Setting aside fanboyism and pathological hatred, which ARE the best 7-inch tablets out there?

Well, good luck with all that.

And they do that in a slide show that won't advance in Chrome on my 7" Galaxy Tab 7 Plus running ICS.

Nice

Weird. I tested in Chrome and Safari on my iPad 2 and it seemed to advance alright. But they threw up 2 pop ads before I could get to it.

PM seems to be written by interns these days. And they only review 4 tablets? Get a budget.

Maybe it's because I'm running adfree?

My fiance is a big apple fangirl. For reasons never explianed she wanted the Kindel Fire HD 8.9" for Xmas instead of the Ipad.

Reading, Watching, Listening, and Gaming: With the highest resolution of the bunch, the Nook is easy on a reader's eyes but won't display third-party formats.

Internet: The Nook limits Android to the extreme. It's almost not worth using the bulky Web app or struggling to make sense of the keyboard.

Hardware: Plastic-backed and sharp-edged, the Nook looks tacky and feels easily breakable.

If that's a good enough review to get you in the top four, I'd hate to see the bottom four.

/ or maybe that article was terrible...

That's possible. I don't have an ad blocking browser installed on a tablet so I can't test it

Really wanted a Galaxy Nexus 7... but the total lack of microsd slot led me to pick up the Galaxy Tab 2 7" yesterday for $150. It beats the hell out of my old Nook Color, but only dual core CPU, and lot of fracture on models is making it annoying to root, get recovery, kernels, and ROMs, and generally figure out. On the plus side, it has IR, so I should be able to use it as a universal remote for my home entertainment system. Sound is good, but some soft keyboards suck with it and take up half the screen. (SlideIt, TouchPal, etc) Also, it's lighter than my old nook, and again, was only $150...

Anywho, story time is over kids.

Also, having just done a bunch of research to replace my Nook Color, that article sucked.

Adfree and Adaway beg to differ. Host file only, but blocks ads in Apps, browsers, and elsewhere.

Beg to differ what? I don't have an adblocking browser on my tablet and I can't test wether blocking ads is causing the slideshow to work.

Are you replying to the right post?

Perhaps I read that wrong. I thought you meant without an adblocking browser, you couldn't block ads on your tablet... to whit I mentioned the two options. Maybe you meant you can't toggle adblocking to test it? I'm still not quite sure what you meant.

2012-12-27 02:03:43 PM
As mentioned, I'm using Chrome and Safari on an iPad. These browsers have no option to block ads. Different browsers can do this, but I don't have them installed. Adfree and Adaway are not options on my tablet.

You definitely read it wrong.

The people commenting about the Playbook probably work for RIM.

I mean, if they really want the 1 star review, I'll start.

The Nexus 7 and iPad mini are similar. The iPad has a couple advantages and the Nexus has a couple advantages, but they're about neck and neck. And the iPad is at least $100 more... so the Nexus is by FAR the better value.

Got one for my son for Christmas to replace the old Kindle Fire

I got my mom a Nexus 7. She loves it, and it's a great little device. My brother showed up with an iPad 2. He has to return that one.

So, what you're saying is...

#1 use of Kindle on Xmas - browsing books
#1 use of Nexus on Xmas - checking out maps
#1 use of surface on Xmas - playing with Windows 8
#1 use of iPad on Xmas - OMG gaiz, Boobies from iPad!1

I was inches from ordering a Nexus 7, myself, but then I looked at the specs and found it doesn't have an SD card slot. What kind of idiot designs a tablet with no storage expansion capability? We got a Galaxy Tab, instead. As far as I can tell, it's a pretty nice tablet, but it's our first one, so I don't have any basis for comparison. The only complaint I have is the complete lack of parental controls. Then again, we're not the type of parents who just dump our kids in a room, alone with a tablet all day, so it's not a deal breaker.

How much space would you possibly need on a 7 inch tablet?

I tote mine around for reading, a few apps, browsing the web when I'm out and about and don't want to drain my cell battery/etc.

I suppose if I felt the need to carry around my whole library of pirated videos so I could watch it on a tiny screen places it would be inconvenient, but then again I could always just bring a usb drive..

could also have to do with the demographics of each group (i know you didn't mean to be serious)

As someone that has owned/owns 4 of the 7" tablets (Free, suck on that!) I'll rate them in my opinion. YMMV
This is based on combining three things: App stores, build and material quality (Nexus 7 fails in QC), and overall user experience.

Number 1 -  Kindle Fire HD
Number 2 - iPad Mini (7.9 inch, so kind of a cheat)
Number 3 and 4 (it's a tie) - Nexus 7 and the Nook HD

I kept 3 of these, and got rid of the Nexus 7.

So, at the risk of bringing the hate-machine in here...

Anybody have an opinion on the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2? Turns out there are x86 windows 8 tablets that aren't Surface.

I feel like 2 gigs of ram and an atom is not going to be enough power, but do I really want to run visual studio on a tablet anyway?

WHy do I need storage? my music is all digitally streamed with iTunes Match, my photos are all in my photostream, my videos are on Youtube and Vudu, and my books are on my Kindle account and I can clear them as needed or not needed.

I keep a few albums, a movie, and a few favorite books - 5-6 gigs total. Everything else is online, why do I need a ton of storage?

Yes, an SD card slot is great for things like field work where I frequently don't even have a cell signal. Yes, there are lots of places like that and tech like tablets is very handy out there.

Even if that's only 10% of the time, why should I have two methods for doing the same thing? Just give me the card slot so I don't spend 10% of my time frustrated to death.

I'm reading this thread on my Nexus 7 so I'm getting a real kick out of this...

Seriously, I bought a 16 GB version of the Nexus 7 back in September and then the 32 GB version in November (the 16 GB version is going to my parents). Both are rooted with TWRP but otherwise stock.

Easily one of my favorite devices and my poor first gen ASUS Transformer is gathering dust on my shelf. The Nexus 7 is just the right size to fit in my jacket pocket so it's great for my daily commute. The only reason I held off for so long was the lack of any video out option and the lack of a microSD slot. The reason I read for the possible lack of a microSD slot actually made sense when it pointed out the drawback of using FAT32 (default for most flash memory cards) on a device with multiuser support (as of Jelly Bean 4.2.x).

I have a Gal Tab 2 and I'm quite enamored with it. Great for reading books etc

Personally , I'd not get one without the SD card slot. I hate the thought of running out of space

You can get some off brand 7-8 inch tablets from Amazon for $80-$90 bucks. A friend of mine got one and it works ok. A little wonky on the WiFi (it comes and goes) but he wants it for reading books not cruising the web

The Gal Tab 2 like mine is going for $150 right now.

I`ll keep my data on my own storage thank you very much, now get off my lawn and stop using my WIFI.

YOU might not. However, YOU are not the only tablet user in the universe. OTHER people have different needs, and, as evidenced by plently of comments I've read, would like the option of adding storage.
