Quick, someone call the Neocons. This was their favorite war.

Surprised it took eight posts before the anti-war pussy facifists showed up...perhaps the tears he cried for the German kid he gunned down gave pause...

the right kind of person. not perfect, but who is? this might be the classic example of how greatness is measured - is it in physical stature and strength? the power of your wallet? your rank? your skill? or your actions and character? Pride (maybe foolhardy) in his refusal to accept help, but humility in receiving praise for his fighting. the willingness to take multiple bullets so others didn't have to. the fighting rage that could overwhelm his foes. the levity to cheer his fellows upon the eve of all their deaths, and of course his unwillingness to take any hotheaded gobberwash from stripelings in their cups

Equally, he had his own demons that never left him. In Normandy he had shot down a teenage member of the Hitler Youth - the same age as his own son - who had gone on the rampage with a gun.

What? What is "the" rampage? Who was on it? Huh?

I'm one of the most anti-war people here, but this guy was a hero.

But only because he did what needed to be done, and didnt worry about his own welfare. He didnt seek out violence, worship guns, or try to make himself look like a badass. He doesnt seem like the type that would show off a gun collection, post rants about the necessity of guns, or donate to the NRA.

This guy was a hero precisely because he didnt do any of that douchey stuff.

There's a big difference between a war of choice and a war that actually threatens your country's and your culture's existence. Or vould you rather be spreching the Deutch?

This. War is not my top choice for things to happen, but when your neighbors decide that you are going to bend to their will or they are going to fark you up, fighting is really the only option.

My late FIL was in command of a security detail guarding the new Norden bombsights at the airfied in Norwich.
Security was so high, the bomb sights were pulled everytime the bombers landed.
He recalled giving explicit orders to shoot anyone who approached the bunkers unless they were a part of the security detail.
Bombardiers were sworn to an oath of secrecy and trained apart from their flight crews.
He never liked the idea of shooting someone in the same uniform. But the crazy hillbilly Guinea woulda.
God I miss that man.

True badass there. A true hero doesn't want any glory for himself - something douchey little former Privates should remember when they try to look like a hero by standing outside a school and calling themselves a Sergeant.

/Tips a glass in his name

///Thank you, Sergeant-Major...for everything.

And in case anyone wanted to know what the rubber was for, it was to be used to cover over the barrel of their rifles so that sea water won't get in.

So in a way, they did f*ck the Germans......with their guns!

We would not be speaking German if Germany had defeated Britain. I would imagine the world would look much like it does today.

"threatens your country's and your culture's existence."

Are you for closing our borders? You should be if you want to preserve our culture. How about Europe's culture? It is illegal in many of the those countries to speak of keeping Europe for Europeans and stemming the tide of 3 world immigration. Some victory.

Vectron: "For years after he had terrible nightmares. His children remember him locking himself in his room for days on end, crying to himself that he had blood on his hands."

See, this is what disturbs me so much about Theodore Roosevelt. Most people who see war come back like this guy, with various disturbing memories full of PTSD and guilt. Roosevelt doesn't just go to war, he volunteers, loves it, and keeps loving it after the war. He is still pro-war even after he sends his 4 sons to war and they don't do very well. Makes me wonder if he wasn't exactly the sort of sociopath we really don't want in charge of the country.

FTFA said he was 6'2" so he was not short. I like how he is the only grunt of the three.
Giant does not always refer to height in these matters.
He was a true Giant among men.
