SA kicks booty...that is all i have to say

2001-11-24 12:32:40 AM
Doesn't work for me.

2001-11-24 12:38:43 AM
dead link

2001-11-24 12:51:06 AM
The link isn't working because of the 'creative' people who made scripts to boost voting totals.

After a while when the voting totals got a little obscene (80k+ for Lowtax), the site crashed. It seems people created an accidental denial of service attack, something I find enormously funny.

I'm not sure if EW (a corporate shill that just praises industry stuff {aka Will and Grace is the best show on TV and only things that we say are popular are})took down the poll or if the poll server crashed, but HAHAHa.

Hot damn.

2001-11-24 12:55:25 AM
Yeah there was some mass voting for lowtax over at SA i figure i voted for him ~1000 times, GO LOWTAX

2001-11-24 12:56:25 AM
The page is still there and lowtax now has over 300,000 votes, more than 2k the nearest competitor, but it looks like all of the top ten are ballot stuffers. I'll bet that EW does kill the contest as soon as they realize it.

2001-11-24 01:06:47 AM
What the fark is up with somethingawful.com? Anyone else having conenction problems? My computer connects 1/50th of the time, compared to 1/2 on other computers. What gives?

2001-11-24 01:09:16 AM
oops

*quickly switches off the script*

sorry...

2001-11-24 01:10:07 AM
Man, I must be the only person who gets a consistantly good connection to SA. It's always just as zippy as Fark.

2001-11-24 01:15:41 AM
You know what would of really been funny,if Cliff Yablonski was in the lead.
You all know who I voted for, right?
Slayer,of course you silly,silly people.

2001-11-24 01:17:22 AM
I can't wait to see what EW does in the next few days.
They could make a statement about foul play, but that would just hit every front page online under the 'really funny' category.

The fine people at Fark and SA have also obviously messed up a pre-made article for the print edition. This is after considering that the voting script would pop out one of a short list of five or so people if the box was left blank.

The final avenue that is possible is if the votes stand, which whould be the greatest thing ever (or however long internet fads and pranks are allowed to be funny; leading to the eventual crossover: AYBABT Entertainment Weekly).

2001-11-24 01:54:31 AM
I can just see it now:

This years "Sexiest Man of the Year" award goes to *struggles to open envelope*...Cliff..Yablonski? Who the hell is that? Anybody know who Cliff Yablonski is? Hmm...let's move on. The winner of the oscar for best actor of the year goes to...the goatse_cx guy? What the hell?

2001-11-24 01:54:55 AM
For those of you who were having trouble getting the page, here are the totals so far. Nowhere on the list are any of their pieces of shiat suggested people to vote for - 'n stink, madonna, alicia keyes, britney "cum dumpster" spears, julia roberts, nicole "my ex is gay" kidman - well, your typical "if we put enough money behind these people, we can make them famous, even if they do have less talent than a monkey on crack." i am also noticing a definate geek influence. nicely done everyone. nicely done.
1. Rich "Lowtax" Kyanka (366244 votes)
2. Steve Gibson (146832 votes)
3. David Ratana (45385 votes)
4. Maarten Goldstein (34164 votes)
5. Frank Stevens (21586 votes)
6. Wil Wheaton (19453 votes)
7. dognose (19200 votes)
8. Zack "Geist Editor" Parsons (17400 votes)
9. Mos (13175 votes)
10. Chas 'n' Dave (13159 votes)

2001-11-24 02:26:25 AM
Lowtax rules and actually deserves that title, I can't think of anyone else that has as much... funney....

And Fat Bob, you made me laugh. Only after you mentioned goatse_cx though. What the hell?

2001-11-24 02:27:38 AM
Let Lowtax take first...

But I for one want to make damned sure Wil Wheaton stays somewhere in the top 10.

2001-11-24 02:38:49 AM
I managed to vote for Cliff about 100 times before the link died. Wonder how many he got.

