"Giant" is the short and skinny one in the center. Just saying. I guess they could all be giants. Or maybe he's 10 feet behind them.

They might be.

dickfreckle: I'm always fascinated with people who stormed that beach. I mean, sure, I've pulled off a few badass stunts in my day but...Jesus. What goes through a man's mind when he's almost assured to be killed, but does it anyway? I mean, I can ride a motorcycle on a track at 160 mph, but actually marching/wading into doom? And you would have been lucky for suffering merely a clean head shot? My balls retract with respect.

These men put us all to shame. I can't even fathom what they did. and I'm crazy to start with.

Don't recall where I first heard it, but there was a quote that I'm about to butcher horribly that sums it up pretty well.

"The world is too big to fight for, too impersonal to really grasp. Don't fight for it. Find something you can understand, a wife, a son, and fight for them."

Ordinary Average Guy: blatz514: Yet he was haunted by his memories, often drinking for days at a time with guilt over Viet Cong teenager(s) he gunned down

Ditto my late father in law, because he shot a German woman who was giving away their position, as they were pinned down in a thicket by German fire.

My late FIL was in command of a security detail guarding the new Norden bombsights at the airfied in Norwich.
Security was so high, the bomb sights were pulled everytime the bombers landed.
He recalled giving explicit orders to shoot anyone who approached the bunkers unless they were a part of the security detail.
Bombardiers were sworn to an oath of secrecy and trained apart from their flight crews.
He never liked the idea of shooting someone in the same uniform. But the crazy hillbilly Guinea woulda.
God I miss that man.

She made her choice, and I don't blame her for it. But I wouldn't cry over her corpse, either.

I'm one of the most anti-war people here, but this guy was a hero.

But only because he did what needed to be done, and didnt worry about his own welfare. He didnt seek out violence, worship guns, or try to make himself look like a badass. He doesnt seem like the type that would show off a gun collection, post rants about the necessity of guns, or donate to the NRA.

This guy was a hero precisely because he didnt do any of that douchey stuff.

"For years after he had terrible nightmares. His children remember him locking himself in his room for days on end, crying to himself that he had blood on his hands."

Ah War, beautiful war.

Vectron: Quick, someone call the Neocons. This was their favorite war.

"May we have more war propaganda, sir?"

Surprised it took eight posts before the anti-war pussy facifists showed up...perhaps the tears he cried for the German kid he gunned down gave pause...
