Considering what part of the world this article relates to, getting pregnant probably wasn't her decision either.

So is there a law in that country that says he can't detain these women?
If there isn't then what's the problem, Cause that would mean no crime was committed.

How about instead these poor mothers go to a local midwife instead? It's a safe, cheap alternative to hospital births. If a mid-wife is good enough for the Hipsters of America, it should be good enough for a poor Kenyan mother.

In all seriousness though...It's not like the whole pregnancy thing was a surprise for these women and one day when their water breaks they say, "Oh shiat, I must be pregnant. Time to find a hospital!" They had 8-9 months to prepare. I am sure they could've have arranged for a payment plan or something so that by the time they are ready to deliver, it's all paid for. Or they could, you know, save up for it. They live in mud huts so I know they aren't making much of a living but surely they could find a goat or sheep to sell for the cash?

"Omondi says one solution to the problem would be a national health insurance program."

A much better solution would be for folks to actually take responsibility and pay for the services that they use. Either that or dont have kids they cant afford.

Um no, they aren't. They are people who knowing full well they could not afford the cost of a hospital delivery chose to have one anyway and now can't pay for it. When you don't pay someone for services rendered, that's generally considered theft of services and that makes you a thief. That said, I don't think it's the Hospital's job to arrest and/or detain them. They should call the authorities and let them do it. That way there's chance, emphasis on chance...because after all, this is Kenya, that the women won't get beat and might even be able to leave once the initial arrest has taken place.

I thought the wow...just wow thing was fully played out a few years ago. That said, what is wrong with what the poster said? They did in fact have 9 months to figure out what the payment would be and how they would pay for it. They also could have actually taken the time to find out BEFORE getting pregnant. Kenyans are no less intelligent than us, surely most are more than capable of that limited amount of thinking ahead.

I am a HUGE advocate in personal responsibility and accountability. Don't take things that aren't yours (including services) if you have no intention of payong for them. BUT......
Charging them is fine, beating them is NOT.

Yes because the Vatican speaks for all Christian sects. You should stop blaming all of your problems on invisible sky people, it won't get you anywhere in life.

They really need to be seen by a doctor and be evaluated for sickle cell, malnutrition, hypertension, STIs, other infectious diseases, cephalopelvic disportion, etc. For some of these women, this could be the only time they see a doctor.

They have double digit IQs and many of them are totally, totally make an X here to sign your name illiterate.

Some of the families in these countries will let the mother of 3, 4, 5+ children try to deliver in a mud hut way out in the countriside hours away from allopathic medicine because they feel they can't afford the hospital fees.
