This isn't the first time this has happened to a customer. Why hasn't anyone gone down and shut that restaurant down or at least told them that they couldn't sell that soup anymore?

Then he walked into a bar... met a Rabbi and a Priest... then he stumbled out of the bar into traffic... then he was carried to a funeral...

How is that physically possible?

Its not the substance itself but your bodies reaction to it that causes the problems. A bee sting technically won't kill you either either, but you're farked if you have an anaphylactic reaction to it.

Yes, but your body reacts in known ways, consistently with everyone else. You may not react exactly like the guy next to you, but there's only a few gastric reactions a body can have. You are not a special snowflake. Your body does not react in new and unique ways.  It doesn't matter if you obsess about fast food, gluten, dairy, greasy food, or spicy food, there's just only so many reactions. No person has ever gotten an ulcer from a perfectly healthy stomach from a single meal. People just have a real problem with cause and effect.

My dad and my uncle both got told that they had diabetes (they had different doctors).

My dad's doctor told him that he would lose his eyesight because of the disease and after seeing other doctors and further tests, it turns out that they didn't have diabetes.

Some doctors are clueless.

Had five spice powder? Or more than a few Chinese, Indonesian, Korean, Nepali, Tibetan, or Bhutanese dishes? Chances are you've had Sichuan pepper corns, and never even knew.

I worked at a very popular Chinese place as a teen and one night they got busted/raided. They had skinned dogs and cats in the walk-in freezer. True story this was in California on the Coast, made me glad they were cheap and would only allow us to have white rice for free.
They tried to say they were not feeding the public the dog and cats that it was for special customers, ya right and also this fairly small town had a large problem with missing animals that stopped after they got caught, not making this shiat up!

But to respond, I've seen grown men jump in rivers, crying over a drop of the stuff I eat on a daily basis. That's not reaction-differential enough?

Reminds me of my secret habanero hot sauce recipe:

-enough fine olive oil to cover the chopped mound twice over
-citrus peel -to taste
-garlic -to taste

You're basically doing an oil infuse here. VERY low heat for a good part of the day. Don't try to seal afterwards cuz it'll blow the top off your tupperware. You'll see bubbles coming out. Just let 'em go man...

While capsaicin itself does not cause a chemical burn, it triggers an inflammatory response that can cause cell damage if it is severe enough. So if you were to chug a strong enough solution of it, you certainly could trigger an inflammatory response that was strong enough to perf your stomach. Likely? No. Possible. Sure.

Grown up here by Mexico, I've been heating hot hot peppers all of my 30 year life.
My momma always told me to cut back on them because my stomach would give out. I did not consider this.
Today I have haital hernia and must use nexium daily -Found this out after seeing a cardiologist about my heart. Had NO idea my chest could palpitate over acid reflux. I also had a strange cough in the morning particularly after drinking coffee that NO doctor could figure out the cause of.
Acid builds up in stomach so far up esophagus where tissues aren't as tough and causes your pipes to turn inside out!

The brewery down the street from me has used them in a saison. I don't have a hole in my stomach.

It's a cultural thing. Hot Pot is a very traditional food in Szechuan/Chonqing.

More than one customer of McDonald's/Krispy Kreme has died from diabetes and arteriosclerosis. Why haven't they been shut down yet?

The heat in Sichuan food is largely from various chili peppers, not from the Sichuan peppercorns.
