gun violence.  the court system will wait patiently in the background.  lobbying groups will do what they've always done.  money will change hands, and once its all over...the landscape will look almost identical to how it was before 20 some kids got shot by a nutball lunatic who went looking for a way to die.

NRA-approved Selective OutrageTM . Surprise, surprise.

Also, in COD, you can earn rewards for killing your self by dropping more than 20 feet, or blowing yourself up with a grenade while taking a bad guy with you.  So, if anything, COD players are more likely to kill themselves before innocent people.  Plus, there are no innocent people in COD.  Just bad guys and good guys.  No innocent bystanders.

Hell, even Frogger had innocent bystanders.

2012-12-27 01:25:56 PM
This whole thing assumes Wayne LaPierre's insane rant was about anything beyond trying to find things to blame massacres like Newtown on other than his prescious guns.

Centipede....now that was a game.  Creepy crawlie out of control.  You have to maintain control or its the end of everything.

Or Galaga...Space Invaders except with the sneaky diagonal attacks.  No wonder people want bigger better guns.  Those only shot straight up and down.

Asteroids...that was a gun lover's fantasy.  SHOOT EVERYTHING!!!

What if you jack a pizza guy's moped and drive up and down the sidewalk listening to new wave and blasting everyone with some kind of submachine gun?

Well, clearly that is unsanctioned violence in an e-gun free zone.  You can't be doing that and not feel the need to bring it to the real world.

Also, in Asteroids, the space ship has a very high capacity clip.  In fact, I don't recall ever running out of rounds.  Asteroids is the assault weapon of video games.

I would already be doing the moped thing if there were still new wave radio stations. Good thing we got rid of them.

I'm particularly fond of the mechromancer chick.  when you reload your gun(s), she creates a burst of shock damage.

I like how the NRA is the go-to for public discourse on this issue.

There was an armed guard at Columbine, Sizzletits.  I know you are paid to push an agenda but please, shut your piehole while the adults try to suss out a solution.

Actually, I think I failed that one several times because I kept trying to kill the main badguy.  Then realized I had to walk through the whole mission.  Don't think I fired either until necessary.  But you are right, the mission can be skipped.
