You have to be kidding. But listening to that I had the notion that if you added distorted electric guitar at the right part of that song while keeping all the rest of that arrangement intact, You could plug Neil Young in for the vocals.

That was a gorgeous and moving performance. Also, if F1 tracks had curves like Beth Hart all the drivers would be dead.

I really liked the Stairway performance, but it did hurt my ears every time they skipped a part for time constraints. Ann Wilson delivered the goods, and I swear I saw Yo Yo Ma grooving in the audience twice.

While I have some issues with Zep stealing a lot of their music from the Blues world, no other song defines the 70s like Stairway to Heaven.

And yeah, that did look like Yo Yo Ma getting into it.

Who was that that did? He almost looked like Joe Bonamassa but his Page-aping sloppiness isn't in Joe's bag of tricks. Whomever he was, he nailed the feel, tone, and swagger.

I don't know who that was. But he did do a fantastic job with it.

Saw it on TV last night, loved it. It was like hearing it for the first time again. That choir added another layer of epicness on top of epicness. Plant tearing up and Bonham acknowledging his dad at the end made it even more special.

She was awesome, but Stairway was truly the show capper, and doing it with the Gospel chorus was inspired genius. I've never heard of Beth Hart, but I definitely an a fan, That chick brought that voice up from the freaking ground, through that long body, worked it into the lungs, and then let it go in an amazing wail. I still liked the cover of Stairway, but her performance is definitely second, and only by the slimmest of margins.

Wonderful.

In 30 years, will they be doing this for Coldplay? The Strokes? Rihanna? I somehow doubt it.

Jimmy Page looked like he really enjoyed it.

2012-12-27 10:23:48 PM
As a guitarist, I can only imagine how nerve-wracking it would be to play that solo in front of Jimmy Page.

2012-12-27 10:26:16 PM
I like Jimmy Page because he always looks like he's having a great time.

The performance invites comparisons to filmed versions of LZ performing the song in the 70s. Heart and the choir can't come close.

I hate when they throw in a superfluous gospel choir to give tv viewers something to look at.

Who was sitting on the other side of Robert Plant from Jimmy Page? I saw David Letterman on Jimmy's left, but who's the guy on Plant's right?

I found out. John Paul Jones.

I screwed up. I was thinking he was dead. I think I was thinking of the keyboardist and bass player from Pink Floyd and was confusing them in my head.
Ugh.

Do not get me wrong, I am a HUGE Zep fan. Followed Page/Plant from city to city when they toured. Met John Paul Jones during his Zooma tour. Met Jason Bonham, who by the way is a very awesome guy.

But this sucked. Over produced and the editing totally ruined it for me. And don't get me started on Celebration Day. I seen it in the theater and I wanted to punch a puppy in the face afterward. There are maybe 5 good songs on it. Dazed and Confused and Stairway are just awful. I am shocked that Jimmy willingly released it.
Back to work with "Manic Nirvana" playing in the background.

loved that. the layered orchestration being revealed piece by piece with the evolving sections of the song was beautiful, and the full choir at the end was genius.

it has to be touching to an artist to see a song they wrote so long ago still living, breathing, growing, changing, inspiring other artists and giving joy and hope to countless people long after the memories of its creation have grown worn.

i find myself choked up right along with robert.

I like how the President was casually surveying the performance at about 3:40, thinking to himself, "Zeppelin, you have done well and are pleasing in my sight."

I loved this. Got a little weepy at the end, and love the arrangement. Your mileage may vary.