"10. Chas 'n' Dave (13159 votes)"

W00h00! Ch4z N D4v3 R00lz!

2001-11-24 02:41:15 AM
Just when I think Fark can't cling onto Lowtax's highly undeserving nuts any more, there you go.

2001-11-24 03:41:41 AM
So why again exactly are we leting Lowtax win instead of Wil?

2001-11-24 03:42:26 AM
Haha, Zack made it on there too.

'Cept I don't like Zack as much as Lowtax....

2001-11-24 03:45:36 AM
No really, I mean we said we were gonna do it. Don't mess with fark blah, blah, blah and now we quit cause we got passed? Oh well.

2001-11-24 04:15:06 AM
I thought we were going to be smart about this? I guess you farkS are too concerned with screwing it for every one involved... you can name your Mom the EOTR, but it aint gonna happen no matter how many votes they get.... not real entertainer.. YOUR REMOVED!

I guess I will have to stop worring about this so much... like anyone cares or holds any truth to a web poll anyway

2001-11-24 04:16:40 AM
now if anyone deserves to be there more than... say Wheaton or Walken. it should be DREW..

NOT "lowtax" or "fb-" or anyone else..

2001-11-24 04:22:00 AM
Oh yeah, you can't get much more "entertaining" than sifting through submitted links and talking about beer and boobies on your site that contains basically zero original content. Sorry, this is a great site, but I can't see how anyone can classify what Drew does as "entertaining".

AND, the results page now pops up an autovoter that votes for Lowtax. OWNED.

2001-11-24 04:35:19 AM
you are here and reading.. it must enetertain you somehow?

2001-11-24 04:43:25 AM
The site entertains me, Drew doesn't. All of the content here is submitted by the readers (the great majority at the very least). All Drew essentially does is sift through it. That doesn't make him entertaining - absolutely anyone could do that.

2001-11-24 04:46:31 AM
I love you both so much! It hurts when you fight!

Seriously though, Fark is better than Something Awful in many ways, but SA has his advantages too which is usually conceded. (How else am I going to know that Shrek is the NY Jets official mascot?)

2001-11-24 05:06:59 AM
A sidenote:

Last night around midnight, when the totals were somewhat more reasonable, I wrote a little script and put my own name in it. I got up to sixth with ~1800 votes. But, 15-20 minutes later, poof, gone, even though the "real" names below me hadn't gained anything. So, someone or something at ew.com was obviously throwing stuff out. I guess that means everything that's left up there has ew's approval.

2001-11-24 06:15:14 AM
Humigiguide I was watching it a bit... and what I noticed is that when I changed the script to instead vote for Nicole Kidman, her vote count went up and did not change. But when I put it in for Wil Wheaton his number increased, but then slid back a litle bit.

What I think they are doing is that they have a system that reduces the votes of "non-prefered" celebrities, just constantly winnowing away at their votes to keep prefered names in the lead. But with the scripts running like they are their 'subtle' vote manipulation cannot keep up.

2001-11-24 08:14:42 AM
Lowtax deserves it, anyone who doesn't like SA should be shot.

2001-11-24 09:00:49 AM
Ahh, very clever, that popover! Of course, "liberating" the HTML, altering it to vote for Wil, and setting it to run on my own machine will help ensure that Wil stays up near the top. I doubt I can be of much help in gaining the #1 spot, since Lowtax's minions have gone to such lengths, but a nice top 3 showing should be possible...

2001-11-24 09:25:20 AM
Here are the results:

Entertainer of the Year 2001

You answered: Wil Wheaton

The top vote-getters:
1. Rich "Lowtax" Kyanka (479204 votes)
2. Steve Gibson (151748 votes)
3. David Ratana (45385 votes)
4. Zack "Geist Editor" Parsons (38870 votes)
5. Maarten Goldstein (34731 votes)
6. Mos (28615 votes)
7. Wil Wheaton (27193 votes)
8. Frank Stevens (21586 votes)
9. dognose (19444 votes)
10. Chas 'n' Dave (15595 votes)

... as of just now, in case you can't get the page to load. Wil has gone up 4000+ votes in the last 20 minutes. Sweet...

