I live in Lakota, just a short distance from Mankato. I was in town this morning and saw the last few minutes of the ceremony. It was very touching. They weren't dwelling on the shiatty thing that happened, they were focused on making amends and moving forward. That's not exactly a common theme these days.

If you get a chance there's a good doc called "500 Nations" which fairly quickly (4.5 hrs) goes through the entire native American history and genocide region by region. About two hours in it gets kind of rough to handle all the inhumanity, but if you push through it's worth it for the historical scope.
Here's part one on youtube:

Fark Rye For Many Whores: I've never understood that word - I don't understand any of those injun languages. "Lakota," is that like French for "the tampon"?

"Sioux" is actually a dirty word, although I'm not sure in which language--it's a French bastardization of a Native word for "pig" or "swine" from what I recall. There are several tribal names, of which "Lakota" or "Dakota" were the most numerous, but there are many other Plains tribes who were subsumed under the pejorative term "Sioux".

Does that answer your somewhat lame question?

namatad: execution?wouldnt mass murder be slightly more accurate ?

In early December, 303 Sioux prisoners were convicted of murder and rape by military tribunals and sentenced to death. Some trials lasted less than 5 minutes. No one explained the proceedings to the defendants, nor were the Sioux represented by a defense in court

YUP
mass murder

Gosh, so how did they get from 303 sentenced to death to 38 hangings? It's almost like there was some sort of institutional check that prevented it from being actual mass-murder. Oh... wait. How about you tell me a little bit about the institutional checks that prevented atrocities on the other side? Oh wait, the whole war started because a group of young men decided on their own to murder a farm family for no good reason... and present it to their leaders as a fait accompli.

So, would it be safe to say that the 38 Men who died were well hung?

olddinosaur: Nice to hear we are finally atoning for the massacre of 38 Indians.

Now, I would like to see someone come forward and prosecute the bastards who murdered 78 people at Waco Texas on April 19, 1993, and then arrested all whom they did not kill outright, placed them on trial on phony charges, and after they were acquitted of all but the moist trivial offenses, bribed a crooked judge to send them up for 40 years anyway, on an offence which should have rated 3 days, tops.

Persecution is not always a matter of race, and terrorism is legal in the USSA, as long as you wear the right uniform and work for the gummint.

Enjoy it while you can, bastards, free men are coming to kill you.

38 people.
Out of three hundred.
Because you spared the rest.
From a group you were at war with.
At a time when every other country worth a damn slaughtered folks by the thousands.

No wonder the Euros laugh at you all.

Never mind the war that was going on at the time. 3,600 dead in one day at Antietam that September, with 17,000 wounded.

As a brown skinned southerner I have only asked if i was puerto rican or mexican in the north and california, never in New Orleans...

To be fair, in the South they probably just think they're the same place.

And to be fair, your profile says you live in Portland, which is whiter than white, like Madison Wisconsin, they have have heard talk of us brown people, had two in their graduating class, but love to judge...

Minorities often have problems in every culture. Fortunately, the U.S. is far better at accommodating multiple cultures and backgrounds than Europe or most other nations.

plutonium238: /You are slowly becoming the minority. One interracial baby at a time.

White people are already a minority at about 25% of the world's population. Relax, lol. Your racism is like a glaring neon sign.
