I guess my wife's whole family is awful for having a "Sock Hop" party, complete with Candy Cigarette's, for her dads "19th" birthday. (born on Feb 29th), with all the grandkids.  They will all start smoking now!!!

"I just got through a bag of gummy bears," one person wrote. " Now I can't stop thinking about where to find a REAL bear to eat!"

Lulz.

Is it "soda" or "pop" in Minnesota?

Man, I miss gum cigarettes and Big League Chew.  I have stupidly fond memories tied directly to both of them.

Well, no one's gonna buy a beverage like that!

St Paul had a lot less winging and tossing when the Gambinos were in charge.

An e-cigarette battery is at least the size of a 2.5 inch long Tootsie Roll.

Cigarettes are bad; and so are candy cigarettes. And you should feel bad for liking either! Think of teh childrens!

So, it's the packaging that's offensive?

R J Reynolds should start selling cigarettes in tins (like Altoids). We can have cigars individually wrapped like candy bars. Or just redo cigarette boxes like those of Nerds (all colorful and with a single exit point).

I had Big League Chew, plus those candy cigarettes. And, of course, because I had both of those candies, I now chaw and smoke 3 packs a day. I should be dying of lung cancer any day now.

NOT

I also had both as a kid. But I do smoke and chew. I'm sure that my family being a bunch of addicts had nothing to do with it. It's not like every single one of my relatives smoked, chewed, or both (except for my dad strangely enough). Nor the long line of alcoholics and drug abusers. It couldn't be any of that nope all the candies fault.

For a brief while in the '90s they did as a special deal.

I love (read that as hate) how the State official felt he had to state that this wasn't taking time away from other law enforcement work.

I don't agree with a $500 fine when a warning and explanation of the law would have sufficed. But when people start making statements sort of apologizing for doing their job, that's when I have a WTF moment.

Selling candy cigarettes at a soda shop? I'm sorry but that just won't float.

I live near that place so I'm getting a kick out of these replies

Pixie sticks should be banned too. A powdery substance with a straw? That's just trouble waiting to happen.

A warning and explanation of the law is exactly what happened. The fine and misdemeanor would be next if the candy cigarettes continued to be sold.

blame it on the pussy husbands of that area. it is big mouth harpy coont helicopter moms that whine about this shiat to begin with that snowball into farking ridiculous laws and fines. if they had able bodied husbands that showed them the back of a hand once in a while these coonts would learn stupid ideas and going beyond asking "what would you like to eat" will result in a motion that would make her flinch in fear. this is why French men laugh at Americans. yes, yes they do. they've been around thousands of years and they're laughing at you, your constitution and the firearms you keep locked in the closet, you pussies.

Makes me wonder why all the Smirnoff Ice-like beverages are legal--- real alcohol pretending to be soda. Seems worse than fakes pretending to be real.

Wait wait wait! Someone actually got funds to research the national use, on a county by county basis, of the terms "pop", "soda" and "coke"? Was this, by chance, a government research grant?

"Somebody from Bloomington called and reported us," Lynden said.

There's your problem. If they'd just have drawn the line at Edina, or even Richfield, they wouldn't have to worry about the whiny little narcs from Bloomington. Next thing, those self-entitled rich snobs from Burnsvillle are going to be all up in the candy shop owners' grills about pix-e-stix and rock candy preparing kids for a life of sniffing coke and smoking crystal meth.

/just joking
//grew up there. Those whiny little narcs went to HS with me.

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: Wait wait wait! Someone actually got funds to research the national use, on a county by county basis, of the terms "pop", "soda" and "coke"? Was this, by chance, a government research grant?

There are 3,141 counties (or "county equivalents") in the US and that map says they had ~120,000 respondents so that's an average of 40 respondents per county.

Now realizing that you probably need a sample proportionate to population density some of the less populous areas they might have only had 1 or 2 people who decided what they call it there.

And 120K is only about 3% of the US so I think the government probably should do this over to get a better picture. And what "other" things was it called? "Soft drinks?" "Pepsi-coke?" "fizz-juice?" "high-fructose carbonated corn syrups?" This is important!

There was once candy dots in a plastic hypodermic needle.

Which lead to upsurge in heroin use among children or made the trip to the doctor less scary.

Wow, between this and the article of the mass hanging in Mankato, we could have a Minnesota trifecta in play. BTW, it's "pop" in the Land of 10,000 Busybodies. "Soda" is for you weirdos on the west coast...

I couldve sworn these were made illegal in CA in the 90s when I was a kid, since I see them so rarely now, but a quick search of the interwebs says I am wrong. Huh.

2012-12-27 08:47:51 AM
Tfa says these are illegal in canada (not true, according to wikipedia) and thailand (unlikely... "You can diddle our kids, but we must protect our kids from fake cigs!")

Just put a warning on them

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Sugar Causes Diabetes, Heart Disease, Weight Problems, And May Complicate Pregnancy.
SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Quitting Candy Now Greatly Reduces Serious Risks to Your Health.
SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Fatness By Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury, Premature Birth, And Never Wearing A Swimsuit Again.

Map incorrect. In both Oklahoma City (dead center of OK just about) and Southern OK, which the map indicates the generic term is "Coke," the generic term is "pop." In parts of VA & MD, where the map indicates the generic term to be soda, it is, in fact, "Coke."

Source being that I currently live in OKC, frequently visit that area of Southern OK, and grew up in those parts of VA and MD (bounced between them and the Jersey Shore, where the map correctly indicates the generic term to be "soda.")

Rtfa...all they got was a warning. The fine was mentioned as punishment for a second offense.