2001-11-24 09:35:59 AM
From the times of your posts, that means Lowtax got over 100,000 votes in about seven and a half hours. I'm beginning to question the integrity of this poll.

2001-11-24 09:46:38 AM
If farkers would have gotten together and voted for the same person (no matter who it is), EW might have run it anyway, mentioned Fark.com, and gotten Drew some publicity.

Seems now they'll either trash the whole thing or go down the list and note only "true" entertainers.

We had an opportunity and blew it.

He- He- He said "blew"

2001-11-24 09:50:17 AM
I like Lowtax's stuff. I certainly believe that he deserves this more than any of the people they named in an attempt to skew the results. However, I sure wish that there was a way to keep any scrip kiddie with a little tim on his hands from horking up something like this.

2001-11-24 10:23:12 AM
"...keep any scrip kiddie with a little tim on his ..."

Rebbic, that's what happens when you aren't willing to pay for experienced coders, and hire the cheap ones that don't know what the hell they are doing.

2001-11-24 10:28:23 AM
Rebbic:"However, I sure wish that there was a way to keep any scrip kiddie with a little tim on his hands from horking up something like this."

Actually there are several easy ways to do this. But I guess they just feel it's easier to let the poll run, and then change the numbers to whatever they want them to be.

2001-11-24 10:35:02 AM
I think you people are missing the point....sure they might not deserve EOTY, but the point here is messing with a stupid site like EW and farking up their poll.....get with it people....that's what's funny about this...

2001-11-24 10:50:59 AM
SomeCallMeTim

how would you propose to secure the poll?

check referring URLS?

assign tempID's from one page and check your database upon submission of the page?

any other ideas?

2001-11-24 11:01:16 AM
Dewsdad - How exactly did we farkers blow it? Do you think we all voted for Lowtax, or Steve Gibson? Those two, along with Wil, are the only three of the top 10 I've even heard of. Obviously, other sites, with other agendas, are doing the same thing. We didn't blow this, we just don't have as many script kiddies.

We wanted to make a "statement" by voting Wil to #1. Obviously, other, more resourceful people had their own statements to make. However, I think the complete sweep by geek icons is a statement in and of itself. (ok, yeah, the statement is something along the lines of we all need lives, but it's a statement nonetheless.)

2001-11-24 11:21:47 AM
The poll now gives errors:

And I can't wait to see if they actually publish it in the year end double issue... I'm pretty sure they won't, even though they said they would. It feels pretty nice to fark up some corporate bastard entertainment magazine's plans to nominate Julia Roberts and Harry Potter for entertainer of the year.

2001-11-24 12:10:32 PM
The top vote-getters:
1. Rich "Lowtax" Kyanka (506223 votes)
2. Steve Gibson (151872 votes)
3. Zack "Geist Editor" Parsons (49578 votes)
4. Wil Wheaton (47880 votes)
5. David Ratana (45385 votes)
6. Mos (38493 votes)
7. Maarten Goldstein (34732 votes)
8. Frank Stevens (21586 votes)
9. Chas 'n' Dave (20180 votes)
10. dognose (19444 votes)

Am I the only one scripting for Wil? Coz if I've gotten him 20,000 votes in the last ~3 hours, I'm impressed. Running 2 instances each of the script on 3 different machines. FARK the VOTE!

Mos

Vote for Mos or I'll punch you in the face.

BigPhilly: Where can I get a copy of that script? I'd like to use it once the site starts working again.

2001-11-24 02:24:29 PM
VanRoosta: check your email...

2001-11-24 02:26:02 PM
If everyone has a copy of the script I know we have more Farkers than SA has Awfulers (or something). Lowtax is cool but it's still not an excuse not to do what we set out to.
