colinspooky: .blank range?     Is this the new way of typing "point blank" ?

Blank range, believe it or not, is a term that was used.......back in the 20's and 30's to reference the safe distance at which a blank could be fired safely and not injure anybody outside of that distance. Now granted we also used sharpshooters in movies to shoot out sugar glass for different scenes, and now use squibs instead, but the term was there.

Point Blank refers to any range short enough to leave powder burns on the victim today, at least in the LEO/Legal Investigation vernacular. I don't know why the term "Point Blank" was adopted, but I suspect it had a lot to do with ME reporting forms. My sister worked for an ME for awhile and I noticed the form field "Distance," and on suicides they usually just leave it blank, at least back in Denver, CO.

Just pulling shiat out of my ass on that one but I could easily see that one being adopted because of a form entry. I also know investigations, which is where the insight comes from, and enough cops that I was either on the same side or the "wrong" side during criminal cases.

It is twice the distance of blankety-blank range.

No they shot him in the back and as he lay bleeding on the ground he "accidentally" shot himself in the head. (Just because the cop used his gun to put a bullet in his head does not mean he did not accidentally do it himself, just read the report)

Zikuski says the officer was lucky because Garcia was several feet away when he fired.

I think the better explanation, by the two examples in the story, is that he is the worst shooter in the world.

"I'm 2 feet away from this officer and I'm gonna shoot her in the head"
*BANG!*
Oops, missed. Just nicked her ear.

"I will now shoot these cops behind me"
*BANG!*
"Oops, missed. Shot myself in the head"

Well, she was hot. Don't worry, she was probably earmarked for someone else anyways.

I think point blank range is an artillery term, meaning that the angle of elevation is zero. What your are shooting at is so close you would miss if you aimed up to allow for bullet drop.
Since we don't shoot artillery much, but DO use light arms including handguns a lot, the term has gathered other fictional tales of etymology, such as the ones offered above.

point blank
1571, from point (v.) + blank, the white center of a target. The notion is of standing close enough to aim (point) at the blank without allowance for curve, windage, or gravity.

What I always find most confusing about things like this is, what was he doing out committing crimes on Christmas morning?! Shouldn't he be home opening presents, going to visit Grandma, or at the very least sleeping off last night's hangover?!

Point blank is the range at which you can shoot straight at a target and hit it. Meaning close enough that the bullet won't drop. Several feet, depending on exactly how many "several" is in this situation, can be within point blank range.
